Air-dry eucalyptus by hanging small, loose bundles upside down in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, low-light room for about one to three weeks. If you want flexible foliage instead of crisp stems, preserve mature branches in a glycerin-and-water solution for roughly two to six weeks; the leaves usually turn brown, but they remain pliable.

Both methods work by removing or replacing moisture slowly. University of Florida IFAS Extension explains that the aim is to remove moisture gradually while preserving as much of the original shape and texture as possible.
How to air-dry eucalyptus
1. Prepare fresh stems
Choose healthy, undamaged eucalyptus. Strip off leaves that would be trapped inside a bundle or sit below the point where the stems will be tied. Removing crowded foliage improves airflow and reduces the chance of damp spots.
2. Make small, loose bundles
Group only a few stems and fasten them near the cut ends with a rubber band or twist tie. Keep the bundle loose rather than tightly packed; air must move between the leaves. Individual stems can also be suspended from a rack.

5. Store the finished stems
Move completely dry eucalyptus away from humidity. Do not wash dusty foliage. Instead, use gentle, cool air to blow dust away without reintroducing moisture.

How to preserve flexible eucalyptus with glycerin
1. Select and cut mature branches
Use mature, healthy branches and cut them to about 18–24 inches when practical. Mississippi State University Extension reports that this length gives good results for many varieties.
2. Improve uptake at the stem base
Recut each stem and lightly split or smash the bottom. Oklahoma State University Extension documents this preparation as a way to help the solution enter the stem.
3. Mix the preserving solution
Start with one part vegetable glycerin to two parts water. Mississippi State University Extension also describes glycerin solutions of approximately 30–50%, so the exact concentration can vary with the material and conditions.

Timing varies with species, branch size and room conditions. Check periodically that solution remains available and that the foliage is changing evenly.

When the branches have taken up the solution, remove them, rinse off oily residue, pat them dry and let them air-dry with good circulation. Glycerin’s advantage is flexibility, not color retention: expect leaves to become brown or to change color.

Ways to use dried eucalyptus indoors
Vase stems
Place a few stems in a clean, dry vase for the simplest display. This arrangement is easy to adjust or replace and works with either air-dried or glycerin-treated foliage.
Bouquets
Combine eucalyptus with other dried foliage and secure the stems mechanically so the arrangement does not loosen as the material dries. Air-dried stems provide structure; glycerin-treated stems can supply softer, bendable leaves.
Wreaths
Attach stems around a wreath form with floral wire or another firm mechanical fastener. Keep the foliage fully dry before hanging and avoid placing the wreath where condensation can collect.

Garlands and wall pieces
Use completely dry material for garlands and wall arrangements. Support longer pieces at several points and keep them away from damp walls, windows that fog and other sources of condensation.
Safety and ongoing care
- Maintain air circulation while eucalyptus dries to limit mold.
- Do not use an oven or electric heater to accelerate air drying. University of Florida IFAS Extension warns that doing so can be dangerous.
- Wear gloves when handling eucalyptus branches. UC Davis advises gloves because the branches can be sticky.
- Keep preserved stems dry after installation. Washing can damage the foliage and add moisture; clean with gentle, cool air instead.
Common problems and practical fixes
The bundle develops a musty smell or visible mold
Separate the stems and move them to a drier, better-ventilated area. Crowded bundles and trapped humidity are common contributors. Discard material that remains visibly moldy rather than placing it in a finished arrangement.
Leaves remain soft after the air-drying window
Leave the stems hanging longer and improve circulation. Thick foliage and humid rooms can extend the one-to-three-week range.
Glycerin-treated leaves are brown
Brown coloration is a normal trade-off of glycerin preservation. The process is intended to maintain pliability, not the fresh green color.

Stems stop taking up glycerin
Check that every cut end is still submerged and that solution has not run low. Recutting and lightly splitting the base can improve uptake, but the treatment may still take several weeks depending on the branch.
