A persistent household odor is best solved by finding and correcting its source—not by covering it with fragrance. First rule out an emergency: if the smell suggests natural gas, leave immediately without using switches, phones, flames, or engines in the affected area, then call emergency services from a safe location. For other odors, map where and when they occur, inspect likely sources, and address moisture or plumbing problems before considering air cleaners.
What to do first if the smell may be dangerous
A rotten-egg-like odor can indicate a natural-gas leak. Do not investigate or try to locate the leak yourself. Leave the area, avoid operating electrical switches or appliances, using a phone, starting a vehicle or engine, or creating a flame in the affected area, and call 911 from a safe place away from the suspected leak. Do not re-enter until authorities say it is safe. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s emergency guidance begins with the instruction to “Leave the area” (PHMSA: Recognizing and Responding to Pipeline Emergencies).
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a separate hazard: it has no smell. If a CO alarm activates, leave and follow emergency guidance; the absence of an odor does not rule out CO.
How to trace a non-emergency odor
Map where and when it happens
Note the strongest location, whether the odor is constant or intermittent, and the time, weather or humidity, and activities around each episode. Record whether it changes when a fan, HVAC system, appliance, drain, door, or window is used. An odor diary can help identify patterns, according to ATSDR’s guidance on environmental odors.

Compare the strongest spot with nearby rooms, openings, and airflow paths: a smell may travel from its source. Step outside briefly and return to reset your nose, which can adapt to an odor over time. EPA’s Indoor Air Quality Problem Solving Tool also recommends approaching an indoor-air problem by considering likely sources and conditions.
Check ordinary sources before using a product to mask the smell
Start with items that are straightforward to inspect: garbage and recycling, food spills, damp laundry or other textiles, pet bedding or litter, stored cleaning products, and floor drains. Check refrigerator drip pans or filters where applicable. A strong match between a source’s location or use and the odor’s timing is a useful clue, but it does not by itself identify a hazard.

Investigate sewer-like odors as a plumbing clue
A sewage or drain-like smell can point to a dry drain trap, damaged drain line, or venting problem. Note which fixtures are affected. If an infrequently used drain is involved, adding water to its trap may help determine whether the odor changes; do not attempt repairs beyond your ability. EPA retrofit guidance calls for checking that traps contain water and inspecting drains for breaks or leaks (Healthy Indoor Environment Protocols for Home Energy Upgrades). If the odor persists, affects several fixtures, or seems connected to damaged plumbing or venting, arrange an assessment by a licensed plumber.
What a musty odor can mean
A musty smell is a reason to look for dampness and possible mold, not proof by itself that mold is present. EPA states: “A moldy odor suggests that mold is growing in the building and should be investigated.” Check under sinks, around toilets and tubs, near exterior walls and windows, in basements, around ceilings and roofs, and at HVAC condensate areas for leaks, staining, condensation, dampness, or visible growth. Mold needs moisture to grow, so cleaning without fixing the water source can allow the problem to return. See EPA’s guidance on what mold smells like.

Fix moisture and handle affected materials
Repair the leak or other moisture source and dry water-damaged areas promptly. EPA recommends drying water-damaged items within 24–48 hours to help prevent mold growth; CDC mold guidance advises drying or removing wet materials within 48 hours. These are prevention windows, not a guarantee that mold will not develop.
Clean suitable hard surfaces with household products or soap and water according to label directions. Porous moldy materials that cannot be adequately cleaned and dried may need removal or replacement. Ventilate during cleanup, use appropriate gloves and eye protection, and never mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. Get qualified help for extensive, hidden, or recurring mold or moisture problems, or if occupants have health concerns.

Routine home mold testing is not a default first step: CDC/NIOSH guidance notes limitations of short-term air sampling and the absence of health-based indoor mold standards. Finding and correcting the moisture source is more actionable than relying on a test result alone.

Source correction comes first. EPA says, “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air” (Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home). Ventilate with outdoor air when it is clean and safe to do so, and use kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans that vent outdoors.

EPA recommends indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally 30–50 percent. A hygrometer can help track humidity, but it does not locate a leak, identify mold, or determine what is causing an odor. See EPA’s indoor-air improvement guidance.
A portable air cleaner with suitable filtration may help remove some particles and may help with some odors, but it will not repair a leak or resolve a mold problem caused by ongoing moisture. Avoid ozone generators, which intentionally produce ozone. Product instructions and the room’s conditions matter; filtration is a supporting measure, not source removal.
How to judge the next step
For each likely source, ask:
- Does its location and timing fit the odor pattern?
- Is there a visible clue, such as dampness, waste, a spill, or damaged plumbing?
- Will the proposed action remove or repair the source, or only cover or filter the smell?
- Could the work involve a safety hazard that calls for a qualified professional?
- Does the odor return after cleaning or an initial repair?
There is no single household odor detector established as a reliable way to identify every possible source. Smell can point to something worth investigating, but it cannot identify every contaminant or measure exposure. EPA’s odor guidance cautions that odor is not a dependable test of indoor-air quality (A View Indoors: If it smells good and fresh, is it good for my indoor air and me?). A pleasant smell does not prove the air is safe, and an unpleasant smell alone does not prove a toxic exposure.
When to seek health advice
Do not diagnose illness from an odor. If symptoms recur at home and improve when you are away, consider whether an indoor source could be involved and discuss the symptoms with a healthcare professional or local health department. An odor can accompany irritation or headache, but perceived smell is not a direct measure of exposure or toxicity; EPA’s indoor-air guide explains the limits of using odor to assess air quality.
