The best mosquito repellent is an EPA-registered product whose active ingredient, concentration, protection time and label match your activity. DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD) and 2-undecanone are recognized active ingredients. The five products below are useful, evidence-backed options identified in Consumer Reports testing and excerpts, but the complete Consumer Reports 2026 ranking was not available; no order here represents a verified 2026 ranking.
Five practical options
| Product or formulation | Active ingredient reported in testing | Best fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repel Plant-Based Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent pump spray | Formulated oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) | People seeking a DEET-free, plant-derived option | Consumer Reports’ indexed 2026 excerpt called it a top-rated DEET-free option. Confirm the current EPA registration and label; do not substitute pure lemon eucalyptus oil. |
| OFF! Sportsmen Deep Woods Insect Repellent III | 30% DEET in Consumer Reports’ 2024 tick test | Long outdoor sessions where strong, broad protection is needed | The 30% formulation comes from a 2024 test; check that the package you buy has the same concentration and current label. |
| Sawyer Picaridin Insect Repellent pump spray | 20% picaridin in Consumer Reports’ 2024 tick test | A DEET alternative for camping, yard work and travel | The test establishes a relevant formulation, not a confirmed place in a 2026 mosquito-repellent top five. |
| Cutter Sport | 15% DEET in Consumer Reports’ 2024 tick test | Routine outdoor use when a moderate DEET concentration is suitable | Verify the current concentration, insects listed and reapplication directions on the package. |
| Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent2 | 30% OLE in Consumer Reports’ 2024 tick test | A formulated OLE choice for people avoiding DEET | Product names and formulas can change. Use only the EPA-registered product and its label directions. |
Consumer Reports says its laboratory testers apply a standard dose to an arm and count mosquito landings, probes and bites in a cage. Its buying guide reports that top performers in its tests have used DEET, OLE or picaridin. Those results help compare formulations, but they do not establish that every current package performs identically or that any item above is one of the five highest-ranked products in 2026.
How to choose among them
Start with the active ingredient and concentration
Higher concentrations generally last longer, although performance also depends on the mosquito species, temperature, sweat, water, rubbing and formulation. CDC says products below 10% active ingredient may provide limited protection, often for only one to two hours. DEET protection tends to peak near 50%; concentrations above that have not shown a marked increase in protection time.
Match the label to the insects and activity
Read the actual package for mosquitoes, ticks and any other listed insects. A product tested against ticks is a useful comparator, not proof that its current formula is the best choice for every mosquito species. More than 3,700 mosquito species exist worldwide, so no single test result applies identically everywhere.

Choose a format you will apply correctly
Pump sprays, aerosols, lotions and wipes can all work when used exactly as labeled. Select the format that lets you cover exposed skin evenly without getting product in your eyes, mouth or on irritated skin. Protection time is label-specific; reapply only at the stated interval and after activities the label identifies, such as swimming.
EPA registration matters more than “natural” marketing
CDC and EPA recommend EPA-registered repellents to reduce bites that can spread germs. EPA’s skin-applied ingredient page, updated January 23, 2026, listed more than 500 DEET products, about 40 picaridin products, about 45 IR3535 products, six PMD products, six OLE products and one 2-undecanone product at that time; counts can change.
Rank #2
- Two 4 oz cans of OFF Deep Woods Insect Repellent Aerosol protect against mosquitoes
- Outdoor bug repellent is formulated with 25% DEET and provides long lasting protection from mosquitoes, making this DEET mosquito repellent an ideal bug spray for camping, hiking, running and your favorite outdoor activities
- OFF mosquito spray offers effective protection from mosquitoes that may carry the Zika, Dengue, or West Nile viruses plus ticks that may cause Lyme disease, biting flies, gnats, and chiggers
- OFF bug spray with DEET comes in a convenient aerosol spray bottle for easy application
- Mosquito repellent spray goes on powder-dry, not oily or greasy, so you don't know you're wearing it and it doesn't stain
OLE and PMD are not the same as pure lemon eucalyptus essential oil. CDC does not recommend unformulated oil because it has not undergone validated safety and efficacy testing and is not EPA-registered. CDC also says not to use OLE or PMD products on children younger than 3.
Safe application
- Read the label first. Confirm the active ingredient, concentration, target insects, age directions, protection period and maximum applications.
- Apply sunscreen before repellent. Put repellent only on exposed skin or clothing, never underneath clothing.
- Keep it away from sensitive areas. Do not apply to a child’s hands, eyes, mouth, cuts or irritated skin. An adult should apply repellent to a child.
- Use only the amount directed. More product does not provide extra protection and can increase exposure.
- Wash it off when finished. Follow the label for washing skin and laundering treated clothing.
CDC’s Yellow Book 2026 says EPA-registered repellents are considered safe when used as directed, including for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Individual product labels still control age limits and other precautions.

Clothing, screens and nets
Long sleeves, long trousers, window screens, air conditioning and stroller or carrier netting reduce exposed skin and complement topical repellent.
Permethrin-treated clothing and gear
EPA-registered 0.5% permethrin-treated clothing and gear repel and kill mosquitoes and other biting arthropods. Treat or buy fabric products only as directed; items generally need 24–48 hours to dry before packing, and the label sets retreatment intervals. Never apply permethrin to skin. CDC names Sawyer, Repel and Ultrathon among marketed treatment brands, and Insect Shield, BugsAway and Insect Blocker for pretreated clothing.
Rank #4

A simple buying decision
- Want a DEET-free option? Compare a current EPA-registered OLE product such as the Repel formulations above, while observing the under-3 restriction.
- Need a familiar high-concentration option? Check the current label on a 30% DEET product such as the tested OFF! Sportsmen formulation.
- Prefer picaridin? A 20% picaridin pump spray is a practical comparator; verify its current EPA label and duration.
- Need protection for clothing and gear? Use permethrin only on fabric, never on skin, and allow treated items to dry as directed.
