The stone was reported to have come from Turkey, and researchers later examined the extracted tile. However, the evidence currently available does not establish a final species identification or a direct age for this particular specimen. It should therefore be described as an apparent or suspected hominin mandible, not a confirmed human ancestor.
What happened in the kitchen tile?
On April 15, 2024, an anonymous Reddit poster who identified as a dentist shared a photograph of a jaw-like structure with teeth visible in a travertine tile installed in the poster’s parents’ home. The question was whether the object could be part of a hominin mandible and whether such a find was usual.
In April news coverage, the poster said the travertine had been sourced from Turkey. Scientists expressed interest in examining the stone. On October 9, 2024, the poster reported that the tile had been safely removed and sent to a specialized laboratory for study.
That public update is not a peer-reviewed identification or a geological date. In the evidence currently available, no authoritative publication has identified or directly dated the jaw in the tile.

How could a fossil end up in travertine flooring?
Travertine forms around mineral-rich water
Travertine is limestone deposited when calcium-carbonate-rich water—often at springs—loses carbon dioxide and leaves mineral layers behind. Leaves, wood and animal remains can become enclosed as those layers accumulate. As anthropologist John Hawks explained, “Travertine forms near springs where the water is loaded with dissolved calcium carbonate.”
Natural inclusions are part of the material’s appeal. Quarrying, sawing and polishing then expose only a cross-section of whatever was enclosed, so a fossil may appear as an unfamiliar patch, curve or row of tooth-like structures rather than a recognizable skeleton.

Commercial inspection is not fossil identification
Decorative travertine is commonly selected for its natural variation. Quarry and factory checks may concentrate on structural flaws or large defects, while smaller inclusions remain. A polished panel can be handled quickly, and a buyer may choose a sample without seeing the exact slab eventually cut for installation.
A saw can also pass through only part of a bone. Hawks noted that “Random cross-sections of hominin bones are tough to make out from other kinds of fossils without a lot of training.” That makes an unusual fossil easier to miss during fabrication and installation.

Has the jaw been confirmed as hominin?
Not in the evidence available for this story. The initial recognition was visual: the dentist saw a jaw-like form and teeth. Public attention led to expert interest and laboratory examination, but no final taxonomic paper or direct date for the tile specimen has been established here.
- It is reasonable to call the object an apparent or suspected mandible.
- It is not established as a hominin, Homo erectus or any other named species.
- Its geological age remains unknown.
- No measured frequency of hominin fossils in commercial travertine has been reported.
Other animal fossils and non-fossil mineral patterns are more plausible routine inclusions than a recognizable hominin jaw, but the available reporting provides no numerical odds. “Unusual” should not be converted into a percentage.

Why the Kocabaş fossil is relevant—but not an identification
Turkey’s Denizli Basin is known for the separate Kocabaş cranium, a fossil associated with travertine. Researchers publishing a 2014 dating study described the Kocabaş-bearing travertine as at least 1.1 million years old. Later reporting has placed the Kocabaş material in a broader range of about 1.2 to 1.6 million years.
Those figures apply to the Kocabaş fossil-bearing deposit, not to the kitchen tile. A reported Turkish quarry source is not enough to establish that the tile came from the same basin, quarry layer or geological unit. The tile would require secure provenance and specimen-specific geological or laboratory analysis.

The Kocabaş specimen is also a cranial fossil, whereas the tile contains a suspected mandible. A 2024 geometric-morphometric study argued that assigning Kocabaş to Homo erectus sensu lato may be unwarranted. That ongoing debate concerns Kocabaş alone and does not provide a species name for the jaw in the floor.
| Question | Jaw in the travertine tile | Kocabaş fossil |
|---|---|---|
| Specimen type | Apparent mandible with tooth-like structures in a cut tile | Cranial specimen |
| Provenance | Stone reportedly sourced from Turkey; exact quarry and layer not established | Fossil-bearing locality in the Denizli Basin |
| Dating evidence | No direct age established for the tile specimen | Published dating work concerns the Kocabaş-bearing travertine |
| Taxonomic certainty | Unresolved | Taxonomic assignment remains debated |
What would be needed to identify it?
A credible conclusion would require more than a photograph or visual resemblance. Specialists would need to document the specimen and its context, determine whether the structure is bone and teeth rather than mineral pattern or another animal fossil, and analyze the surrounding stone. Secure quarry information would help connect the tile to a geological unit, while dating methods would have to be appropriate to that material and preservation history.
Because cutting may have removed diagnostic anatomy, even laboratory work might produce an indeterminate result. A fragment can show enough structure to establish that it is fossil bone without preserving enough features for a species-level identification.
What this does—and does not—mean for homeowners
The story shows that natural stone can contain unexpected inclusions, not that homes commonly contain human-ancestor fossils. No survey has established how often hominin remains occur in commercial travertine, and the available evidence does not justify a probability for any individual tile.

The reported specimen was extracted for specialized study rather than investigated through home testing.
