Let a new memory foam mattress expand according to its maker’s instructions, air out the room if the foam smell is bothersome, and then use it normally once setup directions allow. Expansion, odor fading, and adjusting to the feel are separate processes: a mattress can reach full loft well before it feels familiar.
What “breaking in” a memory foam mattress means
There is no single break-in clock. A compressed mattress needs time to expand; a new-foam odor may need time and ventilation to fade; and your body may need time to get used to the mattress’s feel. One stage finishing does not mean the others are finished.
Expansion after unboxing
For a mattress delivered compressed, follow the product’s setup directions and put it on the support surface specified by the manufacturer. Sleep Foundation says compressed mattresses may need several hours to decompress and can take up to 48 hours to reach full loft. That is broad consumer guidance, not a guarantee for every mattress model (Sleep Foundation).
Getting used to the feel
Even after the mattress has expanded, its feel may seem unfamiliar. Tempur-Pedic says its mattresses can take a few weeks to adjust to a sleeper’s body weight and temperature. This is guidance for that brand, not a universal timetable (Tempur-Pedic support).

What to do after delivery
- Check the model’s instructions. Use the setup directions, care manual, and warranty terms for your mattress. If the maker specifies an expansion period or setup requirements, follow those rather than a general rule.
- Give a compressed mattress room to expand. Place it on the specified foundation or support and allow the recommended time before judging its final shape or feel.
- Ventilate the room. Open windows when practical or use a fan to improve airflow. If the smell bothers you, airing the mattress in a separate ventilated space may help before bringing it into the bedroom.
- Use it normally when the instructions allow. Give yourself time to adapt. The sources do not establish that jumping on the mattress, rolling it, adding weight, or following a special routine speeds break-in.
- Protect the surface. A mattress protector can help keep the mattress clean and undamaged. Choose one that fits and is permitted by the maker’s care directions; it is a care measure, not a break-in aid (Sleep Foundation mattress care).
If the mattress feels too firm
First allow the mattress to finish expanding and consider whether it arrived or is being used in a cool room. Tempur-Pedic says its foam feels softer in warmer conditions and firmer when cool, and that its mattresses typically take about 30 days to soften to the preferred feel; it notes that more time can sometimes be needed. These timing and temperature points apply to Tempur-Pedic’s guidance, not necessarily to other brands (Tempur-Pedic support).
Do not assume that waiting will correct every mismatch. If the feel remains different from what you expected, check the retailer’s trial terms and ask the manufacturer or retailer about the particular model before making changes to the mattress or its support.

How to handle a new-foam smell
A noticeable odor is a common experience with new foam and is associated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Sleep Foundation says the smell commonly fades over hours to days, though traces can last longer for some products. Ventilation and time are practical steps; a fixed odor-free deadline cannot be promised (Sleep Foundation on mattress off-gassing).
An odor by itself does not establish a particular health hazard, nor does it prove that an individual will have no reaction. Sleep Foundation notes that people with respiratory conditions or chemical sensitivities may experience irritation or symptoms. If the odor is uncomfortable, air out the room or use a separate ventilated space; if symptoms occur, stop using the mattress and seek advice appropriate to your situation (Sleep Foundation on mattress off-gassing).

When to contact the manufacturer or retailer
Ask for model-specific guidance if the mattress does not expand as expected, remains unusually uncomfortable after you have followed its setup instructions, or has an odor that concerns you. The available guidance does not establish a universal point at which slow expansion, persistent odor, or firmness proves a defect. The maker or seller can explain the relevant setup, care, health, warranty, and return terms.
Do not flip or rotate a foam mattress unless its maker permits it. Care directions differ by model, so consult the manual before changing its orientation or support setup (Sleep Foundation mattress care).
