A detached or shifted speaker magnet is sometimes repairable, but it is rarely a matter of applying glue from the outside. The magnet, pole piece, and top plate must be returned to precise alignment with the voice-coil gap. If the coil has scraped, overheated, or deformed, the driver may also need a recone or replacement voice coil. Disconnect the speaker, diagnose the fault, and compare repair cost with the driver’s value before doing anything else.
What may have failed
“Detached magnet” can describe several different problems, and they do not share the same repair.
Shifted magnet or motor assembly
The ceramic or neodymium motor has moved relative to the basket, top plate, or pole piece. Common symptoms are scraping, buzzing, distortion, reduced output, or a cone that will not move freely.
Separated top plate or pole piece
The visible magnet may still look attached while the top plate or pole has shifted. Because these parts define the narrow magnetic gap, this is a precision motor repair, not a cosmetic glue job.

Basket-to-motor separation
The frame may have loosened from the rear motor assembly. The cone and coil might initially appear intact, but alignment can still be lost.
Another fault mistaken for a magnet problem
A burned or open voice coil, loose spider, damaged surround, broken tinsel lead, loose dust cap, cabinet rattle, crossover fault, or wiring problem can create similar symptoms.
Driver type matters
The procedure below is aimed at conventional cone drivers such as woofers and many guitar or midrange speakers. Tweeters and compression drivers often use replaceable diaphragms and require model-specific service rather than a conventional woofer recone.
Safety and diagnosis
1. Stop powering the driver
Disconnect the speaker from its amplifier before inspection. Do not continue playing test tones at normal power: a misaligned coil can scrape, overheat, and deform further. Strong magnets can attract tools and loose metal, and shifting parts can pinch fingers.

- Slow drying: compare with fast drying glue, FIXWANT Speaker Glue is a slow dry glue which take 4-6 minutes for surface to dry which ensure you have enough time to stick the parts and can correct it within this period.
- Durability and Firmly: FIXWANT Speaker Glue is soft glue which can be stretched to its own length of 900% which can ensure effectively bonding with the expansion of the material with the surface, improve the durability of the load bearing structure, with this performance it is anti-vibration and is good for loud speaker purpose.
- Anti-clogging Cap & Ultra Fine Tips: FIXWANT Speaker Glue is a nozzle design which can help to prevents clogging, and the cap has a tip in it to extend craft glue shelf life and can be used at any time. The ultra-fine tip allows small Industrial adhesive drops for fine, precise, controlled and mess-free applications which can help us do our job better.
- Easy to use: Prepare the speaker that needs to be repaired, apply the glue to the place that needs to be bonded, preferably on both sides then wait for about 2 minutes before bonding. Press the position with hands or clips or heavy objects for 10-20 minutes and wait for 48 hours you can use it.
- Wide range: It can also stick many more materials: Metal, Wood, Fabric, Ceramic, Most Plastics, Toy Flowers, Jewelry, PP, PE, PVC, Electronic Accessories, Paper, Mobile Phone Housing, Leather, Handcrafts & much more.
2. Remove the driver carefully
- Remove the grille and mounting screws.
- Photograph and label the wiring and polarity.
- Lift the driver without pulling on the tinsel leads.
- Disconnect it from the amplifier and, where practical, from the crossover.
3. Test cone movement
With several fingertips spread evenly around the dust-cap area, press the cone inward gently. Do not push from one side or force it past a hard stop. Scraping, grinding, asymmetric travel, a partial stop, or a sudden transition from free movement to rubbing indicates a mechanical problem. Look for a gap between basket and motor, and see whether the magnet or plate moves when lightly touched.
4. Check electrical resistance
Measure across the disconnected speaker terminals with a multimeter. Compare the reading with the manufacturer’s nominal impedance or an identical working driver; there is no universal “good” resistance number.
- Open circuit: possible broken tinsel lead, terminal, voice-coil wire, or burned coil.
- Near-zero resistance: possible shorted coil or wiring fault.
- Plausible resistance but scraping: the coil may still be bent, overheated, or misaligned.
- Normal-looking resistance: does not prove the driver is mechanically healthy.
5. Rule out the cabinet and wiring
Check mounting screws, gasket, grille, dust cap, cabinet panels, port tubes, crossover components, solder joints, internal wiring, surround, and spider. A short, low-level test is acceptable only after the mechanical inspection; never drive a scraping cone loudly.
Should you repair or replace it?
| Situation | Usually the better path |
|---|---|
| Cheap, common modern driver | Replace it with a correctly matched driver. |
| Rare, vintage, discontinued, or custom driver | Obtain a specialist diagnosis before buying parts. |
| Known model with an available manufacturer-specific recone kit | Advanced DIY or authorized recone service may be practical. |
| Cracked magnet, bent basket, badly shifted pole, or severe coil damage | Professional estimate or replacement; a recone alone will not correct the motor. |
| Tweeter or compression driver | Use the model’s diaphragm procedure or professional service. |
Human Speakers describes shifted magnet structures as generally unrepairable in ordinary service, while noting that specialized disassembly and realignment can restore some ceramic-magnet drivers. The company characterizes that work as expensive and uncommon: Human Speakers service information.

