Google’s October 1, 2025 launch was a platform overhaul, not merely a chatbot update. Gemini for Home changes voice control, the Google Home app, camera intelligence and subscriptions. As of August 18, 2026, rollout remains dependent on country, language, device, firmware and account role. Basic Gemini voice controls are free on supported hardware; the camera features most buyers want—AI descriptions, notifications, Home Brief and searchable video—generally require Google Home Premium Advanced.
Existing Nest owners usually do not need to replace every device. However, migration is consequential: Google says a home that switches from Google Assistant to Gemini cannot switch back.
The short version
| Change | What it means |
|---|---|
| Gemini for Home assistant | More conversational control, questions, media search, alarms, calendars, lists and reminders on compatible speakers and displays. |
| Redesigned Google Home app | More Nest functionality in one app, faster camera browsing and natural-language device search and control. |
| Gemini camera features | AI event descriptions, notifications, Home Brief and searchable history through Ask Home; generally tied to Premium Advanced and eligible cameras. |
| New hardware | Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen), plus a Google Home Speaker (2026). |
| Subscription | Google Home Premium replaced second-generation Nest Aware on October 1, 2025. Advanced was announced at $20 per month or $200 per year in the U.S. |
Google describes the rollout as early access or expanding availability in several support documents. Check the current availability table before assuming a feature is active in your market: Google’s Gemini for Home availability guidance.
What Google changed
Gemini replaces Google Assistant on eligible homes
Gemini for Home is the assistant layer for compatible speakers and displays. It is designed for natural-language requests instead of rigid command syntax, while retaining everyday functions such as timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, media playback and general questions. Google’s launch announcement is at Google’s Gemini for Home announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- Meet the smarter, sharper wired Google Nest Cam Outdoor; with 2K HDR video and Gemini, it knows what to look out for and what to do next[1,2,3](Gemini features require a Google Home premium subscription; try it for 1 month at no cost to you)[4]
- Stay in the know with always-on power: Nest Cam Outdoor keeps you plugged into home, day and night, with no need to recharge or replace batteries
- Google Nest Cam Outdoor keeps your data safe with encrypted video, two-step verification, and enhanced security through your Google Account; and a green LED light lets you know when it’s processing or streaming video
- With an Advanced subscription to Google Home Premium, know more about what’s happening with notifications like “Rabbits eating garden plants”[3]; get even more detailed descriptions and tap to see a summary of what happened[3]
- Video is crisp and clear in 2K HDR, Nest Cam’s highest resolution yet[1,2]; see rich color and details, and see in the dark with night vision; a wider, taller field of view means almost nothing’s out of frame[1] – even in a long driveway or big yard
Accepting the upgrade is not a reversible experiment: Google’s current support page says the home cannot return to Google Assistant afterward. Read the disclosures and confirm that trade-off before opting in.
The Home app is becoming the main control surface
The redesigned app brings core Nest functions together, including support for Nest Thermostats since 2015, Nest Protect smoke and carbon-monoxide alerts, and passcode management for the Nest x Yale Lock. Google also says camera tiles load faster and camera-history navigation is smoother. Details are in Google’s app redesign announcement.
This is not a complete erasure of the Nest app. Cameras bought before 2021 may still require the Nest app or a transfer process, and support remains model-specific. See Google’s migration guidance at device transfer instructions and camera compatibility information.
Google Home Premium replaces second-generation Nest Aware
Premium packages storage, alerts and Gemini camera intelligence. The plan matrix—not a single universal feature list—determines what each camera receives in each region: Google’s current comparison.

What Gemini can actually do
Voice control and questions
On supported devices, you can phrase requests conversationally, ask about connected devices, search for media, set alarms and timers, manage calendars, notes, lists and reminders, and ask general questions. These basic assistant functions do not require a Premium subscription, although country, language, firmware and rollout rules apply. Compatible hardware and firmware are listed at Google’s voice-assistant support page.

- Search your video history with help from Gemini[3]; try something like “What happened to the vase in the living room?” to see a summary and relevant clips (subscription required)
Ask Home and Help me create
Ask Home lets eligible users search and control devices using ordinary language. Help me create can turn a request into an automation on eligible plans. These are app and automation features with their own eligibility rules; having Gemini voice control does not automatically grant every camera or automation capability.
Camera understanding and Home Brief
With eligible cameras and Advanced, Gemini can describe detected events, generate AI notifications, answer natural-language questions about recorded video and provide a Home Brief summarizing relevant activity. Gemini Live offers a more fluid back-and-forth voice experience, but older speakers and displays do not support Live even when they support most other Gemini functions.
AI descriptions are interpretations, not security guarantees. People, animals, vehicles, packages and ordinary household activity can be misclassified.

