Researchers found that viral contamination on restroom surfaces did not depend on lid position. That result concerns a controlled contamination experiment—not proof that flushing is harmless, that aerosols are absent, or that lid position can never matter.
What the 2024 study actually tested
Researchers seeded household and public toilet bowls with bacteriophage MS2, a laboratory surrogate for human enteric viruses. They flushed the toilets with lids open or closed, then measured contamination on toilet and restroom surfaces.
The household-toilet comparison found no lid-position effect on measured viral contamination. The study’s abstract states: Viral contamination of restroom surfaces did not depend on toilet lid position (up or down).
This was an environmental contamination study. It did not track illnesses, infection rates, or person-to-person transmission among toilet users.

How to interpret “it doesn’t matter”
“It doesn’t matter” is accurate only for the study’s measured outcome and conditions: surface contamination after flushing inoculated toilets. It should not be expanded into broader claims about health risk.
- Measured: viral surrogate on restroom surfaces.
- Not measured: infections in people, illness incidence, or whether a specific toilet design causes disease.
- Still possible: flushing can generate droplets and aerosols, and room ventilation, toilet geometry, flushing mechanism, and cleaning practices can change what happens.
What other evidence says about toilet aerosols
A CDC-hosted review of literature available at the time described potentially infectious aerosols from flushing, but found that studies had not clearly demonstrated or refuted toilet-plume disease transmission. The health significance of that exposure therefore remained largely uncharacterized in the review.

- Grip-Tight installation hardware makes it easy to fasten a slow close toilet seat – everything is done from above the bowl
- ReadyLatch hinge provides a positive lock/unlock latch to securely hold toilet seat elongated in position, yet seat easily removes for cleaning or adjusting fit. Grip-Tight bumpers hold seat firmly in place
- Contoured seat for user comfort. Color-matched plastic hinges
- Fits most elongated toilets
- Toilet seats are not returnable to Kohler Co. if opened or outside of original packaging
A separate 2024 experiment in public toilets also reported no significant difference in bioaerosol concentration between open and closed lids under its tested conditions. That supports the household-toilet finding, but it does not establish that every toilet, room, or ventilation system behaves identically.
Comparing the findings without mixing them up
| Evidence | Outcome measured | Organism or material | What the result supports |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 household-toilet study | Viral contamination on restroom surfaces | MS2 bacteriophage surrogate | No measured surface-contamination difference by lid position in that experiment |
| 2024 public-toilet experiment | Bioaerosol concentration | Bioaerosols under the study’s test conditions | No significant lid-position effect in that setup |
| CDC-hosted literature review | Evidence about aerosols and possible transmission | Studies reviewed through the review period | Transmission by toilet plumes was neither clearly proven nor ruled out |
Surface contamination, aerosol concentration, and proven infection are different endpoints. A result for one cannot be treated as a result for the others.

Does closing the lid reduce germs?
Not in the 2024 household-toilet experiment’s surface measurements. Closing the lid may still be a reasonable personal preference, but the cited evidence does not justify saying it prevents disease or reliably blocks toilet aerosols.
What cleaning changed in the study
The researchers also tested cleaning the toilet bowl. Bowl-water contamination fell by more than 4 log10—more than 99.99%—after cleaning with a toilet bowl brush, with or without a commercial cleaning product. This is a result for the tested cleaning intervention, not proof that a particular retail brand prevents infection.

The experiment reported an average of more than 107 plaque-forming units per 100 cm2 on toilet-seat bottoms after flushing inoculated toilets. That number describes the deliberately contaminated experimental setup and should not be treated as a typical household exposure.
A practical approach at home
- Flush according to normal household use; the cited study found no surface-contamination advantage for either lid position.
- Clean the bowl and nearby high-touch surfaces regularly, following the cleaner’s label and contact-time directions.
- Use a toilet bowl brush when cleaning the bowl; the study’s large reduction followed brushing, with or without a commercial product.
- Wash hands after using the toilet and after cleaning, since hand hygiene addresses many routes of bathroom contamination.
- Keep the bathroom ventilated where practical, especially during and after cleaning.
Bottom line for the lid question
If you are asking whether the 2024 study found less restroom-surface viral contamination when the lid was closed, the answer is no. In that experiment, contamination did not depend on lid position. Because the work used an MS2 surrogate and measured surfaces rather than human infections, it cannot establish that flushing poses no health risk or that lid position never affects aerosols in other toilets and rooms.
