In 2020, Belgian sustainable-construction company Kamp C used a fixed, construction-scale concrete printer to produce a two-story structure in one continuous print. The printer occupied a reported 32-by-32-foot envelope, while the finished building covered about 980 square feet. It included solar panels and underfloor heating, but Kamp C presented it primarily as a demonstration of construction 3D printing—not as a standard, move-in-ready house for sale.
What Kamp C actually printed
Kamp C deposited a specially mixed concrete in successive layers, allowing the walls and other printed elements to be formed without the conventional reusable molds known as formwork. The company described the project as the biggest house printed in one piece with a fixed printer at the time of the report.

How a concrete 3D printer can make two stories
1. A fixed printer defines the work area
Unlike a desktop printer, the Kamp C machine was a building-scale system installed around the construction area. Its reported 32-by-32-foot envelope gave the print head room to trace the walls in place. Because the machine was fixed, the building had to fit within that operating zone or the setup would need to be repositioned for another phase.
2. Concrete is formulated for pumping and stacking
Printable concrete must flow through the delivery system, hold its shape after placement and bond sufficiently to the next layer. Kamp C used a specially mixed formulation rather than ordinary ready-mix concrete. The printer placed the material in controlled horizontal courses, building wall geometry without first assembling full-height formwork.

3. Reinforcement is integrated selectively
The project did not rely on a conventional cage of heavy steel reinforcement throughout the structure. Kamp C project manager Marijke Aerts said the concrete contained fibers and that the amount of wire-mesh reinforcement was “extremely limited.” The reinforcement strategy is therefore part of the engineering design; it is not evidence that every printed concrete building can omit steel.
4. Building services are added as construction progresses
Printing the shell does not eliminate every trade. Openings, connections, utilities, finishes and equipment still have to be coordinated around the printed walls. Kamp C’s demonstration included solar panels and underfloor heating, showing how building systems can be incorporated into a broader construction sequence.

Was it a livable house?
The structure had features associated with a home, but the project was characterized as a demonstration. Emiel Ascione of Kamp C said printing the building was “mainly a statement” intended to show the construction industry the technique’s accessibility and potential. The available report does not establish a normal occupancy record, a sale to a homeowner or proof that the building met every requirement for routine residential use.
That distinction matters. A printed demonstration can validate a printer’s reach, material handling and ability to create a building-scale shell, while an occupied house also requires complete structural documentation, moisture control, insulation, fire safety, mechanical and electrical systems, inspections and approval under local building rules.

What advantages did Kamp C claim?
Less formwork
Layer-by-layer deposition can create walls directly, reducing the need to fabricate, install and remove molds. Aerts attributed an estimated 60% saving in material, time and budget to making formwork redundant. That figure was a project estimate reported by Futurism, not an independently audited cost study.
More selective material use
A printer places concrete where the design calls for it instead of filling a complete mold. In principle, that can reduce waste and make geometries difficult to produce with conventional methods practical. Actual savings depend on the concrete mix, print path, reinforcement, foundations, transport, finishing and the number of buildings produced.

- Rapid prototyping, high-speed printing-The maximum printing speed can reach 40mm/s, and the layer thickness can be set to 0.3-3mm.
- Dual axis metal guide rail, smooth and stable running, strong and durable
Potentially shorter construction cycles
Automated placement can run continuously once the printer, mix and design are prepared. It does not remove curing time, site preparation, service installation or inspection, so “faster” should be understood as a potential reduction in selected construction steps rather than a guaranteed schedule for a finished home.
Reported compressive strength
Aerts told Futurism that the material’s compressive strength was three times greater than that of conventional quick-build brick. This was an attributed project statement; the report did not provide an independent laboratory protocol, specimen sizes, curing conditions or a full structural test program. It should not be read as a universal comparison between all 3D-printed concrete and all masonry.

What this project does not prove
- It does not establish that a buyer can order a comparable finished house from Kamp C.
- It does not provide an independent total-cost comparison with conventional construction.
- It does not show that every printable concrete mix has three times the compressive strength of brick.
- It does not settle permitting, insurance or code approval for occupied 3D-printed homes in every jurisdiction.
- It does not establish that the 32-by-32-foot printer remains Europe’s largest today; the description applied to the project reported in 2020.
How to evaluate a construction 3D-printing claim
- Check the machine envelope and mobility. A fixed gantry, a rail-mounted system and a mobile robot impose different site and building-size limits.
- Ask what was actually printed. Some projects print only walls, while others claim a more complete structural package.
- Review the concrete formulation. Pumpability, layer bonding, curing and durability are as important as the printer itself.
- Identify the reinforcement method. Fibers, mesh, bars and post-tensioning provide different structural behavior and installation demands.
- Separate shell time from completed-home time. Foundations, roofs, windows, utilities, finishes and inspections remain part of the schedule.
- Demand test and approval records. Independent structural tests, engineering calculations and local permits are stronger evidence than a demonstration claim alone.
- Compare the full project cost. Include printer setup, labor, concrete, reinforcement, foundations, transport, finishing, maintenance and compliance work.
Why the Belgian demonstration still matters
Kamp C’s house showed that a fixed printer could operate at architectural scale and produce two levels of concrete construction in one piece. Its importance is less about declaring a finished replacement for conventional building and more about demonstrating a different production method: digitally controlled placement, reduced dependence on formwork and a concrete-and-reinforcement system designed around the printer.
The project’s strongest lessons are also its limits. The reported 60% savings and three-times-strength figures came from Kamp C’s project management, while the structure’s demonstration status leaves questions about independent testing, routine occupancy and repeatable economics. Those questions must be answered project by project before construction 3D printing can be judged against conventional housing on cost, safety or code compliance.
