The best surge protector with USB ports depends on whether you need more AC outlets, a compact wall tap or higher-speed charging. For most desks and media consoles, the Anker 351 combines 12 AC outlets with a claimed 2,100-joule rating and 20W USB-C charging. For a model with documented cULus compliance to UL 1363 and UL 1449, consider the CyberPower P1004UC15. Neither choice replaces a high-wattage laptop charger: USB-C describes the connector, not the charging speed.
This guide covers U.S. 120/125-volt household power and NEMA 5-15 outlets. Product specifications and prices can change; CyberPower prices below are listed MSRPs, and Anker’s price is the amount shown on its U.S. listing in the August 16, 2026 snapshot.

How to tell a surge protector from a USB power strip
A power strip adds receptacles; a surge protector also contains components intended to suppress voltage surges. USB ports establish only that the unit can charge USB devices. They do not show that its AC outlets have surge suppression or establish how much protection it offers.
Rank #3
- Power Strip with 6 Outlets & 3USB Ports: 6 AC Surge protector outlets(1680 Joules) including 1 Widely Spaced Outlet, 2 USB A Ports & 1 USB C Port, 6 feet power cord, Surge protector indicator and 10A Overload Protector switch protects against spikes and fluctuations.

Look for a disclosed joule rating and a model-specific safety listing, such as UL 1449 or cULus documentation where applicable. Belkin advises treating a product as a power strip rather than a surge protector if its packaging does not list a joule rating or UL 1449 certification; see Belkin’s surge-protector guidance. Do not infer that every product from a brand has the same certification.
How much surge protection do you need?
Joules indicate energy absorption capacity and help compare products, but they do not guarantee that equipment will survive a surge. As a practical shopping guide:
Recommended Free Tools
- Under 1,000 joules: A basic tier for chargers and low-cost accessories; not the preferred choice for expensive electronics.
- 1,000–2,000 joules: A reasonable general-purpose range for desks, televisions, consoles and smaller home-office setups.
- 2,000 joules or more: A useful preference when protecting several expensive devices, particularly if the price difference is small.
A higher joule figure alone does not establish better clamping performance, construction, thermal protection or certification. For perspective, CyberPower lists 600 joules for the P403UC15, 900 for the P6WUCL, 1,500 for the P405UC, and 2,400 for both the P6WSUC15 and P1004UC15. Surge suppression components can degrade or be exhausted after a major event even if the strip still powers devices.

What USB-C wattage should you look for?
USB-C is a connector type, not a guarantee of fast charging. Check the wattage, whether USB Power Delivery (USB PD) is explicitly supported, how total output is shared across ports, and whether your device and cable support the required protocol and power level.
- 5–12W: Usually suited to small accessories such as earbuds and watches.
- 15–20W: Useful for phones, many tablets and small devices; this is the range of the products highlighted here.
- 30–45W: A better target for tablets and some ultraportable laptops.
- 65W or more: Often needed by laptops or for faster charging across multiple devices.
- 100W or more: Relevant to larger laptops, docks and multi-device charging setups.
The Anker 351’s USB-C output is rated up to 20W, while CyberPower lists 15W USB-C for the P6WSUC15 and P1004UC15. A laptop may charge slowly, fail to charge while in use, or continue to lose battery at those levels. For laptop power, pair a surge protector with a separate USB-C PD charger or charging station rated for your device—often 65W or more.
What else should you check before buying?
- Certification and grounding: Confirm the exact model’s safety documentation and use a grounded three-prong receptacle. Where available, look for overload protection and a protection or ground-status indicator.
- Outlet layout: Count the plugs you need and consider whether wide-spaced outlets are necessary for bulky adapters. More outlets do not increase the wall circuit’s capacity.
- Cord and plug: Choose a cord long enough for the intended placement. A right-angle plug can fit better behind furniture; a wall tap avoids a cord but can block neighboring outlets.
- USB behavior: Check per-port and total wattage, whether simultaneous use reduces output, and whether USB PD is specified. Do not assume USB charging circuitry has the same surge rating as AC outlets; manufacturers must document that separately.
- Filtering: EMI/RFI filtering may be useful in some audio, video or office setups, but it is not a substitute for surge protection.
- Guarantee terms: Treat a connected-equipment guarantee as a conditional manufacturer program, not insurance. Review registration requirements, deadlines, covered equipment, proof of purchase, qualifying causes, exclusions and whether the manufacturer can repair, replace or reimburse at its discretion. A headline dollar limit is not a promised payout.
- Price and availability: Manufacturer prices and product details change. Compare the current listing and exact model before purchase rather than treating an MSRP or snapshot price as permanent.
When a different kind of protection makes more sense
For high-speed laptop charging
A USB charging station can provide more USB-C power than a conventional surge strip, but it is not automatically a surge protector. Anker’s surge-protector and charging-station collection includes higher-wattage charging products; verify the individual product’s surge rating and safety documentation before relying on it to protect AC-connected equipment.

For brief outages and safe shutdowns
A surge protector does not provide battery backup. A UPS is the better category for a desktop computer, NAS, router or workstation that must stay on through a short outage or shut down cleanly.
For broader building protection
A whole-home surge protective device can address surges across more of a building’s electrical system, but it requires compatible installation. A plug-in protector is not a substitute for correct grounding or whole-home protection, and it cannot guarantee protection against every surge, including severe lightning-related events.
Quick Recap
Use and replace the strip safely
- Plug the protector directly into a properly grounded wall outlet unless its instructions explicitly allow another arrangement.
- Do not plug one power strip into another. Daisy-chaining can overload the upstream strip or circuit and complicate protection.
- Do not connect high-draw appliances such as space heaters, hair dryers, kettles, microwaves or refrigerators unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it. A U.S. strip’s 15A/1,875W maximum circuit rating is not a recommendation to operate appliances at the limit.
- Follow the product instructions before using any extension cord; many surge strips are designed to plug directly into the wall.
- Replace a strip after a major surge or if it has visible heat damage, melted plastic, a damaged cord or plug, repeated breaker trips, or a protection-indicator fault. Stop using cracked or scorched equipment.
- If a grounded-status indicator repeatedly shows a fault, have the receptacle checked by a qualified electrician.
