How to Pick the Best Upholstery Fabric for Furniture

The right upholstery fabric depends on the furniture, household workload and exact product specification—not a fiber label or one rub-test number. Learn how to compare abrasion methods, care, construction, sunlight, patterns and yardage.

The best upholstery fabric is the one whose tested construction, care requirements and appearance fit the specific furniture and the way your household uses it. Start with the piece—occasional chair, daily dining seat or family sofa—then verify the exact product’s upholstery suitability, cleaning instructions, performance data, sample and yardage with your upholsterer. Fiber names and a single rub-test number cannot make that decision on their own.

Start with the furniture and its real workload

Different pieces experience different forces. A bedroom chair used occasionally does not need the same specification as a sofa used every evening or dining chairs occupied several times a day.

Classify the use

  • Occasional or low traffic: Focus on upholstery suitability, appearance and care, while still checking the maker’s performance information.
  • Regular household use: Compare the exact fabric’s abrasion result, construction, cleaning method, pilling and seam-performance information.
  • Heavy use: Look for a product explicitly identified by its supplier for heavy upholstery use; do not infer that suitability from a high number alone.

Supplier labels such as “residential,” “contract” or “heavy duty” are not universal categories. Treat the manufacturer’s statement for the exact product as the controlling information.

How to read Wyzenbeek and Martindale numbers

Wyzenbeek and Martindale are different abrasion tests. Their results use different methods, do not correlate and must not be converted into one another.

Source and application Wyzenbeek Martindale How to use the figure
Association for Contract Textiles (ACT), woven upholstery in low-traffic/private spaces 15,000 double rubs 20,000 cycles Voluntary, context-specific guideline—not a universal residential buying threshold.
Herman Miller textile quality standards (2017), general contract upholstery 15,000 double rubs 20,000 cycles Manufacturer standard for this application category.
Herman Miller textile quality standards (2017), heavy-duty upholstery 30,000 double rubs 40,000 cycles Manufacturer standard for this application category.

These figures describe test methods and stated application categories, not guaranteed years of service. ACT explains that abrasion tests measure flat abrasion and do not represent every wear condition, such as edge abrasion. Its disclaimer states: “A fabric with twice the number of abrasion cycles does not indicate double the service life.” ACT also notes that results exceeding its guidelines are not indicators of product lifespan; use, maintenance, cleaning and application all affect durability and appearance.

What a rub result can—and cannot—tell you

  • Use it to compare fabrics tested by the same method and considered for a similar application.
  • Do not rank a Martindale result against a Wyzenbeek result as if they were the same scale.
  • Do not use a high result to excuse unsuitable cleaning, weak seams, a vulnerable surface or an application the supplier excludes.

Evaluate the complete fabric specification

Cleaning and household demands

Read the exact care instructions before ordering. Homes with children, pets or frequent entertaining should weigh the permitted cleaning process, whether covers can be removed where relevant, and how easily everyday marks, hair and crumbs will show. “Stain-resistant” is a product claim, not proof that a fabric is stain-proof; no fabric should be described as completely pet-proof or stain-proof.

Construction and snag risk

Tighter, smoother constructions can be a sensible starting point when claws or snagging are concerns, but construction varies within every fiber category. Inspect the actual sample and follow the supplier’s description rather than assuming that a particular fiber is safe for pets.

Pilling and seam performance

Ask for pilling information and seam-performance data in addition to abrasion. These characteristics affect how the fabric looks and behaves at cushions, corners and joins, where a flat abrasion test does not tell the whole story.

Lightfastness and room conditions

Direct sun, heat and moisture can change color or surface appearance. Check the product’s lightfastness information and reduce exposure where practical with layout, window treatments or other shading.

Do not choose by fiber name alone

Velvet, linen blends, cotton blends, chenille, wool and so-called performance fabrics can all perform very differently. Weave, backing, finish, pile and care requirements matter as much as the listed fiber. “Performance fabric” describes a set of properties, not one universal fiber or standard. Compare the exact product’s specification and intended use.

Make the visual choice work on the finished piece

Pattern scale and repeat

A large motif may overwhelm a small chair, while a tiny pattern can disappear on a broad sofa. Record the pattern repeat and discuss where motifs should be centered or matched before calculating yardage.

Pile direction

Directional pile, especially velvet, can look lighter or darker depending on the cutting direction. Confirm the upholsterer’s intended nap direction and whether the design permits the same direction on every component.

Width and geometry

Furniture shape, fabric width, repeat, matching requirements and pile direction determine how much material is needed. A collection-level estimate or a generic chair chart cannot replace a calculation for your exact piece.

How to choose fabric for common questions

“How do I choose upholstery fabric for a sofa?”

  1. Identify whether the sofa receives occasional, regular or heavy use.
  2. Confirm that the exact product is approved for upholstery.
  3. Compare its abrasion method and result with fabrics in the same method and application category.
  4. Check cleaning, pilling, seam performance, lightfastness and surface construction.
  5. View a sample in the room, including the pattern repeat and pile direction.
  6. Give the product data to the upholsterer for a suitability and yardage check.

“What Martindale rating do I need for a family sofa?”

There is no evidence-supported universal household threshold. ACT’s guideline for woven upholstery in low-traffic/private spaces is 20,000 Martindale cycles, while Herman Miller’s 2017 standard lists 20,000 cycles for general contract upholstery and 40,000 for heavy-duty upholstery. Those are contextual standards, not a promise that a family sofa will last a particular number of years. Use the exact supplier’s intended-use statement and evaluate the other specifications as well.

“What upholstery fabric is best for pets?”

No fabric is completely pet-proof. Begin with a construction that is less likely to snag, then verify the exact care method, surface texture, seam information and color’s ability to disguise hair or routine marks. A sample tested in your home is more useful than a fiber label alone.

“How much fabric do I need to reupholster a chair?”

The amount depends on the chair’s dimensions, fabric width, pattern repeat, motif matching, pile direction and the upholsterer’s cutting plan. Supply the exact product details and ask the upholsterer to calculate yardage before purchase; do not rely on a generic estimate.

A pre-order comparison checklist

Put competing fabrics side by side and record the same information for each one:

  • Exact product name and supplier-stated upholstery application.
  • Wyzenbeek or Martindale method and result, with no conversion between methods.
  • Cleaning instructions and any restrictions.
  • Pilling and seam-performance information.
  • Lightfastness information for the intended room.
  • Surface construction, pile and likely snag exposure.
  • Color, pattern scale, repeat, motif placement and pile direction.
  • Fabric width and the upholsterer’s calculated yardage.
  • Sample viewed under the room’s actual lighting.

Before you place the order

  1. Request a sample of the exact fabric, not merely a collection swatch or color image.
  2. Inspect color, texture, pattern scale and pile in the intended room.
  3. Read the current product data and care instructions.
  4. Tell the upholsterer about children, pets, sunlight, expected traffic and cleaning habits.
  5. Have the upholsterer confirm suitability, cutting direction, pattern placement and total yardage.
  6. Keep the product information for future cleaning or repair questions.
