Indoors, a poinsettia’s colorful display typically lasts several weeks. University extension estimates range from four to six weeks after the target flowering date to six to eight weeks with good care; Iowa State says a well-cared-for plant may remain attractive for two to three months. The whole plant can live beyond its colorful display, but keeping it alive and getting it to color again are different challenges.
How long do poinsettias last indoors?
There is no single guaranteed lifespan for a poinsettia’s holiday display. Published extension estimates measure slightly different things and use different starting points:
| Estimate | What it describes | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Four to six weeks | Attractive after the target flowering date | University of New Hampshire Extension; fact sheet date not stated |
| Six to eight weeks | Longevity with good care | University of Illinois Extension; publication date not stated on the care page |
| Two to three months | How long a plant may remain attractive with good home care | Iowa State University Extension and Outreach; updated December 3, 2024 |
These are estimates, not a controlled comparison or a promise for every plant. The display’s condition when you buy it, time since flowering, and care at home all affect how long it looks good. For planning, expect several weeks; six to eight weeks is a useful estimate with good care.
What does “lasting” mean for a poinsettia?
The colorful display
The large red, pink, white, or other colored parts are not flower petals. They are modified leaves called bracts; the actual flowers are the small yellow-green structures, known as cyathia, in the center. Illinois Extension horticulture educator Ken Johnson puts it plainly: “The colored parts of the plants aren’t flowers,” Illinois Extension explains that the bracts and leaves may drop after the central flowers shed pollen, so choose a plant with little or no visible pollen if you want a longer display.

The living plant
A poinsettia can outlive its colorful display. It may be kept as a houseplant into spring, but maintaining green growth is not the same as making it produce colorful bracts again. Reblooming takes a year-round routine and careful control of autumn darkness.
How do I make a poinsettia last longer?
Choose and transport it carefully
- Look for a plant with firm foliage and no visible cold damage. For a potentially longer display, choose one whose central flowers show little or no pollen.
- Make the plant your last shopping stop. Outside, protect it with a sleeve or wrap and take it directly to a heated vehicle and home. Even brief exposure to freezing temperatures can blacken leaves and cause them to drop, according to Iowa State Extension.
Give it steady indoor conditions
- Provide bright natural light.
- Aim for roughly 60–70°F during the day and temperatures in the mid-50s at night. Avoid cold window glass, drafts, exterior doors, and heat registers; excessive heat can shorten the display’s life.
- Water when the soil surface feels dry rather than following a fixed calendar. Let excess water drain, then empty the saucer or decorative cover. Both drought stress and overwatering can lead to leaf loss; saturated soil can cause root rot.
These conditions are consistent with recommendations from University of Maryland Extension, Illinois Extension, and Iowa State Extension.

Can I keep my poinsettia after Christmas?
Yes. After the bracts lose their appeal, you can keep the plant growing, though it may become leggy and will not stay in holiday color without a reblooming routine. Iowa State’s after-holiday guidance describes cutting stems back in March, acclimating the plant before moving it outdoors in late spring, and bringing it inside in mid-September. Specific timing can vary with local conditions, so use regional extension advice for your climate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will my poinsettia bloom again next year?
It can, but reblooming is an involved optional project rather than a simple extension of the holiday display. The plant needs a full seasonal care routine and weeks of uninterrupted darkness in autumn. For example, Iowa State describes providing complete darkness from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. starting in early October until the bracts color; Illinois Extension gives a similar schedule beginning around late September and continuing into December. Follow one complete regional guide rather than mixing schedules.

Even with careful attention, a home-kept poinsettia is unlikely to match the size and quality of a greenhouse-grown plant, cautions Maryland Extension. If you take on reblooming, Maryland recommends commercially available soilless growing media when repotting.
