A mid-range table saw is the practical middle ground between a portable benchtop machine and a full cabinet saw: it delivers a cast-iron table, roughly 30–36 inches of rip capacity and enough power for thick hardwood, usually from a 110-volt circuit. For a home workshop, choose by fence accuracy, safety-system priorities, dust control, electrical service and total ownership cost—not motor horsepower alone. SawStop’s PCS175-TGP236 led WOOD magazine’s February 26, 2025 test for overall performance and active injury mitigation; Delta’s 36-725T2 was the test’s low-price value pick.
What counts as a mid-range table saw?
WOOD magazine’s February 26, 2025 test defines this class as saws built to stand on legs or in a cabinet, prewired for 110 volts (with some convertible to 220 volts), equipped with a cast-iron table and approximately 30–36 inches of rip capacity. The tested machines used motors rated at 1-1/2 horsepower or more, heavy tabletops, built-in stands and substantial rip fences.
That definition separates these saws from lightweight benchtop models without making a 220-volt cabinet saw mandatory. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in a 2023 supplemental proposed-rule document, describes contractor saws more broadly as 10-inch, belt-driven induction-motor machines weighing about 200–400 pounds and costing roughly $599–$2,000. It describes cabinet saws as generally 10-inch, 220–240-volt machines with 1.75–5 horsepower or more, weighing about 300–1,000 pounds and costing approximately $1,399–$5,000. Those ranges are market context, not a universal definition of “mid-range.”
What performance should you expect?
Power for thick stock
Every saw in the cited test ripped 1-3/4-inch-thick red oak with a new rip blade without stalling, overloading or tripping a breaker. Feed rates were slower than on more powerful cabinet saws, so expect reliable capacity rather than production-line speed. A sharp, appropriate blade and a steady feed matter as much as the nameplate horsepower.

Electrical service and footprint
Most machines in this category run from 110 volts, making them suitable for a typical home-garage circuit; models that can be rewired for 220 volts give you an upgrade path if your shop wiring changes. Confirm the manufacturer’s circuit requirements, leave room for the 30–36-inch rip range and provide outfeed support before installation.
Features that determine daily usability
Rip fence and scale
A fence that glides smoothly and locks firmly at both ends is more valuable than a larger horsepower number. In the WOOD test, T-square fences deflected no more than 0.011 inch—described by the testers as virtually undetectable in finished wood. Delta 36-725T2, Ridgid R4512, Rikon 10-205 and SawStop CNS175-SFA30 used two-end-locking fences. Ridgid’s auxiliary fence can be positioned on either side for narrow or thin rips, although its scale was harder to read reliably. Rikon’s scale increments were difficult to distinguish through its narrow view window.
Miter gauge
Most supplied gauges provide 90-degree and 45-degree stops. Delta 36-725T2, Grizzly G0771Z and Shop Fox W1837 add nine adjustable positive stops, useful when repeatedly setting common angles. Delta’s aluminum fence faces were difficult to keep perpendicular to each other, and its miter-bar setscrews required frequent readjustment. Powermatic PM1000’s gauge includes a fence with a flip-stop and an intuitive, readable scale, but excess play at its 90- and 45-degree stops made the testers unwilling to trust those settings without verification.

- Rack & Pinion Telescoping Fence System Make fence adjustments fast, smooth and accurate
- Patented material support, can be used for narrow rip cuts.
- 32-1/2" rip capacity easily cuts a variety of larger shelving and trim materials
- Onboard storage system provides easy access to the Blade Guard Assembly, fence, riving knife, miter gauge, wrenches, push stick, and cord wrap when not in use.
- Rolling stand designed for easy set up and breakdown with excellent stability of the portable table saw. Telescoping fence rails retract to create a small, portable package. Flip over ripping fence allows for narrow rip cuts
Guard, splitter and riving knife
Modern guards, splitters and riving knives are designed for easier removal and reinstallation, which makes it more realistic to use them for routine work. Full-kerf blades generally match the tested splitters and riving knives. A thin-kerf blade can bind if the knife is too thick; Powermatic offers an optional thin-kerf riving knife. Check the knife thickness against every blade you intend to use.
Dust collection
These saws shroud the lower blade and provide dust ports. Harvey and Laguna Fusion F1 add blade-guard-mounted ports, allowing collection above the table as well as below it. A suitable shop vacuum or dust collector, sealed hose connections and an unobstructed cabinet outlet are still necessary for good capture.
Throat plates and dado work
A narrow throat opening reduces chip drop and supports the cut close to the blade. SawStop’s standard 3/8-inch phenolic plate uses a lever lock and a 3/16-inch blade slot that functions essentially as a zero-clearance plate. Precut phenolic plates cited by WOOD cost $30–$50 each. Grizzly G0771Z and Shop Fox W1837 are noted for wide-opening dado throat-plate options; verify the permitted dado width and brake or guard requirements before buying a dado set.

