There is no documented in-house testing for this comparison, so it would be misleading to call these products “tested by our experts.” Instead, this guide compares four candidates covered by Sleep Foundation and Tom’s Guide in their 2026 guides, with each finding attributed to its publisher. Coop Sleep Goods Ultra Tech is a strong fitted-protector candidate based on Tom’s Guide’s waterproofing review; Saatva is Sleep Foundation’s waterproof-roundup pick; Layla is the option for full-mattress enclosure; and Brooklyn Bedding needs a waterproof-claim check because the two publishers characterize it differently.
Before ordering, match the protector’s construction to the coverage you need and check the exact model’s waterproof claim, mattress-depth limit, care instructions, and current return and warranty terms with the manufacturer. Those details can vary by product and change over time.
How these four protectors compare
The products below were selected by outside publications, not tested side by side by this site. Their prices and policies are source-reported snapshots, not guaranteed current offers.
| Protector | Coverage and fit | What the publisher reports | Reported price and policies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coop Sleep Goods Ultra Tech Waterproof Mattress Protector | Fitted protector; Tom’s Guide reports a maximum mattress depth of 18 inches and six sizes. | Tom’s Guide named it best overall in its 2026 guide, gave it 5/5 for waterproofing, and described it as soft, breathable, and noiseless. Its tester also found the surface slippery. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide | Tom’s Guide listed $46–$69 at publication, a 100-night trial, and a one-year warranty. |
| Saatva Waterproof Mattress Protector | Fitted protector; Sleep Foundation reports a fit for mattresses up to 16 inches. | Sleep Foundation named it best overall in its 2026 waterproof-specific list. It describes organic cotton with a ventilated polyurethane moisture barrier and machine-washable care. Sleep Foundation’s waterproof-protector guide | Sleep Foundation listed $145, a 45-day return period, and a one-year warranty. |
| Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector | Fitted protector; Sleep Foundation reports six sizes and fit up to 14 inches. | Sleep Foundation named it its most comfortable waterproof pick, describing polyester, TitanCool fabric, and a polyurethane membrane. Tom’s Guide separately recommends it for hot sleepers and notes a slippery feel for restless sleepers, but describes its water protection as “water resistant,” not waterproof. Confirm the exact model’s claim before treating it as a waterproof option. Sleep Foundation’s waterproof-protector guide; Tom’s Guide’s 2026 guide | Sleep Foundation listed $99. Tom’s Guide reports a three-year warranty and 30-day returns; verify current terms with the brand. |
| Layla Full Encasement Mattress Protector | Zippered, six-sided enclosure; Sleep Foundation reports a maximum mattress depth of 14 inches and six sizes. | Sleep Foundation reports a waterproof test result of up to 38 pounds per square inch. The enclosure covers the mattress’s top, sides, and bottom, unlike a fitted protector. Sleep Foundation’s waterproof-protector guide | Sleep Foundation listed a 30-night trial and one-year warranty; a price was not stated in that guide. |
For Brooklyn Bedding, the disagreement between publishers is material: one includes the product in a waterproof-specific list while the other calls it water resistant. Do not assume those descriptions are interchangeable; confirm the current product’s stated liquid protection with the manufacturer.

Which style and surface suit your needs?
For a fitted protector with a reported waterproofing score
Coop Sleep Goods Ultra Tech is the most straightforward candidate in this group if you want a fitted style and value a publisher-reported waterproofing assessment. Tom’s Guide’s 5/5 score and comfort descriptions are that publication’s review findings, not a guarantee for every mattress, spill, or use condition. Its note that the surface felt slippery may matter if you move around at night or use sheets that shift easily.
For cotton over a moisture barrier
Saatva pairs an organic-cotton surface with a ventilated polyurethane barrier, according to Sleep Foundation. That construction may appeal if you prefer a cotton feel, but “ventilated” does not establish that every sleeper will stay cool. Sleep Foundation reports machine washing; consult Saatva’s current label for the correct wash and dry settings.

For an enclosure rather than a fitted sheet
Layla’s zippered enclosure wraps all six sides of the mattress. It is the distinct choice here when underside coverage is important. A fitted protector shields the sleeping surface and sides but leaves the bottom uncovered. Check the mattress depth before buying: Sleep Foundation reports Layla fits up to 14 inches.
For a cooling-oriented option, with a qualification
Sleep Foundation describes Brooklyn Bedding’s protector as having TitanCool fabric and a polyurethane membrane, while Tom’s Guide recommends it for hot sleepers and reports a slippery feel for restless sleepers. These are publisher descriptions, not a cooling guarantee. More importantly, because Tom’s Guide calls it water resistant rather than waterproof, confirm the precise model and the level of liquid protection before choosing it for spills or accidents.

Measure your mattress before choosing a size
A protector that is too shallow may not stay in place; an overly loose fit can bunch. Measure the mattress from its bottom edge to its top sleeping surface, including any topper you plan to leave in place. Then compare that measurement with the manufacturer’s current pocket-depth limit. The cited guides report these maximum depths:
- Coop Sleep Goods Ultra Tech: up to 18 inches, according to Tom’s Guide.
- Saatva Waterproof Mattress Protector: up to 16 inches, according to Sleep Foundation.
- Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling: up to 14 inches, according to Sleep Foundation.
- Layla Full Encasement: up to 14 inches, according to Sleep Foundation.
These are publisher-reported specifications, not a substitute for checking the current product listing. Coop’s guide reports six sizes; Sleep Foundation reports six sizes for Brooklyn Bedding and Layla. Confirm that your preferred size is available and that any topper is included in the fit calculation.

Waterproof does not tell you how it feels or how it performs in every spill
“Waterproof,” “water resistant,” and “breathable” describe different things. A waterproof membrane is intended to block liquid from reaching the mattress; water-resistant wording does not establish the same level of protection. Breathability, softness, noise, and cooling concern comfort, not proof of liquid protection. The cited publications use different products and methods, so their observations are not a standardized head-to-head ranking.
Layla’s reported result of up to 38 pounds per square inch is specifically Sleep Foundation’s test result, not a universal measure of household-spill performance. For any model, look for the exact current product’s stated barrier construction and coverage, then follow its care label: damage or wear to a membrane can undermine protection.

Care, returns, and warranties
Published details are useful starting points, but confirm all terms with the manufacturer before purchase. The sources cited here do not provide complete, current wash-and-dry settings for each of the four models, so use the label supplied with the exact product rather than guessing. High heat may harm waterproof membranes; do not assume a protector can be tumble-dried unless its instructions say so.
- Coop: Tom’s Guide reports a 100-night trial and one-year warranty.
- Saatva: Sleep Foundation reports a 45-day return period and one-year warranty.
- Brooklyn Bedding: Tom’s Guide reports 30-day returns and a three-year warranty; Sleep Foundation’s waterproof-specific guide lists $99 but does not establish those policies.
- Layla: Sleep Foundation reports a 30-night trial and one-year warranty.
A trial or return window is not necessarily the same as a warranty. Check whether returns require specific packaging or condition, whether fees apply, and what defects the warranty covers.
