For a solid-wood tabletop, choose a fastener that holds the top to its base while still letting the wood expand and contract across the grain as humidity changes. Four practical options are Z-shape clips, shop-made wooden blocks or buttons, slotted stretchers, and figure-eight connectors. The right choice depends on the apron design, the tools you have, and how visible you want the attachment to be.
Why a solid-wood tabletop needs room to move
Solid wood changes width across the grain as moisture levels rise and fall. If screws lock a tabletop rigidly to its base, seasonal movement can contribute to cracks as the top shrinks or joint failure as it expands. Woodcraft explains the movement concern and recommends an attachment that accommodates it: Woodcraft’s tabletop attachment guidance.
These methods are for solid-wood tops. The movement plan depends on the top’s construction, grain direction, dimensions, and environment, so no single screw pattern is safe for every table. Orient the attachment to allow movement across the grain rather than clamping the top immovably to the base.
Compare the four attachment methods
| Method | Base preparation | What moves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Z-shape clips | A kerf in the apron sized and positioned for the clip | The clip can shift in the kerf as the top moves | Quick installation when an apron groove is practical |
| Shop-made blocks or buttons | A groove in the apron to receive each block’s tongue | The wooden tongue rides in the groove | A wood-on-wood attachment that suits period-style furniture or available scrapwood |
| Slotted stretchers | Stretchers between the long apron pieces, with a central hole and slots toward both ends | Screws through the slots can move as the top changes width | A frame that can incorporate stretchers, which may also help limit top warping and apron bowing |
| Figure-eight connectors | Shallow mortises in the apron ends | The connector pivots in its mortise | A discreet attachment when you want to avoid a long groove in the apron |
The methods and their trade-offs are described in WOOD Magazine’s four-method guide and its complementary tabletop-attachment guide.

#1 Best Overall
- Quality Material:These table top fasteners and screws are made of stainless steels,no rust and stronger and more sturdy than ordinary materials. Smooth surface without burrs
- Detailed Size: The length and width of a single clip are 1*1 inches, and the thickness is about 0.08 inches. The long holes are 3/16" wide and 1/2" long, the screws are #6 x 0.6 in
- Wide Range of Applications:Used these corner brackets to install a wood top on a wood base for the table, the slots allow for movement of the wood as it expands and contracts, thus preventing the tabletop from cracking or warping
- Ample Amount:You will receive 20 pieces of l brackets with 60 pcs screws, which are enough for you to deal with your woodworking projects
- Easy to Assemble:Figure 8 fastener is easy to use.The installation is completed by first locating the wood, then drilling the holes and finally securing them with screws and clips
1. Z-shape clips
A Z-clip has one end screwed to the underside of the tabletop and the other seated in a kerf cut into the apron. The clip can slide in the kerf as the top moves. This is a quick, convenient choice if the apron can accept a groove at the correct height.
Fit the kerf to the clip
Measure the clip and position the kerf to match its height; a misplaced groove can prevent the clip from seating properly. WOOD Magazine recommends drilling tabletop pilot holes with a depth stop so the bit does not break through the top. Its December 18, 2024 guide described the clips as costing “less than a dime apiece”; that is a dated statement, not a current price.

- High quality: Made of extra heavy duty metal and zinc plated, Fasteners are sturdy and of good quality steel, durable and long-lasting, provide a solid connection while still allowing for changes to the material of the table due to seasonal .temperature and humidity changes
- Easy to install: these clips are easy to install and use. The table clips slip neatly into a groove in the apron and attach to the tabletop with a single screw, simple, efficient and strong.
- Multipurpose: Great for securing all sorts of table tops, end tables, desktops, shelving and more.
- Size:Each table top fastener measures 1.1”(29mm) length and 0.6”(16mm) width. The screws are 14mm (0.55inch) long.
- Sufficient Quantity: This link contains 40 clips and comes with screws to function as needed. The thoughtful combination will fully meet your daily needs.
Metal clips may be less suitable for a traditional design where visible or modern-looking hardware would detract from the table. Relevant hardware includes Osborne’s Z-clip tabletop fasteners.
2. Shop-made blocks or wooden buttons
These wooden attachments work on the same basic principle as Z-clips. A tongue on each block or button fits into a groove in the apron, while a screw fastens the block to the underside of the tabletop. The tongue can move in the groove as the top changes width.

- Material: Crafted from alloy steel, these figure 8 fasteners resist corrosion and wear, ensuring years of reliable performance even in humid environments
- Installation: Simply drill holes and secure with screws, don't over-tighten them. The figure-8 design pivots naturally to accommodate wood expansion/contraction, preventing splits and cracks
- Application: Install internally or externally on tabletops, cabinets, drawers, and shelves. Suitable for DIY enthusiasts, carpenters, and anyone who repairs home furniture
- Design: Featuring a figure-8 shape, these fasteners blend into furniture while providing robust support
Blocks can be made from scrapwood and may suit period furniture better than metal clips. The trade-off is extra fabrication: each block needs a tongue that matches the apron groove. WOOD’s complementary guide calls a related version “wood buttons”; Woodcraft also discusses wooden buttons as a movement-accommodating attachment.
3. Slotted stretchers
Install stretchers between the long apron pieces. Each stretcher has a central screw hole and expansion slots toward both ends. A screw through the center locates the assembly; screws through the end slots secure it while retaining room for movement.

Do not tighten the end screws so far that they defeat the slots’ purpose. Stretchers add machining and frame components, but they can also help limit tabletop warping and apron bowing. This method makes sense when the table design can accommodate stretchers rather than when a simple clip or block is easier to fit.

Figure-eight connectors sit in shallow mortises at the apron ends. One side is screwed to the apron and the other to the tabletop; the connector pivots as the top moves. They avoid a long apron groove and are relatively discreet, but require mortising and enough apron thickness for the connector.

Allow the connector to pivot
WOOD Magazine’s described method uses shallow mortises with clearance for the connector to rotate, spaces connectors 12–18 inches apart, and calls for tabletop pilot holes drilled with a depth stop. That spacing is a guide for the construction it describes, not a universal specification. WOOD also says not to mount these connectors on the side apron pieces in that design.
Osborne’s instructions call for a Forstner bit to make the mortise and say the fastener screws should not sit proud of the connector. They also caution against overtightening: “Please note: we do not recommend making these screws too tight so that wood movement over time is possible.” See Osborne’s figure-eight fastener instructions.
Choose the method that suits the base
- Choose Z-clips when you can cut a correctly positioned kerf in the apron and want a quick hardware-based attachment.
- Choose blocks or buttons when a wooden attachment better suits the design and you are willing to make matching grooved parts.
- Choose slotted stretchers when the frame can include stretchers and you want the movement allowance built into those members.
- Choose figure-eight connectors when you want to avoid an apron groove and can mortise the apron ends while preserving pivot clearance.
Before fastening the top, confirm the grain direction and how the selected attachment will move across it. For any method, pilot holes and controlled drilling depth reduce the risk of damaging the finished top; for slotted or pivoting hardware, overtightening can eliminate the movement the design is meant to allow.
