A new vinyl cutter can do far more than make stickers. With the right material, it can produce wall graphics, durable labels, heat-applied clothing designs, cards, paper flowers, signs and dimensional decorations. Start by matching the project to adhesive vinyl, heat-transfer vinyl (iron-on) or paper/cardstock, then confirm that your cutter, blade, mat and software support that material.

Choose the right material before you cut

Adhesive vinyl sticks to a prepared surface. Heat-transfer vinyl is cut as a mirror image and applied to suitable textiles with heat. Permanent and removable adhesive vinyl are not interchangeable: Cricut positions permanent vinyl for longer-lasting and outdoor applications, while removable vinyl is intended for temporary or indoor uses. Product-family claims such as water, UV or residue resistance do not guarantee a particular lifespan on every surface. See Cricut’s materials catalog, vinyl guide and material-selection guide.

Project type Typical material Application and preparation
Decals, labels and signs Removable or permanent adhesive vinyl Clean and dry a smooth surface; use transfer tape for intricate designs.
Shirts and textile décor Heat-transfer vinyl (iron-on) Mirror the design, weed it, and apply heat using the material and base selected in the manufacturer’s heat guide.
Cards, invitations and decorations Paper or cardstock Use a blade and mat approved for the stock’s thickness and finish.

A manufacturer checklist groups shirts, pillows and tea towels with iron-on; tumblers, labels and home décor with vinyl; and cards, flowers and invitations with paper/cardstock. It also identifies transfer tape, a weeding tool and a heat press as useful accessories for the relevant jobs (Cricut beginner project checklist; materials cheatsheet). These are Cricut-specific examples, not a promise that every cutter accepts every material. Cricut Smart Materials, for example, require compatible Cricut machines.

A reliable first-project workflow

  1. Define the base. Record whether it is glass, painted wall, plastic, metal, fabric, paper or cardstock, plus its texture, curvature and exposure to water, sun or heat.
  2. Select the material. Choose adhesive vinyl, heat-transfer vinyl or paper/cardstock. For adhesive work, decide whether removable or permanent is appropriate; for textiles, verify the transfer material is made for the fabric.
  3. Check compatibility. Read your cutter’s current material chart for blade, mat, carrier, maximum dimensions and software support. Do not assume a Smart Material or specialty vinyl works in a non-compatible machine.
  4. Test a small piece. Use an offcut or inconspicuous area to check cutting, weeding, adhesion and finish before making the full project.
  5. Prepare and apply. Clean and dry adhesive surfaces. Weed and use transfer tape when needed. Mirror iron-on designs and use the exact manufacturer setting for the selected material and base.
  6. Care for the result. Follow the blank, vinyl and textile-care instructions. Exposure, abrasion, cleaners and repeated washing can change the outcome.
