Don’t wait for a fixed “last mow” date or scalp the turf to make it shorter for winter. If you lower the height, do it gradually and follow guidance for your grass type and region. Before snow covers the lawn, mulch thin, dry leaves into small pieces or remove heavier leaf cover.
When should you stop mowing your lawn in fall?
Let growth—not a calendar date—determine the last mow. Continue mowing as needed while the grass is actively growing, and stop when it no longer needs cutting. Weather and growth timing vary by region, so a date that works in one state may not fit another.
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes that Kentucky bluegrass foliage stops growing when daytime highs are consistently below 50°F. That is a regional cue in its guidance for Kentucky bluegrass, not a universal threshold for every lawn or location. University of Wisconsin–Madison Division of Extension likewise advises continuing to mow until growth ceases.
What mowing height should you keep before winter?
There is no single final height recommended by every extension service. The advice differs by region, and should be read in light of your grass type, local conditions, current mowing height, and whether the lawn has become unusually tall.

| Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, page last reviewed August 2024 | For a typical 3.0–3.5-inch mowing height, lower to 2.5–3 inches in mid- to late September. |
| University of Minnesota Turfgrass Science, publication date not shown | Generally keep the usual fall height. A standard 2.5–3-inch lawn may remain there; if the lawn is over 3 inches and you lower it, bring it to 3 inches. |
| University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension, publication date not shown | Recommends a shorter final setting of 2–2.5 inches. |
These are not interchangeable rules for every lawn: they show why local university extension advice and the grass species matter. If your lawn is already at a normal height and is not excessively tall, avoid making a drastic cut just because winter is approaching. Wisconsin Extension also cautions against an excessively short final mow.
Lower height gradually, not in one severe cut
Iowa State Extension says not to remove more than one-third of the leaf area in a single mowing. Cutting off more at once can stress the grass. Minnesota Extension similarly warns against cutting too short and recommends making any height reduction over several mowings. If the lawn has grown tall, reduce it in stages rather than trying to reach a target in one pass.

How should you handle leaves before snow?
Don’t leave a thick blanket of leaves on the lawn going into winter. Leaves that block light can contribute to dieback, while deeply piled leaves can smother grass or promote disease. The aim is to have little visible leaf debris left on the turf before snow cover.
Mulch thin, dry layers
If leaves are thin and dry, mow over them often enough to chop them into small pieces that fall between the grass blades. A mower with a mulching function can help, but buying one is not required; Iowa State Extension also describes collecting leaves with a mower bag, raking, or blowing them away.

Remove thick or persistent cover
Thick or wet leaves may not chop finely or drop through the grass. Rake, blow, collect, or manage them in repeated passes rather than leaving a dense layer. Check the lawn afterward and clear visible piles or remaining heavy cover before snow arrives.

Yes. Bermuda, centipede, and zoysia are warm-season grasses, so don’t apply cool-season recommendations automatically. University of Georgia Extension, Forsyth County, gives a normal 1–2-inch mowing range for these grasses and advises allowing them to enter dormancy. Its late-season care guidance also differs from cool-season calendars. Check local extension recommendations for your species and area rather than using the cool-season height comparisons above as a prescription.