What an advanced repair involves
This is an advanced procedure for a conventional cone driver, not a guaranteed household fix. Do not attempt it on a valuable driver unless you can maintain precise alignment throughout adhesive curing.
Equipment
- Correct screwdrivers and nut drivers, eye protection, and gloves.
- Multimeter and nonmagnetic or magnetically safe tools where practical.
- Thin voice-coil alignment shims or a purpose-built spacer and fixture.
- Masking or gap-cleaning tape, scrapers, and suitable abrasive material.
- The exact recone or repair parts for the driver.
- Adhesive specified by the repair-kit or driver manufacturer.
- Clamps or an alignment fixture, plus cautiously used clean compressed air.
Speaker Exchange instructions emphasize removing debris from the frame and magnet, protecting the gap, and cleaning it with adhesive tape on a shim: recone instructions (PDF).
Procedure
- Identify the exact driver. Record brand, model, impedance, diameter, serial number, and application. Photograph the basket and motor, and verify that replacement parts exist.
- Disassemble only as far as necessary. A rubbing coil generally requires removal of the cone, spider, surround, and often dust cap. Disconnect tinsel leads carefully, then protect the magnetic gap immediately.
- Strip old adhesive and contamination. Clean mating surfaces without allowing filings, steel fragments, abrasive dust, or adhesive into the gap. Use tape or another approved collection method.
- Assess the motor. Stop if the ceramic magnet is cracked, the basket is warped, or the pole and top plate cannot be returned to stable alignment. A recone replaces moving parts; it does not automatically repair a damaged motor.
- Establish an alignment reference. Use original geometry, manufacturer instructions, a proper spacer, or a purpose-built fixture. Visual centering is not sufficient, and improvised business-card shims are not a precision standard.
- Reposition the motor structure. Align basket, magnet, pole, and top plate concentrically. Keep fingers clear of magnetically attracted parts.
- Apply the specified adhesive. Do not assume super glue, hot glue, construction adhesive, or generic five-minute epoxy is suitable. The correct product depends on the joint and the driver procedure.
- Hold alignment for the full cure. Follow the adhesive and kit instructions, not merely the initial set time. A JBL procedure specifies 24 hours before spacer removal and testing, but that is model-specific: JBL recone procedure (PDF).
- Recone damaged moving parts. If the coil rubbed, overheated, or distorted, replace the affected cone, voice coil, spider, surround, dust cap, gasket, and lead wires as required by the kit. Reconing replaces soft and moving parts; it does not by itself realign a shifted motor. See Speaker Exchange reconing FAQs.
- Inspect before power. Move the cone evenly, check for rubbing, measure continuity again, and verify that the motor and basket are rigid and that no adhesive entered the gap.
- Test at low power. Listen for rubbing, buzzes, distortion, weak output, and abnormal heating. Increase power gradually only if all checks remain normal.
Why a simple glue repair fails
- Misalignment: Bond strength cannot compensate for a pole or top plate that is off-center.
- Hidden coil damage: A repaired magnet cannot restore a burned, bent, or scraped voice coil.
- Wrong adhesive: Heat, vibration, substrates, and joint loads vary by driver.
- Contamination: A single metal fragment in the gap can cause permanent scraping.
- Premature testing: Moving the assembly or applying power before full cure can break the new bond.
- Structural damage: A bent basket or cracked magnet can make stable alignment impossible.
When professional service is the sensible choice
Use a specialist when the driver is valuable, rare, large, difficult to align, or lacks readily available parts. Ask what will be diagnosed, whether the motor will be demagnetized and realigned, which moving parts will be replaced, how the gap will be cleaned, what testing is included, the turnaround, shipping responsibility, warranty, and the total estimate if extra damage is found.

Weber Speakers says its recone service can include demagnetizing, cleaning, remagnetizing, soft-part replacement, terminal repair, and testing. Its page says loose-magnet or shifted-pole work may be possible in some cases, while also stating that it cannot generally perform magnet repairs; it lists a five-to-six-week recone turnaround at the time crawled: Weber recone services.
For unusual ceramic-magnet or vintage drivers, Human Speakers may be a specialist lead, but its own warning that this work is expensive and uncommon makes it unsuitable for most commodity drivers.

Do not select a replacement by diameter alone. Match the following as closely as practical:
- Nominal impedance and sensitivity.
- Power handling and usable frequency range.
- Cutout diameter, mounting-hole pattern, basket depth, and magnet clearance.
- Thiele/Small parameters for sealed or ported cabinets.
- Crossover requirements, polarity, and wiring.
- Performance within a stereo pair or multi-driver system.

Troubleshooting after repair
The magnet moves again
Stop using the driver. Possible causes include dirty mating surfaces, unsuitable adhesive, incomplete cure, mechanical stress from a bent basket, or movement during curing. Remove failed adhesive completely, inspect for cracks and deformation, and reassess professional repair or replacement.
The cone still scrapes
The motor may remain off-center; the pole, top plate, basket, or coil may be damaged; shims may have been removed early; or debris may remain in the gap. A recone alone will not fix a misaligned motor.
Continuity is present but output is weak
Check partial coil damage, polarity, rubbing, magnet strength, crossover and amplifier operation, and whether the replacement parts are correct. Compare the driver outside the cabinet at low level with its matching driver.
The speaker is silent
Check terminal and tinsel-lead continuity, voice-coil resistance, crossover protection, amplifier channel, internal wiring, and whether the coil is completely open.
Metal entered the gap
Do not probe with a steel screwdriver. Cover the gap while cleaning and use an approved tape-and-shim method, or have the motor professionally serviced. Thorough gap cleaning is specifically required in Speaker Exchange recone instructions: recone instructions (PDF).
Bottom line
Diagnose before gluing. A shifted motor can sometimes be restored, but only with controlled disassembly, gap protection, concentric alignment, the correct adhesive, full curing, and post-repair testing. Replace a cheap, common driver when a matched unit costs less than repair. For rare or discontinued speakers, stop after diagnosis and obtain a specialist estimate before risking the original.
