To use Siri with a smart-home accessory, first add it to the Home app on an iPhone or iPad, give it a distinctive name, and assign it to a room. Then ask Siri to control it by name, room, scene, or status. A HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV set up as a home hub is needed for remote control and automations.
Set up an accessory in Apple Home
- Prepare the accessory. Turn it on and keep it nearby. Check that it is compatible with Apple Home: look for the Works with Apple Home or Matter indication on the product or packaging.
- Open the Home app on an iPhone or iPad. Tap Add, then Add Accessory. Accessories cannot be added to Home on a Mac.
- Pair it. Scan the accessory’s setup code, or hold your device near the accessory if that option is offered. If a Matter accessory is already paired elsewhere, choose More Options. Allow network access if prompted.
- Choose a room and name. Use a short, distinctive name that is easy to say, and avoid giving multiple accessories the same name. The room assignment lets you control devices by location.
- Finish setup. Follow the remaining on-screen steps and check that the accessory appears in the correct room in Home.
Apple’s accessory setup guide recommends assigning an accessory to a room and naming it so it is easier to identify and control. Samsung TVs that support AirPlay are not necessarily HomeKit accessories; AirPlay compatibility alone does not allow a TV to be added to Home.
What to say to Siri
Siri uses the accessory names, rooms, zones, scenes, and status stored in Home. Speak naturally, but include a room or device name when the request could refer to more than one thing.
| What you want to do | Example request |
|---|---|
| Control a device | “Turn on the lights.” “Turn off the fan.” “Lock the front door.” |
| Control a particular room or area | “Turn off the lights downstairs.” “Turn on the fan in the office.” “Adjust the brightness downstairs to 50%.” |
| Set a value or color | “Set the temperature to 20 degrees.” “Make the lights blue in the bedroom.” |
| Ask about device status | “Are the lights on downstairs?” “Did I close the garage door?” |
| Run a scene | “Siri, set my reading scene.” “Siri, good night.” |
| Use a home-related request | “Hey Siri, I’m home.” “Start heating the upstairs.” |
Exact controls depend on the accessory. A light may support brightness or color requests, for example, while a lock responds to locking commands. If Siri selects the wrong device, check its name and room in Home, then make the spoken request more specific.

Do you need a HomePod or Apple TV?
No home hub is needed just to add accessories or issue Siri commands from a nearby Apple device. A home hub is needed for control while you are away, sharing control, and automations. Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs during setup; Apple TV becomes a hub when assigned to a room. Check that the hub is online if those features are not working.
Thread-based Matter accessories have an additional requirement: a Thread-enabled hub or supported Thread border router. Matter compatibility by itself does not mean that every accessory can connect through every home hub, so check the device’s Thread requirements before choosing it.

Use scenes and automations
Scenes: one spoken command, several actions
A scene sets multiple accessories to chosen states together. For example, a “Good Night” scene could turn off lights and lock the front door. Create and name the scene in Home, then ask Siri to activate it by name.
Automations: actions triggered by an event
Automations can run based on time, location, people arriving or leaving, sensor detection, or another accessory being turned on, turned off, opened, or otherwise triggered. Configure the conditions and actions in Home. A home hub is required for automations.

- Remote Control: To enable HomeKit remote control, you need a HomePod, an Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, or an iPad. Set any of these Apple devices in your house as a HomeKit bridge and connect it to your home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Keep in mind that once your HomeKit bridge is set up, it has to be kept online. - Compatibility: Confirm the specific model works with Apple Home or Matter. A wireless or voice-assistant feature on its own does not establish Home compatibility.
- Connection type: Find out whether it uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread. For a Thread-based Matter device, verify that you have a compatible Thread-enabled hub or border router.
- Hub-dependent features: Check whether the feature you want—such as remote access or an automation—requires a home hub.
- Supported controls: Verify that the device supports the functions you plan to request, such as dimming, color changes, or temperature adjustments.
- Room and routine fit: Consider whether the accessory can be placed in a useful room and included in the scenes or automations you want.
Fix common Siri and Home problems
- Siri cannot find or control the accessory: Make sure it has power and is nearby during setup, confirm that it is compatible, and check its name and room in Home.
- You cannot add it: Use an iPhone or iPad, not a Mac. Retry pairing with the setup code or nearby-device option, and allow network access if requested.
- Remote control or automations fail: Confirm that a home hub is active, online, and assigned or set up correctly.
- A Thread Matter accessory will not connect: Check that a Thread-enabled hub or supported Thread border router is available.
- The hub is not responding: Check Wi-Fi, iCloud Keychain, and two-factor authentication; update and restart the hub, then check its connection again.
