Lipstick Plant Care That Actually Works Indoors

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A lipstick plant, botanically Aeschynanthus radicans, is one of the better indoor hanging plants for homeowners who want trailing foliage and bright red tubular flowers without turning plant care into a second job. Treat it as a warm-room tropical houseplant: bright indirect light, a fast-draining mix, steady moisture without soggy roots, and protection from cold drafts.

The short version of lipstick plant care is this: hang it where it gets strong filtered light, water when the top 1 to 2 inches of potting mix are dry, keep the room roughly 65 to 75 degrees F, and never let the pot sit in standing water. If the plant is not blooming, fix the light first before reaching for fertilizer.

From a builder’s point of view, the plant itself is only half the job. The other half is where it hangs, what happens when it drains, and whether the ceiling hook can carry the wet weight. On our job sites, water damage from houseplants usually comes from small, repeated leaks: a saucer overflow, a basket dripping on painted trim, or a hook installed into drywall instead of framing. This guide covers both sides: how to grow the plant and how to place it safely in a finished home.

What Is a Lipstick Plant?

Lipstick plant is the common name for Aeschynanthus radicans, also sold as lipstick vine, basket vine, or red lipstick plant. It is a tropical epiphytic plant, meaning it naturally grows attached to trees or other supports rather than sitting in heavy garden soil. That background explains most of its care needs indoors: loose roots, good airflow, warm temperatures, and filtered light.

The plant has glossy trailing stems that can spill 12 to 36 inches from a hanging basket under good indoor conditions. The flowers are the reason for the name. Red blooms emerge from darker tube-like calyces, resembling a lipstick tube. Blooming is most common in summer and fall, although a healthy plant in bright, stable indoor conditions may bloom more than once a year.

Outdoors, lipstick plant is generally hardy only in USDA Zones 10 to 11. For most of the United States, it belongs indoors for most or all of the year. If you move it outside in warm months, bring it back in before nights drop near 50 degrees F. Cold stress can cause leaf drop, and a plant hanging near a drafty door or single-pane window can suffer even when the thermostat reads comfortably.

Best Indoor Location for a Lipstick Plant

The best location is a bright room with indirect light, warm air, and enough space for the vines to hang freely. An east-facing window is often ideal. A south or west window can also work if the plant is set back several feet or protected with a sheer curtain. Harsh afternoon sun can scorch leaves, especially when the plant is close to glass.

Do not treat lipstick plant like a low-light pothos. It may stay alive in a dim corner, but flowering will usually be weak or nonexistent. If your goal is a full lipstick plant hanging basket with reliable blooms, light is the first lever to adjust.

Good Placement Options

A bright kitchen window can work well if the plant is not directly above a stove, heat register, or sink splash zone. Bathrooms can provide useful humidity, but only if there is real light and ventilation. A shelf near a window, a ceiling hook near a bright exposure, or a plant stand that lets vines trail down can all work.

Keep the plant at least 6 to 12 inches away from cold glass in winter. Avoid exterior doors, uninsulated sunrooms, and direct HVAC airflow. Forced-air heat can dry foliage quickly, while cold drafts can trigger leaf drop. The plant wants stability more than drama.

Light, Water, Soil, and Temperature

Most lipstick plant problems trace back to the same four items: not enough light, too much water, dense soil, or cold air. Dial those in and the plant becomes much easier to manage.

Light

Give lipstick plant medium to bright indirect light. For practical indoor placement, that means close to an east window, filtered south or west light, or a bright room where you can comfortably read without turning on a lamp during the day. If the plant grows long, thin stems with fewer leaves and no flowers, it likely needs more light.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use a grow light, place it roughly 12 to 18 inches above the foliage and run it 10 to 12 hours per day. A basic full-spectrum LED grow light is usually enough for one hanging basket. Watch the leaves for feedback: pale or scorched patches mean the light is too intense or too close; stretched growth means it is too weak or too far away.

Water

Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of mix are dry. In many homes, that means every 5 to 10 days in spring and summer and every 10 to 21 days in winter, but the calendar is only a starting point. Pot size, room temperature, humidity, light level, and soil mix all change the schedule.

When you water, water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom of the pot. Then let it drain completely before rehanging. A removable nursery pot inside a decorative hanging cachepot is the cleanest setup: carry the inner pot to the sink, water it there, wait 10 to 20 minutes, empty any collected water, and return it to the hanger.

