You can make Joyce Byers’s recognizable alphabet-and-lights wall with a regular Christmas light string and paper letters—no code or special wiring required. For lights that activate one letter at a time, build a more advanced version with addressable LEDs and a compatible controller. Choose between a direct wall display and a portable panel based on how permanent you want the installation to be.
What makes it Joyce’s wall?
In Stranger Things, Joyce Byers uses Christmas lights to communicate with her missing son. Netflix’s production-history account describes set decorator Jess Royal arranging the lights on the Byers living-room set and working with the show’s electricians on a control panel for individual bulbs and overhead lights. The essential visual is simple: a visible alphabet, with a bulb aligned to each letter. Microsoft developer Pete Brown demonstrated one compact version at about 4 by 4 feet; that is one project example, not a required size. Pete Brown’s Windows Developer Blog project

Build a simple alphabet wall
Gather materials
- A Christmas light string. C7 or C9 bulbs can suit the familiar oversized-bulb look; these bulb types appear in older project examples, not as current product recommendations.
- Black alphabet letters on paper, or a canvas, fabric and black paint.
- Optional thread to secure bulbs to a panel, or clear mini hooks and poster putty for positioning lights where appropriate.
Arrange and mount the letters and lights
- Choose a wall or portable panel and decide how much space you have. Make the alphabet easy to read, with enough room to place a bulb beside each letter.
- Put the letters in clear rows. For a quick version, print or write letters on separate sheets and arrange them on the wall. For a panel, one published approach covers a canvas with fabric and paints on the letters.
- Position the light string so one bulb sits beside each letter. On a fabric-covered canvas, thread can hold bulbs in place. For a wall, clear mini hooks or poster putty may help position the string.
- Before applying adhesive or hooks, check the product directions and the wall surface. Do not assume a mounting method will come away without marks.
- Plug in the light string according to its manufacturer’s instructions and check that the bulbs are visible beside their letters.
These are decorative lights: an ordinary string does not become individually addressable just because its bulbs sit next to letters. For the basic visual effect, that distinction does not matter.

Make a programmable version
To light selected letters on command, use addressable LEDs and a compatible controller. An ordinary Christmas light string is not a substitute for individually addressable pixels. This is an optional maker project, not a casual extension of hanging decorative lights.
Example configurations from earlier projects
- A 2016 Woodland Manufacturing tutorial describes a 50-pixel WS2811 addressable string, an Arduino, wire and a 12V 2A power supply. Its project programs the lights to spell messages and then reset. Woodland Manufacturing’s project tutorial

These are historical project setups, not universal compatibility specifications. The 12V 2A supply belongs to the cited 50-pixel example; it should not be assumed suitable for another LED string or controller.

Plan for compatibility before wiring
- Select addressable LEDs and a controller whose current documentation confirms they work together.
- Match the power supply to the exact components and their requirements; verify voltage, current and connections against their manufacturers’ instructions.
- Use current instructions for the specific board, lights and software you choose. The older tutorials do not establish current availability, prices or compatibility for products sold today.
- Keep the project within the components’ documented electrical limits. The cited tutorials are not current consumer safety guidance for modifying mains-voltage lights; do not treat cutting or rewiring those lights as a beginner step.
Which version should you make?
- Choose a regular string if the goal is the recognizable alphabet wall and you do not need letters to activate separately.
- Choose addressable LEDs and a compatible controller if you want to program individual letters to light in response to a message.
- Mount directly on a wall if the display is meant to remain there and the surface and mounting products are suitable.
- Use a portable panel if you want to move or store the display or would rather not attach the layout directly to the wall.
