Yes—a standard 120-volt box fan can run from a battery, but not by connecting the battery directly to the fan. The simplest setup is a portable power station with a 120-volt AC outlet. For a custom system, use a correctly sized 12-volt battery and pure-sine-wave inverter. If maximum runtime matters more than keeping the same fan, a rechargeable DC or USB fan is usually more efficient because it avoids inverter losses.

Identify the fan’s actual electrical load

“20-inch box fan” is not a power rating. Motor size, speed setting and electronic controls differ by model. Find the voltage, amperage, wattage and model number on the label near the motor housing or plug, then check the manual. Holmes lists the HBF2010A-WM manual through its instruction-manuals page, but the search listing does not state that model’s wattage.

If the label gives only amps, estimate running power with watts ≈ volts × amps. For a U.S. fan, multiply the listed amps by 120. This is only an estimate: motor power factor and operating conditions affect actual input. Low, medium and high speeds can draw different amounts, and nameplate current may be a maximum or rated value rather than the measured load.

A plug-in watt meter is the most useful check. Measure the fan at the speed you expect to use and note that startup can briefly require more power than steady running.

Choose the battery-powered approach

Option Best for Advantages Drawbacks
Portable power station Most households, renters and outage use Enclosed battery, built-in inverter and protections; plug-and-play Inverter losses, battery aging and higher purchase cost
12-volt battery plus inverter Experienced DIY, RV or off-grid users Modular and potentially expandable Requires correct fuse, cables, charger, polarity and ventilation
Rechargeable DC/USB fan Longest runtime, camping and portable cooling No AC conversion; usually lighter and quieter May move less air and use a proprietary battery
Automotive battery plus inverter Emergency last resort only Widely available Designed for engine starting, not repeated deep discharge; can leave you unable to start the vehicle

Portable power station: the default choice

A power station combines a rechargeable battery, battery-management system, charger and inverter. Its rated AC output is the amount it can provide continuously; Jackery explains this distinction in its rated-power guidance. Choose a 120-volt AC outlet, a continuous rating above the fan’s running watts and enough surge capacity for motor startup.

12-volt battery and inverter

This can be a good modular solution when you already own a suitable deep-cycle battery. It is not a beginner project with loose lithium cells. You need a battery matched to the inverter, a manufacturer-specified fuse close to the positive terminal, correctly sized cables and terminals, a compatible charger, and a protected, ventilated installation.

Rechargeable DC or USB fan

When airflow requirements permit, a DC fan is often the best energy value. It avoids converting battery DC to AC and then back to the fan’s internal motor electronics. Confirm its charging and “run while charging” behavior with the manufacturer; those features are not universal.

Size the battery by watt-hours

Battery capacity is expressed in watt-hours (Wh), not merely volts. A 12-volt label does not tell you how long the battery will last. Use:

Estimated runtime (hours) ≈ battery Wh × usable efficiency ÷ fan watts

For planning, 0.8–0.9 is a reasonable efficiency range for a portable station. The examples below use 85%; they are estimates, not guarantees.

Fan load Estimated 8-hour battery need at 85% efficiency
40 W 376 Wh
60 W 565 Wh
80 W 753 Wh
100 W 941 Wh
Station and load Estimated runtime
240 Wh, 40-W fan About 5.1 hours
240 Wh, 60-W fan About 3.4 hours
500 Wh, 60-W fan About 7.1 hours
1,000 Wh, 80-W fan About 10.6 hours

Actual results vary with inverter idle draw, fan speed, temperature, battery age, low-battery reserve and other connected loads. Small loads can be surprisingly inefficient because the inverter’s own consumption becomes a larger percentage of the output; Jackery discusses this effect using a 36-watt fan example at this support page. Jackery’s capacity-selection guidance is at this page.

Size the inverter for running and starting power

The inverter must exceed continuous running watts and also tolerate the fan motor’s momentary startup demand. Conservative examples are:

  • A measured 40-W fan: at least 100 W continuous AC output is generally comfortable.
  • An 80-W fan: choose at least 150–200 W continuous output.
  • A 120-W fan: choose at least 250 W continuous output.

These are selection examples, not universal requirements. Compare the fan and inverter specifications or test the combination. A 100-W inverter may run a 40-W fan yet still shut down if its peak rating cannot start the motor.

Pure-sine-wave output is the preferred conservative choice, especially for fans with electronic controls, timers, remotes or displays. Some simple motors operate on modified sine wave, but buzzing, excess heat, unreliable starting or poor speed control are possible. If the inverter maker does not clearly approve motor loads, choose pure sine wave.

Battery chemistry and product selection

LiFePO₄ (LFP) stations generally offer long cycle life and good thermal stability; NMC lithium-ion products can be lighter or more compact; AGM and other lead-acid batteries are familiar but heavy and provide less practical capacity when deep discharge is avoided. Chemistry alone does not make a product safe. Cell design, battery-management system, charger, enclosure, condition and certification all matter.

