If your Hisense TV is silent, first separate a TV-speaker problem from an external-device problem. Press Mute, raise volume, disconnect soundbars and headphones, choose TV Speaker, and test a built-in app. If the TV speakers work, troubleshoot the HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, or source device rather than resetting the television.
Start with a two-minute sound test
- Press Mute once and press Volume Up several times. Check the volume on your cable box, streaming player, console, soundbar, or receiver too.
- Turn off or disconnect the soundbar, receiver, optical device, Bluetooth speaker, and wired headphones.
- Open the audio settings and select TV Speaker.
- Play a built-in streaming app, live channel, or another known-good source.
- Try the TV’s physical buttons if possible. This rules out a defective remote.
- Test a second source, such as another HDMI input or a different app.
The result identifies the branch to follow: one silent app points to that app; one silent HDMI device points to its settings or connection; silent built-in apps and TV speakers point to the television’s audio settings, software, or hardware.
If the built-in TV speakers are silent
Choose the internal speakers
Menu names vary among Google TV, Android TV, VIDAA, Roku TV, Fire TV, and older models. On representative Google TV sets, try Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output → TV Speaker. On VIDAA, look under Settings → Sound → Audio Output Settings → Audio Output. Disconnecting an external device may be necessary before TV Speaker becomes available. Hisense manuals list TV Speaker, ARC, and Bluetooth as selectable outputs on representative models: 65A6G manual.
Reset audio settings, not the whole TV
Look for Settings → Display & Sound → Sound → Reset on Google TV/Android TV models, or Sound → Reset/Reset to Default on VIDAA. This restores sound preferences without deleting apps, accounts, channels, or network settings. Representative instructions appear in the 55A65H manual and this Hisense manual.

Restart and power-cycle
Use Settings → System → Restart where available. If the interface is unresponsive, turn off the TV, unplug it, disconnect HDMI and audio accessories, wait at least 60 seconds, reconnect power, and test with only TV Speaker. A representative restart path is documented in the U8H manual.
Check firmware by exact model
Find the model number and operating system on the TV label or in Settings, then use Hisense’s firmware page. Install only firmware listed for that exact model; a visually similar model is not a safe substitute. Product manuals and support pages are available at Hisense support.
If only an HDMI device has no sound
- Confirm the TV is on the correct HDMI input.
- Check mute and volume on the connected box, console, player, or stick.
- Restart that device and move it to another HDMI port.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable.
- Temporarily bypass an HDMI switch, splitter, receiver, or capture device.
- Set the source audio output to PCM, Stereo, or Auto.
Hisense manuals specifically recommend checking the input, changing HDMI ports, and trying another cable for external-source failures: 65U8G manual and 70A6H manual.
If a soundbar or receiver is silent
HDMI ARC/eARC
- Connect the cable to the TV port marked ARC or eARC/ARC, and to the soundbar/receiver’s ARC/eARC port.
- Power the external device and select its HDMI/ARC input.
- Set the TV’s Audio Output to ARC/eARC.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on both devices when required.
- If the bar supports ARC but not eARC, turn eARC off.
- Set digital audio to PCM or Auto.
- Turn both devices off, unplug them, reconnect the ARC cable, then restart the TV and soundbar.
ARC/eARC behavior is model- and device-dependent. A bar can respond to volume commands yet fail to decode the selected format. Hisense’s connection and CEC guidance is in this manual.
Optical (TOSLINK)
Select Optical as the output, remove protective caps, and choose PCM first. If you select Dolby Digital, verify that the receiver or soundbar supports it. Many optical setups require volume control from the external device. See Hisense guidance for optical connections and digital formats.
Digital-audio format
| Setting | Use while diagnosing |
|---|---|
| PCM | Broadest compatibility test; may reduce surround capability. |
| Auto | Lets the TV and device negotiate a supported format. |
| Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital Plus | Use only when every device in the chain supports it. |
| Pass Through/Bypass | Lets the receiver decode, but can expose incompatibilities. |
PCM is a fallback, not a guarantee of every multichannel or object-based format.
Bluetooth and headphones
Disconnect previously paired Bluetooth headphones or speakers, remove stale pairings if necessary, and return output to TV Speaker. Check volume on the Bluetooth device. Bluetooth support, independent volume behavior, and simultaneous speaker use vary by model and region; see the Hisense regional FAQ. A wired headset or audio-out connection can redirect or disable internal speakers; check Headphone Mode and the 55U6G manual.

If only one app, channel, or movie is silent
One app or title
- Play another title and test another app.
- Check the program’s audio track and language.
- Force-stop and reopen the app.
- Restart the TV, then update the app and TV software.
If only one title or service fails, the stream or app is more likely than the TV speakers. Hisense documents force-stopping and restarting apps in its Google TV instructions.
Surround content only
A Dolby, DTS, or other surround stream may exceed what the TV, streaming device, switch, receiver, or soundbar can decode. Try stereo or PCM. Roku also identifies unsupported surround formats as a cause of silence on particular content: Roku player audio support.
One channel only
Check the broadcast’s SAP or secondary-audio setting, language track, and signal. If other channels work, do not factory-reset the TV first.
Platform menu guide
| Platform | Representative path | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV/Android TV | Settings → Display & Sound → Audio Output | Choose TV Speaker, ARC/eARC, Optical, or Bluetooth. Sound reset may be under Sound → Reset. |
| VIDAA | Settings → Sound → Audio Output Settings → Audio Output | Labels and Bluetooth behavior vary by model and region. |
| Roku TV | Roku audio menus | Use Roku’s TV Ready soundbar guidance for ARC/CEC and input issues. |
| Older/non-smart models | Use the model manual’s Sound or Audio menu | Do not use hidden reset-button combinations from another model. |
Hisense manuals warn that functions and paths can change with model and software version. Use the manual for your exact television.
When the problem is probably hardware
Contact Hisense support when there is no sound from built-in apps, live TV, and HDMI sources after selecting TV Speaker, restarting, resetting audio settings, checking firmware, and disconnecting accessories. Persistent crackling, intermittent output, or one speaker that remains silent also warrants service. Gather the model and serial numbers, operating system, firmware version, failed sources, connection type, soundbar/receiver model, cable and port used, and whether PCM changed the result.
Factory reset is the last resort
Reset only after the isolation tests above. A factory reset can remove apps, accounts, network settings, channel scans, and personal preferences; apps must be downloaded again. Hisense provides model-specific reset guidance in its FAQ. Do not rely on a universal button combination or hidden service menu.
If TV speakers work but ARC/eARC does not, a known-good HDMI cable or optical connection is a sensible next test. If every source remains silent, buying a soundbar is not a repair—use Hisense support and check warranty eligibility.