Is SawStop safety worth prioritizing?
What the system does
SawStop describes its sequence as detect, stop, drop and reset. A small electrical signal runs through the blade; contact with skin changes that signal; an aluminum brake enters the blade path; power is cut; and the blade’s angular momentum drives it below the table. SawStop says the process occurs in less than 5 milliseconds. Its safety materials quote Cody Simmons: “When something goes wrong, you simply can’t move faster than a spinning blade.”
WOOD magazine’s independent description says the system uses a safe, low-voltage current and drives an aluminum brake pawl into the blade when a finger or other highly conductive material makes contact. After activation, the magazine reports replacing both the brake cartridge and the blade: an 10-inch cartridge was cited at $80 and an 8-inch dado cartridge at $100.
Why any guard and riving knife still matter
Active detection is an additional layer, not a substitute for a guard, riving knife, push stick, sound stock support and disciplined feeding. The CPSC’s 2017 special study, reported in its 2023 supplemental proposed-rule document, estimated 26,500 U.S. emergency-department injuries from table-saw blade contact: 25,600 finger injuries (96.4%), 16,100 lacerations (60.9%), 5,500 fractures (20.6%) and 2,800 amputations (10.7%).

How much should you budget?
| Expense | Evidence-based figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Entry mid-range example | Delta 36-725T2: $600 in WOOD magazine’s test | A dated test price, not a guaranteed current retail price |
| Premium SawStop configuration | $2,868 in the test with 36-inch T-Glide fence and integrated mobile base | Includes the convenience features tested; availability and current pricing can change |
| Lower SawStop configuration | $2,450 in the test with basic rip fence and no mobile base | Shows the cost difference for a simpler configuration |
| Zero-clearance phenolic insert | $30–$50 each in the cited article | Plan for separate inserts for different blade or dado setups |
| SawStop replacement brake | $80 for a 10-inch cartridge; $100 for an 8-inch dado cartridge | One-time replacement figures reported after activation, in addition to a replacement blade |
Also price a mobile base if the saw must move, a quality rip blade, dado accessories, dust hose and electrical work. A low purchase price can lose its advantage if the fence, insert system or mobility hardware needs immediate replacement.

Choose a value-oriented contractor-style saw
Delta 36-725T2 fits a buyer who wants the lowest documented test price and nine-position miter adjustment, and who is willing to tune the miter fence and setscrews. Ridgid R4512 is attractive when a two-end-locking fence and reversible auxiliary fence matter more than scale readability.
Choose a feature-rich hybrid-style saw
Grizzly G0771Z or Shop Fox W1837 make sense when adjustable miter stops and dado throat-plate options are priorities. Powermatic PM1000 suits a shop that values a readable scale and flip-stop but is prepared to verify miter angles rather than rely on the supplied stops.

Choose SawStop for active injury mitigation
SawStop PCS175-TGP236 is the premium choice for buyers who place the tested combination of fit, fence performance, dust handling, alignment access and flesh-detection technology above the lowest initial price. Include cartridge and blade replacement in the ownership budget.
Choose around dust and cleanup
Laguna Fusion F1, Harvey models discussed in the test, and any saw paired with a sealed lower shroud and effective collector are worth closer consideration when indoor dust exposure is a major concern. Above-blade ports can capture dust that a cabinet port alone misses.
Quick Recap
Pre-purchase and setup checklist
- Measure the available footprint, outfeed path and storage area, then confirm that the saw’s rip capacity will not force the fence or workpiece into a wall.
- Verify voltage, amperage and whether the motor is factory-configurable for 220 volts; do not assume a rewiring option applies to every model.
- Lock and unlock the fence repeatedly across its full travel. Check that both ends stay aligned and that the scale remains readable from your normal operating position.
- Test the miter gauge at 90 and 45 degrees, then inspect the bar for play. If repeatable angles matter, count the available adjustable stops.
- Match each blade’s kerf to the supplied riving knife or splitter. Stop using a combination that binds.
- Confirm the guard and knife can be removed and reinstalled without tools or awkward disassembly, and keep them fitted for cuts where they are appropriate.
- Check the lower port, blade-guard port and hose sizes against your dust collector; seal leaks before judging collection performance.
- Buy or make the correct throat plate for your blade and dado configurations, observing the manufacturer’s approved dado limits.
- Support long stock with an outfeed table or roller system, and use push devices for narrow cuts instead of reaching near the blade.
- After assembly, align the blade to the miter slot and fence, verify the riving-knife position and make a test cut in scrap before cutting project stock.