  • UNIQUE CURLED FOLIAGE: The Aeschynanthus Rasta features distinctively twisted, curly leaves that create a one-of-a-kind sculptural appearance unlike any other houseplant.
  • BRIGHT RED BLOOMS: Produces vivid, tubular red flowers that emerge dramatically against the deep green curled foliage, adding a striking pop of color to any indoor space.
  • LIVE TRAILING PLANT: Arrives as a healthy, established live plant with trailing stems that make it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or tabletop displays.
  • READY TO GROW: Comes conveniently potted in a 4-inch pot, making it easy to place in your home right away or transplant into a decorative container of your choice.
  • EASY INDOOR CARE: Thrives in bright, indirect light with moderate watering, making it a rewarding and manageable houseplant for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.

Do not let the roots sit in standing water. Saturated soil cuts off oxygen around the roots and can lead to root rot. Common warning signs include yellowing leaves, mushy stems near the soil line, sour-smelling potting mix, and leaves dropping from otherwise wet soil.

Soil

Use a loose, fast-draining indoor potting mix. A good homeowner blend is 2 parts quality houseplant mix, 1 part perlite or pumice, and 1 part orchid bark or coco chips. The goal is a mix that holds some moisture but still has air pockets.

Avoid dense, moisture-retentive soil meant for outdoor planters. Lipstick plant is not built for compacted mud around its roots. If water sits on the surface for more than a few seconds before soaking in, or the pot remains heavy and wet for more than a week in normal room conditions, the mix is probably too dense.

Temperature and Humidity

A steady indoor temperature around 65 to 75 degrees F is a good target. The plant can tolerate warmer rooms if humidity and watering keep up, but avoid cold exposure. Leaf drop can occur below 50 degrees F.

Lipstick plant prefers humid air, but humidity without airflow is not a win. Constant misting in a stagnant corner can encourage fungal spots. If your indoor air is very dry, use a humidity tray, cluster plants together with space between them, or run a small humidifier nearby. Keep leaves from staying wet for long periods, especially in winter.

Potting, Hanging, and Protecting the House

This is where construction experience matters. A wet hanging basket is heavier than it looks, and water always finds the weak detail. Before you hang a lipstick plant over finished flooring, built-ins, window trim, or furniture, plan for weight and drainage.

Wet Weight Checklist

Estimate the total loaded weight, not the dry shelf weight at the nursery. A 6-inch hanging basket with plant, wet soil, plastic pot, hanger, and saucer can easily weigh 5 to 8 pounds. A fuller 8-inch basket may reach 10 to 15 pounds when saturated. Decorative ceramic cachepots add more weight fast.

Use hardware with a comfortable margin. If the basket may weigh 10 pounds wet, do not use a mystery hook rated for 10 pounds in drywall. A joist-mounted plant hook is the cleanest option. When a joist is not available, use properly rated toggle hardware installed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not hang plants from weak trim, curtain rods, lightweight ceiling tiles, or drywall alone.

Drainage Without Water Damage

The best setup is a nursery pot with drainage holes set inside a decorative hanging pot or basket. Remove the inner pot for watering, drain it at the sink, and rehang it only after dripping stops. This single habit prevents most stains, swollen window stools, peeling paint, and cupped wood flooring under hanging plants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you must water in place, use a deep saucer and inspect it after 15 minutes. Empty standing water. A clear plastic drip tray is cheap, but it still needs attention. For plants over hardwood, stone, painted trim, or cabinetry, assume one missed overflow can leave a mark.

2026 Lipstick Plant Costs

Lipstick plants are affordable compared with many trendy houseplants, but pricing varies with size, cultivar, fullness, shipping, and whether a decorative hanger or pot is included. In 2026, most homeowners should budget $25 to $60 for a good-looking plant and basic supplies if they already own a hook and drill. A more finished hanging setup can land closer to $75 to $125.

