The WOOD Magazine plan produces an approximately 7-inch-wide, 14-inch-high lamp and provides full-size patterns for the shade supports and corbels. You can cut the mica yourself from an 18×36-inch sheet or purchase a project kit with pre-cut panels and electrical hardware (bulb not included).
Read the official WOOD Magazine plan before cutting: its patterns and dimensions control the finished project.
What you are building
The lamp has a streamlined wooden shade framework assembled with repeated half-lapped parts. Four mica panels sit in rabbets in that frame. The base is approximately 7 inches wide and the completed lamp approximately 14 inches high, according to the current Woodcraft plan listing: Woodcraft downloadable-plan listing.
Optional copper pine-cone motifs add a period Arts & Crafts accent. The plan appeared in WOOD Issue 148 (May 2003); the official plan page and downloadable version remain the references for the patterns and construction sequence.

- Optional 24-gauge copper sheet for the pine-cone motifs; the project-kit listing specifies a 4×14-inch piece.
- Five-minute epoxy for attaching the optional copper pieces.
- Wood stain or another chosen finish.
- Lamp electrical hardware: socket, cord and related components, either sourced individually or supplied by the project kit. Bulbs are not included in the kit.
What the project kit includes
The Wood Store kit listing says the kit supplies electrical hardware (except bulbs), four cut mica sheets and a 4×14-inch piece of 24-gauge copper; lumber is excluded. Check the current contents before ordering: Wood Store plan and project-kit listing.
Tools
The retailer tool list identifies a tablesaw, drill, clamps, thickness planer, table-mounted router, bandsaw and drill press. Use the machines appropriate to your shop and follow their guards, dust collection and safe operating procedures. A complete tool reference appears at WoodworkersWorkshop.

| Mica | Cut four panels from one 18×36-inch sheet | Use pre-cut panels | Self-cutting gives you the sheet-layout and trimming work; a kit removes that cutting step. |
| Wood | Quartersawn oak | Another suitable stable hardwood | Oak is the documented example; the alternative must still machine cleanly and remain stable. |
| Electrical parts | Source socket, cord and hardware individually | Buy the project kit | The kit includes electrical hardware but not bulbs; lumber and finish remain separate purchases. |
Build the wooden frame
1. Prepare duplicate stock
Select straight quartersawn oak or another suitable hardwood. Mill the stock to the dimensions in the plan, using the thickness planer where required, and make duplicate parts together so matching pieces remain consistent. Keep the full-size patterns with the project; they establish the profiles for the shade supports and corbels.
2. Transfer and cut the shaped parts
Trace the supplied full-size patterns onto the prepared stock. Cut the supports and corbels on the bandsaw, then sand to the pattern line. Drill any required holes with the drill press before assembly while the parts are easy to hold accurately.

- Classic Empire Style Design – Traditional empire-shaped lamp shade adds warmth and character to bridge lamps, table lamps, and rustic or lodge-inspired décor.
- Rich Amber Mica Construction – Amber-colored mica panels create a warm, inviting glow that enhances Craftsman, Mission, Western, and traditional interiors.
- Copper Foil Frame Construction – Built with a durable copper foil frame for lasting support and a handcrafted appearance that complements vintage-inspired lighting.
- Decorative Faux Leather Trim – Finished with faux leather trim that adds distinctive detail and pairs beautifully with rustic, cabin, and lodge-style furnishings.
- Ideal for Bridge Lamps – Features a flush washer fitter and is specifically well-suited for bridge lamps, while also serving as an attractive replacement shade for compatible lighting fixtures.
3. Form the half-lap framework
Cut the repeated rails, stiles and related frame members according to the plan. Make the half-lap joints with the tablesaw or another controlled setup that gives consistent shoulders and a flush assembled surface. Test-fit every joint before applying adhesive.
4. Bevel-rip the stiles and assemble square
Bevel-rip the stiles as directed, then assemble the shade framework. Use clamps to bring the frame square; measure diagonals or use a reliable square before the adhesive sets. The frame must remain even so the mica seats properly in its rabbets.

5. Rout or cut the mica rabbets
Prepare the rabbets that receive the mica using the table-mounted router or the method specified by the plan. Make a test cut in scrap first. Remove sharp splinters and verify that each panel can sit without force before sealing it.

Lay out four panels
Lay the four panel shapes on an 18×36-inch mica sheet as shown in the plan. Cut carefully, then round or smooth the corners as directed. If you buy pre-cut panels, still dry-fit each one because frame tolerances and orientation matter.
Best Value
- Top Width: 13 inches Bottom Width: 15 inches Slope: 10 inches
- Shade Color: Blonde - Shade Shape: Drum
- Fixtures when properly installed and under normal conditions of use are warranted to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for ONE YEAR from date of sale.
Seal the panels in the rabbets
- Place each mica panel in its frame opening and confirm that it sits evenly in the rabbet.
- Apply a continuous bead of clear silicone caulk along the stiles and rails as specified by the plan.
- Press the mica into the caulk without forcing or bowing it, and clean excess sealant while it is workable.
- Leave the assembly undisturbed overnight so the silicone can cure before handling the shade.
WOOD Magazine describes mica as nonflammable and resistant to temperatures up to 1,650°F, while also noting its warm amber translucence: WOOD Magazine official plan. That property does not replace correct lamp assembly, suitable electrical components or safe operating practices.
Add the optional copper decoration
Transfer the pine-cone motif to 24-gauge copper, cut and refine the pieces, then attach them with five-minute epoxy. The kit listing specifies a 4×14-inch copper piece; copper is optional, so the lamp can be completed without the motif. Let the epoxy set according to its instructions before final handling.
Sand, finish and wire the lamp
Finish the wood
Finish-sand the assembled wooden parts, remove dust and apply the stain or finish you selected. Keep finish off the mica and electrical contact surfaces. Allow the finish to dry fully before installing wiring.
Complete the electrical assembly
Install the socket, cord and remaining hardware following the plan’s wiring directions and the component manufacturer’s instructions. A kit supplies the electrical hardware except the bulb; if you buy parts separately, verify that the socket, cord, switch and strain relief are compatible and approved for your location. Disconnect power while assembling and test the completed lamp before regular use. Follow applicable electrical codes, and use a qualified electrician if you are not comfortable making a mains-voltage connection.
Practical checks before you switch it on
- All half-lap joints are fully seated and the frame is square.
- Each mica panel is supported in its rabbet without cracks, sharp corners or forced pressure.
- Silicone has cured overnight and excess caulk has been removed from visible surfaces.
- Copper onlays are firmly bonded, if used.
- Wood finish is dry and clear of the socket and wiring.
- The cord, socket and connections are secured, undamaged and suitable for the installation.
- The bulb is the correct type and rating for the socket and shade; the kit does not supply a bulb.
Get the patterns and plan
Use the official free plan for the construction sequence and mica guidance: WOOD Magazine Arts & Crafts table lamp plan. A separate downloadable version is listed at WOOD Magazine’s downloadable-plan page. Keep the full-size patterns at the bench; they are essential for the shaped supports, corbels and panel layout.