Jackery describes LFP and NMC options and protections such as overcharge, over-discharge, overheating, overcurrent and short-circuit protection in its buying guide. Compare published continuous and surge output, usable Wh, pure-sine output, display, warranty, solar-input limits, idle consumption and expansion support. Official product information is available from Jackery and EcoFlow. A whole-home system, such as products listed at EcoFlow’s whole-home collection, is excessive for one fan and introduces installation and electrical-code issues.

Safe setup procedures

Portable power station

  1. Measure the fan’s wattage and select a station with a 120-volt AC outlet, adequate continuous output and surge margin.
  2. Fully charge the station and place it on a dry, stable, ventilated surface.
  3. Turn on the station’s AC output, then plug the fan directly into it.
  4. Start on low if the manufacturer recommends limiting startup demand, then select the desired speed.
  5. Watch output watts and remaining charge. Turn off the fan and AC inverter when finished to prevent idle drain.

12-volt battery and inverter

  1. Confirm the inverter accepts the battery voltage and has sufficient continuous and surge ratings.
  2. Install the manufacturer-specified fuse or circuit protection close to the battery’s positive terminal.
  3. Use correctly sized cables and secure terminals; verify polarity before energizing the inverter.
  4. Keep the battery and inverter dry, protected from shorts and ventilated as required by the battery design.
  5. Plug the fan into the inverter’s AC outlet and stop before the inverter reaches low-voltage cutoff.

Do not improvise a lithium charging circuit or connect an inverter to individual lithium cells without an engineered battery-management and protection system.

USB or DC fan

  1. Confirm the fan’s required voltage and connector.
  2. Use a power bank, DC battery system or charger that matches that specification.
  3. Do not use a passive USB-to-household-plug adapter: it changes the connector, not the voltage or waveform.

Charging while the fan runs

Pass-through charging and UPS operation are model-specific. Jackery documents pass-through precautions at this page and separate UPS precautions at this page. Verify whether your station keeps AC output active while charging, can transfer to battery during an outage, permits simultaneous solar charging and AC loads, and imposes restrictions on charge/discharge operation.

Safety rules that prevent common failures

  • Keep batteries and stations dry, unobstructed and away from combustible materials. Stop using a unit that is unusually hot, swollen, cracked, chemically odorous or repeatedly shutting down.
  • Plug the fan directly into the station when possible. If an extension cord is unavoidable, use one rated for the load, keep it fully uncoiled, dry and visible, and never daisy-chain cords or run them beneath rugs.
  • Never run a gasoline generator indoors, in a basement or in an attached garage. Carbon monoxide can be lethal.
  • An automotive battery can be drained below the level needed to start the vehicle. A deep-cycle AGM, LiFePO₄ system or finished power station is more appropriate.
  • Do not treat a fan as guaranteed medical or life-safety backup. Jackery excludes applications where interruption could cause injury or major property damage; see its guidance.

Troubleshoot runtime and startup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to do
Fan will not start Insufficient surge output, AC output off, overload, cold battery or incompatible controls Remove other loads, recharge, enable AC, start on low and try a higher-surge pure-sine inverter; confirm the fan works from a wall outlet
Runtime is shorter than estimated Higher actual wattage, inverter idle draw, high speed, cold or aged battery, or other loads Measure input watts and recalculate using 80–90% usable efficiency
Station shuts down near empty Low-voltage or low-state-of-charge protection Do not repeatedly force restarts; recharge according to the manufacturer’s instructions
Station overheats Blocked ventilation, high ambient temperature or fault Disconnect loads if safe, improve ventilation and follow the manufacturer’s emergency guidance; do not open a damaged lithium battery

Test the setup before an outage

  1. Fully charge the battery.
  2. Measure the fan at the intended speed with a watt meter.
  3. Run only the fan and record starting and ending state of charge.
  4. Repeat at low and high speed if both matter.
  5. Test under the temperature and ventilation conditions expected during use.

The displayed percentage is an estimate and can change with load and temperature. A measured test is more useful than dividing nominal Wh by fan watts.

Can a USB power bank run a normal box fan?

Not directly. A household box fan expects 120-volt AC. Use a power station, a properly matched inverter or a fan designed for USB/DC input.

How many watts does a box fan use?

There is no universal figure. Read the specific fan’s label or measure it with a plug-in watt meter; speed settings can change the load.

Is a rechargeable fan better than an AC box fan on battery power?

Often, yes, when its airflow is sufficient. A DC fan avoids inverter losses and can run longer from the same stored energy.

Is a portable power station safe indoors?

A battery station produces no combustion exhaust, but it still needs ventilation and protection from moisture, heat and damage. Combustion generators must remain outdoors.

The Bottom Line

For most people, use a properly sized pure-sine portable power station and plug the box fan directly into its AC outlet. Measure the fan rather than guessing its wattage, allow for startup surge and inverter losses, and choose battery capacity in watt-hours. If replacing the fan is acceptable, a rechargeable DC model is usually the most efficient option.