Item Typical 2026 Cost What Drives the Price
Starter plant, 2-4 inch pot $8-$20 Rooted cutting size, seller, shipping, cultivar
Standard 6 inch hanging basket $25-$31 Plant fullness, bloom status, nursery source
Specialty cultivars such as Rasta, Curly, Twister, or Black Pagoda $16-$50+ Rarity, leaf pattern, maturity, online demand
Premium planted arrangement $50-$75+ Self-watering pot, macrame hanger, decorative planter
DIY soil amendments and fertilizer $18-$50 total Small bags of perlite, orchid bark, potting mix, liquid fertilizer
Hanging hardware $5-$15 basic; $10-$40 decorative Ceiling hook, toggle, bracket, chain, finish
Pest supplies $8-$18 Insecticidal soap, neem product, alcohol swabs

If you are comparing plants online, check whether the price includes shipping, a heat pack or cold pack, a decorative pot, and the actual basket size. A $18 rooted starter can be a good buy, but it will not look like a full hanging basket for a while. A $30 6-inch basket is usually the better value when you want instant impact.

How to Get a Lipstick Plant to Bloom

If a lipstick plant looks healthy but will not flower, start with light. More bright filtered light generally improves blooming. Move the plant closer to a bright window or add a grow light before increasing fertilizer. Fertilizer cannot make up for a dim location.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

During spring and summer, feed with a balanced water-soluble houseplant fertilizer at half strength every 4 to 6 weeks while the plant is actively growing. Stop or reduce feeding in winter when growth slows. Heavy winter fertilizing can leave salts in the potting mix and stress the roots.

Keep the plant slightly snug in its pot. Repotting into a much larger container can leave too much wet soil around the roots, which slows growth and increases rot risk. Move up only 1 to 2 inches in pot diameter when roots are crowded or water runs through almost immediately because the root ball is dense.

Pruning also helps. After flowering, or during active growth, trim leggy stems back by a few inches to encourage branching. Use clean, sharp snips. A fuller plant with more growing tips has more potential bloom sites than a few long bare vines.

Pruning and Propagation

Prune lipstick plant when vines become thin, uneven, or too long for the space. Removing 2 to 6 inches from selected stems is usually enough. Avoid shearing the whole plant into a hard shape; it looks better when allowed to trail naturally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Healthy cuttings can be used for propagation. Cut a 4 to 6 inch stem section with several nodes. Remove the lower leaves, place the cutting in moist, airy potting mix, and keep it warm with bright indirect light. Rooting often takes several weeks. Keep the mix lightly moist, not soaked. Once the cutting resists a gentle tug and begins pushing new growth, treat it like a young plant.

If you want a fuller basket, plant three to five rooted cuttings around the rim of the same pot. That gives a denser look faster than waiting for one vine to branch on its own.

Common Problems and Fixes

Most lipstick plant issues are diagnosable if you look at the plant, the pot, and the room together. Do not treat symptoms in isolation. A yellow leaf can be normal aging, but several yellow leaves on wet soil point to a watering or drainage problem.

Yellow Leaves

Yellow leaves often come from overwatering, poor drainage, or a potting mix that stays wet too long. Check the bottom of the pot and saucer first. If the roots sit in water, empty it and let the mix dry down. If the soil is dense, repot into a looser mix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaf Drop

Leaf drop can follow cold exposure, sudden relocation, dry roots, or chronic overwatering. Look for nearby causes: a drafty door, cold window, HVAC vent, or inconsistent watering. If the plant was shipped recently, give it 2 to 4 weeks of stable care before making major changes.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light
  • Water: Water when top soil feels dry; do not overwater
  • Soil: Well-draining potting mix

No Flowers

No flowers usually means not enough light, immature growth, or excessive stress. Move the plant into brighter filtered light and keep watering consistent. Feed lightly in active growth. Do not keep repotting or relocating the plant every week; stability matters.

Brown Leaf Tips

Brown tips can come from low humidity, fertilizer salt buildup, inconsistent watering, or direct sun. Flush the pot with clean water, let it drain completely, and reassess light exposure. If the air is very dry, add a humidity tray or humidifier with airflow.

Pests

Inspect for mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites, especially on new plants. Check leaf undersides, stem nodes, and tight new growth. Quarantine new plants for 1 to 2 weeks before placing them near the rest of your collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For early pests, wipe small infestations with alcohol on a cotton swab or use insecticidal soap or neem products according to the label. Pesticide labels are legal directions, not suggestions. Use only products labeled for the plant and setting, follow indoor-use instructions, and keep treatments away from children, pets, food surfaces, and ventilation intakes.

Seasonal Care Calendar

Spring

Increase watering as growth resumes. Prune leggy stems, take cuttings, and begin light feeding every 4 to 6 weeks. This is also a good time to repot if the plant is rootbound. Move up only 1 to 2 inches in pot size.