The new cameras are wired
| Product | Positioning | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen) | Indoor monitoring with Gemini-oriented visual analysis. | Requires a convenient power source; not a battery model. |
| Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen) | Outdoor monitoring integrated with Google Home. | No battery operation or cellular backup was established in Google’s launch material. |
| Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) | Visitor and package monitoring with enhanced event descriptions where supported. | Requires doorbell wiring; product-specific history limits apply. |
Google says the cameras provide richer visual data for multimodal analysis. The launch coverage is at Google’s new camera announcement. They are not mandatory for Gemini: Google’s eligibility guidance includes compatible cameras launched in 2021 or later and legacy cameras transferred to Google Home (camera eligibility rules).
Will existing Nest devices get Gemini?
Google says Gemini is coming to speakers, displays, cameras and doorbells made over roughly the previous decade, but feature parity is not guaranteed. Current supported speakers and displays include:

- Nest Cam has built-in intelligence and can tell the difference between a person, animal, and vehicle and send alerts directly through the Google Home app[1], no subscription required.Controller Type:Google Assistant.Connectivity protocol:Bluetooth;Wi-Fi.Power source type:Battery Powered.Operating Temperature : –4°F to 104°F (–20°C to 40°C).
- Easily check in from anywhere 24/7 with 1080p HDR video[1] with night vision, and see what you missed with 3 hours of free event video history[2]; add a Nest Aware subscription (sold separately) for up to 60 days of video history[3]
- If your Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage, Nest Cam will store up to an hour of recorded events so you can see what you missed[4]. Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a wall plate that can be mounted on your brick wall.
- Put Nest Cam anywhere, outside or in; it’s battery powered, so you don’t need to set it up near an outlet, and the magnetic mount makes installation effortless
- For continuous power and 24/7 video recording with Nest Aware Plus, add a weatherproof power cable or indoor stand with power cable (both sold separately)
- Google Home Speaker (2026)
- Google Nest Hub (first and second generation)
- Google Nest Hub Max
- Google Nest Audio
- Google Nest Mini (second generation)
- Google Home Mini (first generation)
Google lists minimum firmware of Cast 3.76 or higher for speakers and Fuchsia 28 or higher for displays. Older devices generally support most Gemini features but not Gemini Live. Cameras must be set up in Google Home, on supported firmware, and covered by the relevant plan for premium functions. Gemini camera access is restricted to adult Home Admins, according to Google’s camera support documentation.
Google Home Premium: free versus paid
What is free
- Smart-home controls
- Media search and playback
- Alarms and timers
- Calendars
- Notes, lists and reminders
- General questions
Standard
Premium Standard generally provides whole-home event history, intelligent alerts and selected security features. Exact benefits vary by camera and region. It replaced second-generation Nest Aware on October 1, 2025; see Google’s plan transition information.

Advanced
Google announced U.S. pricing of $20 monthly or $200 annually. Advanced adds AI event descriptions, Home Brief, searchable video through Ask Home, AI notifications, expanded camera intelligence, 60 days of event-based history and up to 10 days of continuous 24/7 history on supported wired devices. Google AI Pro subscribers were announced to receive Standard at no extra cost and an option to upgrade to Advanced for an additional $10 monthly; Google AI Ultra subscribers were announced to receive Advanced. Bundle terms and regional prices can change, so verify checkout before subscribing. Pricing details are in Google’s announcement.
Event history is not 24/7 history
For newer wired cameras, Google’s matrix lists short event previews without a subscription, five-minute event recordings retained 30 days with Standard, and five-minute recordings retained 60 days with Advanced. Advanced can also provide 10 days of continuous recording on eligible wired cameras. Battery cameras and some doorbells cannot record continuously. Do not assume the Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) has identical limits; check its row in the feature matrix.

Should you buy a new camera?
Keep existing Nest hardware if…
- Your camera is a compatible 2021-or-newer model or has been transferred to Google Home.
- You mainly need live view, ordinary alerts or free voice controls.
- You accept that premium AI eligibility varies by model.
Consider the new wired cameras if…
- You want the clearest path to Advanced camera features and have reliable power and wiring.
- You value event descriptions, searchable history and Home Brief enough to pay the recurring fee.
- You are comfortable with cloud storage and Google’s ecosystem.
Look elsewhere if…
- You need battery placement, local-only processing, cellular backup or no recurring subscription.
- You prefer Apple Home, Alexa/Ring, Arlo or a local/NVR system and its trade-offs.
- You cannot accept an irreversible assistant migration or AI misclassification risk.
Third-party cameras can integrate more deeply than older “Works with Google Home” products, but compatibility is model-specific. A camera may offer live view without receiving Gemini history search or AI notifications. Check Google’s supported-device list at the partner-device page.
Bottom line
Google’s revamp is strongest for households already invested in Nest that want one app and more natural control. Existing hardware can often participate, so buying a new camera is not an automatic requirement. The decisive caveats are the $20-per-month U.S. Advanced price, wired-only launch cameras, uneven rollout and the permanent switch away from Google Assistant. Try the free assistant and app changes only after checking eligibility; pay for Advanced only if its AI camera analysis and retention are worth the subscription and cloud dependence.
