Remove driveway snow fastest by preparing before the storm, clearing in short repeated passes, pushing loose snow instead of lifting it, and choosing equipment that matches your driveway and physical capacity. Clear the snow mechanically first; use traction material or a small amount of deicer only for remaining ice.
1. Prepare before the storm arrives
Move vehicles off the driveway and stage a pusher, scoop shovel, traction material, gloves, boots and any snow blower where you can reach them without crossing an icy path. Decide where snow will go before you start. The pile should not block your view when backing out, cover a drain, narrow a walkway or force meltwater to cross the cleared driving route.
2. Clear in repeated passes
Do not wait for the entire storm to finish when accumulation is substantial. Remove an early layer, then return after more snow falls. Fresh snow is lighter and less compacted; repeated passes reduce the amount you must lift and make wind-packed sections easier to break up.
3. Match the shovel to the snow
Use a pusher for loose powder
A wide, pusher-style shovel is efficient for light snow on a reasonably level driveway. Keep the blade on the surface and steer snow toward the planned pile rather than filling and throwing it.

Switch to a scoop for dense sections
Use a smaller scoop shovel for wet, heavy or wind-packed snow and for the ridge left by a plow. Smaller loads are easier to control and put less sudden strain on your back and shoulders.
4. Use safer shovel mechanics
The National Safety Council (NSC) reports thousands of snow-removal injuries and as many as 100 deaths each year. Its guidance is direct: “Push the snow rather than lifting it” and “Lift with your legs, not your back.”

- SNOW SHOVEL AND SHOW PUSHER: 18-in combination blade shape is ideal for shoveling and pushing snow
- DURABLE BLADE: Nylon wear strip prolongs blade life and does not cause damage to deck, patio and other ground surfaces
- ERGONOMIC HANDLE: Ergonomic handle for easier shoveling; 37.4 in. ergonomic handle for more comfortable shoveling
- OVERSIZED HANDLE: Oversized D-Grip handle for comfortable grip with gloved hands
- Warm up gradually before strenuous clearing and start at an easy pace.
- Keep the shovel close to your body, take small or partially filled loads, and avoid twisting while carrying them.
- Turn your whole body toward the snow pile; do not rotate your spine to throw.
- Take frequent breaks, especially in wet or deep snow.
- Stop immediately for chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, weakness or pain. NSC’s warning is unambiguous: “A clear driveway is not worth your life.”
5. Work in short strips
Divide the driveway into narrow lanes and clear one strip at a time. Short pushes keep the load manageable and shorten the distance to the pile. Place snow where melting water can drain away from the driveway, steps and pedestrian route; otherwise it can refreeze into a new ice band.
6. Protect traction while you work
Wear boots with dependable tread and keep traction material available for isolated icy patches. Clear snow before spreading it so the material is not buried under another layer. Walk deliberately, keep one hand free when possible, and treat shaded edges, slopes and the area beside parked vehicles as high-risk zones.

- COMFORTABLE & OPERATIONAL CONTROL: Features a stable, ergonomic design. Snow slides off making your shoveling experience significantly less work intense. No lifting or scooping greatly decreasing back injuries.
- MADE IN USA – Proudly designed, sourced and produced in the USA. See our raving reviews from top snow professionals, churches, property managers and other commercial use.
7. Apply deicer sparingly and after clearing
Mechanical removal should do most of the work. After shoveling, apply a deicer only where a bonded ice film remains and follow the product label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says safer home deicer options are available, but chemical deicers can harm pets, vegetation and the environment. Sweep up leftover granules when conditions allow and keep products away from children and animals.
| Deicer decision | What to check before use |
|---|---|
| Effective temperature range | Use the label’s stated range; a generally applicable temperature figure is not established here. |
| Surface compatibility | Confirm the product is suitable for your concrete, asphalt, pavers or other surface; follow the manufacturer’s warnings. |
| Pets and plants | Prefer the least hazardous labeled option, keep pets away during application and prevent runoff into planting beds. |
| Corrosion | Limit contact with metal door hardware, vehicles and reinforced concrete where the label identifies corrosion concerns. |
| Application control | Measure and spread only the labeled amount after snow removal rather than blanketing the driveway. |
8. Escalate to a snow blower when the scale demands it
A snow blower becomes more practical as driveway area, accumulation and snow density increase, or when lifting is unsafe. Before buying, compare the machine’s clearing capacity and chute control with your driveway, plus storage space, noise and maintenance. A blower still requires safe operation: keep people clear of the discharge path, stop the machine before clearing a blockage and follow its manual.

| Option | Best fit | Lifting tolerance | Purchase and storage | Noise and maintenance | Surface considerations |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pusher shovel | Small to medium areas with loose, shallow snow | Lowest lifting when snow can be pushed | Lowest cost and easiest storage | Quiet; minimal maintenance | Works best on fairly even surfaces |
| Scoop shovel | Dense, wet, wind-packed snow and plow berms | Requires controlled lifting; use small loads | Low cost; compact storage | Quiet; minimal maintenance | Useful around steps, edges and tight spaces |
| Snow blower | Larger driveways or repeated deep accumulation | Reduces shoveling but requires safe handling | Higher purchase cost and dedicated storage | Noisier; fuel, battery or mechanical maintenance | Choose a model suited to the surface and terrain |
9. Hire help when the risk is too high
Arrange assistance or a local snow-removal service if you have heart disease, a recent injury, limited mobility or unsafe storm conditions. Hiring is also sensible when deep or wet snow would require repeated heavy lifting, when the driveway is steep, or when you cannot operate equipment safely. No time saved by doing it yourself offsets a medical emergency or fall.
