The best indoor hanging plant depends on the light and care you can provide where it will hang. For easygoing trailing vines, start with pothos or heartleaf philodendron; for a basket that produces arching foliage and plantlets, consider a spider plant. A Boston fern makes a fuller display but needs consistently moist soil and more humidity. Other plants on this list suit elevated pots or shelves, but not all are equally suited to cascading baskets.

Choose a hanging plant by light, care, and growth habit

A ceiling hook or high shelf creates display space, but it does not improve the light reaching a plant. Check the actual spot throughout the day and match it to the plant’s needs. University of Illinois Extension groups houseplants by low, medium, and high light; its categories are useful starting points, not guarantees for every room or cultivar. If natural light is inadequate, supplemental plant lighting may help (Illinois Extension’s houseplant lighting guide).

Also distinguish a true trailing or arching basket plant from a foliage plant that can simply sit in an elevated container. The latter may look attractive on a high shelf, but the cited sources do not establish the same basket-specific care or growth habit for every candidate below.

Plant Light fit Watering or humidity burden Basket or trailing evidence Pet-safety listing Best match
Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) Low to moderate light; U.S. Botanic Garden also lists it for low light. Low: let soil dry moderately between waterings; the U.S. Botanic Garden lists low water needs. Forgiving trailing or climbing vine that can cascade from a container. ASPCA flags it for insoluble calcium oxalates; not a pet-safe default. Someone seeking a forgiving vine for a low- to moderate-light spot.
Heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) Low to indirect light. Moderate: water when topsoil is dry and avoid soggy soil. Trailing; suitable for a hanging basket or trellis. ASPCA identifies philodendron as a pet hazard if chewed or ingested. A trailing vine for a spot without strong direct light.
Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) Indirect light. Moderate: average moisture is a suitable starting point. Cascading stems and plantlets make it a clear hanging-basket choice. ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to dogs and cats. A cascading basket plant, especially for households checking listed pet toxicity.
Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata var. bostoniensis) Medium-bright indoor light. Higher: prefers consistently moist, not saturated, growing medium; dry indoor air can brown frond edges. Long, arching fronds suit a hanging basket. ASPCA lists it as non-toxic to dogs and cats. Someone able to keep the medium evenly moist and provide a more humid environment.
Inch plant / Tradescantia (Tradescantia zebrina) Medium light. Not stated in the cited Illinois Extension listing. Colorful foliage and trailing growth suit an elevated display. Not stated in the cited sources; check the exact plant before purchase. A medium-light spot where colorful trailing foliage is wanted.
Wax plant / Hoya (Hoya carnosa) High or bright light; UNH Extension also names Hoya among easy-care options for an east- or west-facing window. Not stated in the cited sources. Trailing candidate for a brighter hanging spot. Not stated in the cited sources; check the exact plant before purchase. A brighter location and a preference for a trailing plant.
Baby rubber plant (Peperomia obtusifolia) Medium light. Moderate: allow soil to dry moderately; overwatering can cause rot. Compact foliage suits a small hanging container or elevated shelf; not described here as a cascading basket plant. Not stated in the cited sources; check the exact plant before purchase. A compact foliage plant for a small container rather than long trailing growth.
Satin pothos (Scindapsus pictus) Confirm the cultivar’s needs before setting a care routine; Iowa State includes it among related foliage plants suited to similar environmental conditions. Not stated specifically for this plant in the cited source. Trailing, patterned foliage; basket-specific guidance is not established here. Not stated in the cited sources; check the exact plant before purchase. Someone drawn to patterned trailing foliage who can verify the cultivar’s requirements.

A supported elevated container for a foliage plant, rather than a verified trailing basket display.
Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorus ‘Sprengeri’) Medium light. Not stated in the cited Illinois Extension listing. Fine-textured foliage for elevated display; basket-specific guidance is not established here. Not stated in the cited sources; verify the exact species and pet considerations before buying. A medium-light elevated display after checking the exact plant’s care and pet considerations.

Light categories and care labels above reflect the cited guidance, not a controlled comparison. Conditions in a particular room and differences among cultivars can change what works.

Which plants suit which hanging spots?

For an easygoing trailing vine

Pothos is the strongest fit here if the location is low to moderately lit and you can let the soil dry moderately between waterings. Heartleaf philodendron is another trailing option for low to indirect light, but its guidance is to water when the topsoil dries. Both are identified as pet hazards by ASPCA if chewed or ingested, so do not assume hanging makes them inaccessible.

For a classic cascading basket

Spider plant has cascading stems and plantlets, while Boston fern’s arching fronds create a fuller silhouette. Spider plant is the simpler starting point if average moisture and indirect light suit your spot. Choose Boston fern only if you can maintain consistently moist, unsaturated growing medium; dry indoor air may brown its frond edges.

For a brighter window

Hoya is the bright-light choice in this shortlist. UNH Extension names Hoya among easy-care houseplants for an east- or west-facing window, while Illinois Extension places it in the high-light group. Inch plant is listed for medium light, so it may suit a less bright position than Hoya.

For compact foliage or an elevated shelf

Baby rubber plant is compact rather than a long cascade, making it a better match for a small container or shelf. Grape ivy, bird’s-nest fern, and asparagus fern are additional elevated-display candidates, but the cited listings do not provide the same basket-specific detail available for pothos, heartleaf philodendron, spider plant, and Boston fern. Treat the height as a display choice, not evidence that their care needs are interchangeable.

Set up the basket so care stays practical

  • Match light before hanging. Assess the spot at the height of the plant. A high location can still be too dim; supplemental plant lights are an option when natural light is inadequate, but the appropriate setup depends on the plant (Illinois Extension).
  • Choose a container you can remove or water safely. A basket planter works naturally for cascading growth. Keep drainage in mind and make sure the filled container can be taken down when needed; watering overhead can make spills and excess water difficult to manage.
  • Use a plant-appropriate growing medium. Suitable media vary by plant. Avoid leaving a plant in waterlogged soil, particularly when its guidance calls for drying between waterings.
  • Plan access for inspection. You will need to check soil moisture, remove damaged growth, and watch for changes in leaves. A beautiful but unreachable placement can make routine care difficult.
  • Check pet exposure before purchase. ASPCA lists spider plant and Boston fern as non-toxic to dogs and cats. It warns that pothos and philodendrons contain crystals that can irritate the mouth and gastrointestinal tract if chewed or ingested. Verify the exact plant, and do not treat a hanging position as proof that an animal cannot reach it (ASPCA plant listings).

Care differences that matter most

Do not apply one watering schedule to every hanging plant. Pothos can dry moderately between waterings; heartleaf philodendron guidance is to wait until topsoil dries; Boston fern prefers consistently moist, unsaturated medium. Peperomia also benefits from moderate drying, and Iowa State cautions that overwatering can cause rot. The plant and its medium—not the basket—determine the routine.

Likewise, “low maintenance” does not mean “ignore it.” A plant near a window may dry faster than one in a dimmer spot, and an elevated location can make moisture checks less convenient. Keep the plant accessible enough to respond to what its leaves and soil show rather than watering by a fixed calendar.