Summer

Expect the fastest growth and the best bloom potential. Keep the plant in bright filtered light, water when the top 1 to 2 inches dry, and protect it from harsh afternoon sun. If you move it outdoors, place it in shade or bright filtered light, never full hot sun.

Fall

Bring outdoor plants inside before nights approach 50 degrees F. Inspect for pests before reintroducing the plant to your indoor collection. Reduce fertilizer as growth slows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Winter

Water less often, but do not let the root ball become bone dry for long periods. Keep the plant away from cold glass and heat blasts. Supplemental light can help maintain growth and reduce leaf drop in darker homes.

DIY vs Hiring a Pro

Most homeowners can handle lipstick plant care themselves. Buying the plant, mixing soil, pruning, propagating, and basic pest control are all normal DIY tasks. A realistic first-year DIY budget is $40 to $125 depending on plant size, pot, hanger, soil supplies, and hardware.

Hiring help makes sense in specific cases: high ceilings, stairwells, atriums, offices, commercial lobbies, senior living facilities, or multi-plant installations where access and watering logistics matter. In those settings, the visit minimum from an interior plant service usually costs more than the lipstick plant itself, but the value is consistent care and fewer building maintenance problems.

For hanging hardware, hire a handyman or carpenter if you are not comfortable locating framing, drilling overhead, or choosing anchors. This is especially true for plaster ceilings, old houses, masonry walls, and rental properties where mistakes are expensive. A properly mounted hook is a small job, but a failed hook can damage drywall, flooring, furniture, and the plant.

Safety, Pets, and Import Notes

Do not make a casual pet-safety assumption. Some popular plant references describe lipstick plant as non-toxic, but retailer claims are not always consistent. The conservative approach is simple: keep all houseplants, potting mix, fertilizers, and pest products out of reach of pets and children. If pet safety is the deciding factor, verify with your veterinarian or a current toxic plant database before relying on the plant being safe.

If you buy from an out-of-state seller, choose one with strong reviews, weather-aware shipping, and clear plant photos. Avoid importing live plants from outside the United States unless you understand current USDA plant import requirements. Live plants can require permits, inspections, phytosanitary certificates, and approved handling depending on origin and species. For a typical homeowner, buying from a reputable US nursery is the practical path.

For renters, check lease rules before drilling into ceilings or walls. For homeowners, no building permit is normally required to hang a small indoor plant, but safe installation still matters. Use properly rated hardware, avoid electrical paths, and do not drill blindly into ceilings or walls.

Bottom Line

Lipstick plant care is straightforward when you match the plant to its natural preferences. Give Aeschynanthus radicans bright indirect light, warmth, loose soil, and careful watering. Keep humidity comfortable but ventilated. Prune after bloom cycles to keep the basket full. Inspect pests early.

Then handle the house like a contractor would: calculate wet weight, mount into framing or rated anchors, water at the sink when possible, and protect finished surfaces from slow leaks. Do those things and a lipstick plant can be a clean, long-lived indoor hanging plant rather than a recurring maintenance problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much light does a lipstick plant need indoors?

A lipstick plant needs medium to bright indirect light indoors. An east window or filtered south or west exposure is usually best. Low light may keep the plant alive, but it usually reduces blooming.

How often should you water Aeschynanthus radicans?

Water when the top 1 to 2 inches of potting mix are dry. In many homes that means every 5 to 10 days in active growth and every 10 to 21 days in winter, but soil moisture matters more than the calendar.

Why is my lipstick plant not blooming?

The most common reason is not enough bright filtered light. Improve light first, then use light fertilizer during spring and summer. Avoid overwatering, cold drafts, and oversized pots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can lipstick plants grow outdoors in the United States?

Outdoors, lipstick plant is generally suitable only in USDA Zones 10 to 11. In most of the United States, grow it indoors or move it inside before nights get near 50 degrees F.

What soil mix is best for lipstick plant?

Use a loose, well-draining houseplant mix amended with perlite, pumice, orchid bark, coco chips, or similar coarse material. Dense soil that stays wet too long can cause root problems.

Can I hang a lipstick plant from the ceiling safely?

Yes, if the hardware is rated for the plant’s wet weight and installed properly. A saturated 6-inch basket may weigh 5 to 8 pounds, and larger baskets can reach 10 to 15 pounds. Mount into a joist when possible or use properly rated toggle hardware.
