The sound alone cannot identify a failed part. Start by noting when it happens, then check the load, surrounding clearance, and the machine’s stability. If the noise persists, worsens, or comes with poor operation, arrange service.
First, identify when the noise happens
Notice whether the grinding occurs only while the washer agitates, or also during spin, draining, or another part of the cycle. Some newer washers make motor-direction or gear sounds during agitation that the manufacturer describes as normal. A pump may also make noise while draining, which is different from noise during agitation. Compare what you hear with the sound descriptions in your model’s manual or manufacturer support information.
A familiar, brief motor sound with otherwise normal operation is different from a new, persistent, or worsening grinding or rubbing noise. Timing helps narrow down which checks are relevant, but it is not a remote diagnosis.
Check the load and the space around the washer
Reduce or redistribute a heavy load
If clothes are packed tightly or the load is heavy or bulky, pause the cycle if your model allows it safely, then reduce or redistribute the laundry according to the owner’s manual. Whirlpool notes that overloading can make a washer noisier, including with grinding-type sounds, and that clothes need room to move. If the sound continues with a suitable load, do not assume the load was the only cause.

Look for contact with nearby objects or a drain pan
Move loose items near the washer that could touch its cabinet during operation. If the washer sits in a drain pan, check whether the tub could be rubbing the pan, particularly with a heavy or bulky load. Whirlpool says adjusting the washer’s legs may provide clearance. Do not reach underneath or move a heavy washer on your own to investigate; follow the model’s safety and installation instructions.
Check whether the washer is stable and level
An unlevel or rocking washer can contribute to noise. Use the installation instructions for your exact model rather than relying on a generic adjustment method. Whirlpool’s guidance describes checking level in both directions, confirming that the feet contact the floor, adjusting the leveling feet, and tightening lock nuts as directed. A bubble level and adjustable wrench or pliers can help with this external setup check; they do not diagnose internal faults.

Washers are heavy. Whirlpool advises using two or more people when moving or installing one. Do not tip, lift, or move the appliance alone, and stop if an adjustment requires unsafe handling.

- Basic checks are reasonable: the noise is mild, the washer is operating normally, and you can safely correct an overloaded load, nearby object, or external leveling issue using the model’s instructions.
- Arrange service: the noise remains after those checks, becomes louder or more severe, or the washer’s operation is impaired. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific support or contact a qualified appliance technician.
- Do not order a part based on the noise alone: grinding does not establish that a clutch, bearing, gearcase, belt, or any other internal component has failed.
Whirlpool also identifies grinding or clanking when the basket or drum is moved by hand as a reason to seek professional service. Do not force or dismantle the washer to reproduce the sound.
