Update context: Apple opened the HomePod Software 26 public beta on July 24, 2025. By August 18, 2026, Apple’s beta program had moved on to HomePod Software 27, so version 26 is now a historical release line rather than the current beta.
HomePod Software 26 was a modest quality-of-life update. Apple confirmed Crossfade for Apple Music and AirPlay improvements; beta testers also reported controls for viewing and changing a HomePod’s Wi‑Fi network. It was not a major Siri, artificial-intelligence or smart-home redesign.

What HomePod Software 26 added
Crossfade for Apple Music
Crossfade fades out the current song while fading in the next, eliminating the hard pause between tracks. Apple documented Crossfade in the version-26 update history (Apple’s HomePod update notes).
The capability had already been familiar on other Apple devices. Its significance here is that HomePod gained it for Apple Music playback. Crossfade should not be confused with AutoMix, a later and more advanced transition feature on newer Apple platforms.

Reported Wi‑Fi network controls
9to5Mac reported that developer-beta testing exposed the ability to view and change the HomePod’s Wi‑Fi network. That could help when automatic network selection connects a speaker to the wrong network.
Apple’s public version-26 summary does not list Wi‑Fi switching as a headline feature. Treat its availability, wording and supported configurations as build-dependent rather than guaranteed. Switching networks also will not fix router isolation, blocked multicast discovery, mesh-roaming problems or an incompatible guest/VLAN configuration.
AirPlay improvements
Apple’s official notes also describe AirPlay improvements. When audio is playing to a HomePod through AirPlay, you can ask Siri on that HomePod to play the audio on another HomePod in the home (Apple’s update history).
| Change | Status | Practical value |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music Crossfade | Apple-confirmed | Smoother transitions between songs |
| View or change Wi‑Fi network | Reported during beta testing | Potentially easier network troubleshooting |
| AirPlay and Siri routing | Apple-confirmed | Ask one HomePod to send playback to another |
| Major Siri or AI overhaul | Not part of the documented release | Do not expect a transformational redesign |
Is it a major HomePod upgrade?
No. Version 26 is best understood as a compatibility and quality-of-life release for HomePod working alongside iOS 26 and related Apple software. Its visible changes are playback, AirPlay and troubleshooting improvements—not new HomePod hardware, a new Siri architecture or a broad smart-home platform overhaul.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhich HomePod models were eligible?
Apple’s public-beta FAQ explicitly names these devices:
- HomePod mini
- HomePod (2nd generation)
The FAQ does not list the original HomePod for public-beta enrollment. Do not assume it is eligible; check Apple’s current enrollment screen before installing anything (Apple Beta Software Program FAQ).

How to enroll and install the beta
The program was free for anyone with a valid Apple Account who accepted Apple’s agreement. Apple’s FAQ confirms the broad workflow, while exact Home app labels can vary by build:
- Sign in to the Apple Beta Software Program with your Apple Account and enroll.
- Enroll an eligible HomePod through Apple’s beta workflow.
- On an enrolled iPhone or iPad, open the Home app, locate the HomePod’s software-update controls and install the available beta.
- Use Feedback Assistant on an enrolled iPhone, iPad or Mac to report problems.
Install only when you can tolerate interruptions. Apple warns that beta software may contain errors, perform worse than commercial software and require restoration to a shipping release before AppleCare assistance. Installing the public beta does not void the hardware warranty.
What can go wrong on a HomePod beta?
Apple says HomePod mini and HomePod (2nd generation) data and purchases are stored in iCloud, so a conventional device backup is not required. That does not make the update risk-free. A beta HomePod may affect:
- Apple Music playback, Siri response and AirPlay sessions
- Wi‑Fi reachability and Home app availability
- Stereo-pair synchronization
- Apple TV home-theater routing, latency or dialogue handling
- HomeKit automations when the speaker is acting as a home hub
Homes with separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, guest networks, mesh systems or isolated IoT VLANs should be especially cautious. A HomePod used for locks, cameras, alarms or remote access is a poor beta candidate. If you use a stereo pair, update consistently and verify both speakers before relying on them.
Should you install HomePod Software 26?
A reasonable beta candidate
- You specifically want Crossfade on HomePod.
- You regularly diagnose HomePod network connections.
- You want the AirPlay changes early.
- You have a spare HomePod that is not essential to daily routines.
- You are willing to report bugs and troubleshoot intermittent failures.
Wait for the stable release if
- The HomePod is your primary home hub.
- You depend on stereo pairs or Apple TV home theater every day.
- Alarms, automations, Siri, AirPlay or security accessories must remain reliable.
- You expect a major AI or Siri upgrade; version 26 was not that release.
Leaving the beta and returning to normal updates
You can unenroll your Apple Account so the HomePod stops receiving additional beta updates. The installed beta remains on the speaker until Apple offers a newer commercial version through Software Update. Apple’s FAQ does not promise an immediate, on-demand downgrade to an earlier HomePod firmware, so do not install expecting a simple rollback.
Version 26’s status today
Apple’s beta site now promotes HomePod Software 27, while Apple’s update history lists HomePod Software 26.5 within the older 26 release line (Apple beta program; HomePod update history). Readers deciding what to install in 2026 should look for current HomePod 27 documentation rather than treating the 2025 version-26 beta as new.
