How to tell what is causing the streaks
The timing and shape of the marks can point to a likely cause, though they are clues rather than a definitive test.

Why cleaning conditions and technique matter
Sun and rapid drying
When direct sunlight dries cleaning products on the pane before you remove them, residue can remain as visible streaks. Andersen recommends cleaning its windows and doors on a cloudy day for best results and warns that direct sun can dry products on the glass and cause streaks. Choose a shaded or cloudy time when practical.
Too much detergent
More cleaning solution does not necessarily mean cleaner glass. Kärcher warns that excess cleaning agent can leave a greasy film. Follow the cleaner maker’s recommended dilution and use only the amount needed for the job.

A dirty or worn squeegee edge
Grit caught on the rubber, an uneven edge, or a worn lip can leave lines on successive passes. Keep the edge clean and inspect it for damage; replace it if it is no longer even. Dry water left around the pane’s edges with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Dirt carried by runoff
Not every vertical mark comes from poor squeegee technique. Pilkington explains that, on glass without its Activ coating, water can run down in rivulets and deposit dirt in streaks. If marks trace drainage paths, remove the soil before the final water-removal step rather than assuming the cleaner itself is to blame.

A careful method for an ordinary exterior-window clean
- Check the glass first. Identify the window maker and glass type if possible, then read the product’s care instructions. This is especially important for coated or specialty glass.
- Work in shade when practical. A cloudy day or shaded pane gives you more opportunity to remove the solution before it dries.
- Lift loose soil gently. Use a soft, dry cloth, then loosen remaining dirt with a mild, compatible solution and soft applicator. Avoid trapping grit against the glass.
- Use the directed amount of cleaner. Do not add extra detergent in an attempt to improve the result; excess can leave a film.
- Remove the solution with a clean squeegee. Make controlled, continuous passes with an intact edge, then dry residual water around the edges with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Check the pattern before repeating. If streaks remain, inspect the squeegee and determine whether the marks look like residue, tool-path lines, or runoff trails. For persistent haze or deposits, consult the window maker or glass supplier before escalating.
When not to use a stronger cleaner or tool
Do not assume persistent marks need a razor, scouring pad, acid, or abrasive paste. Andersen lists abrasive tools and metal blades among items to avoid on its products, and Guardian’s guidance for architectural coated glass warns that improper cleaning can permanently damage coatings. These restrictions are product-specific: check the actual window or glass supplier’s instructions before using any aggressive method. Guardian’s cited guidance dates to 2015, so follow the supplier’s latest instructions for the installed glass.
There is no universal treatment for every deposit on every type of glass, and the appearance of a mark alone does not prove permanent etching. If ordinary cleaning does not resolve it, ask the manufacturer or supplier to identify the glass and recommend a compatible next step.

What to expect from tools and water choices
A basic squeegee and soft lint-free cloths suit the ordinary method described above. Kärcher also describes a cordless window vacuum as an optional way to remove water; the available guidance does not establish that it cleans better than a squeegee. The cited sources do not establish a general tap-water-versus-distilled-water advantage or a hard-water threshold for this problem, so changing water type is not a proven universal fix for streaks.
