Use well-drained soil in a pot with drainage, water thoroughly, and let the soil dry between waterings; reduce watering in winter. Persistent wet soil is the main preventable problem because it can cause root rot.
Snake Plant Basics
Snake plant grows upright from rhizomes and has stiff, sword-shaped leaves. It tolerates a range of indoor conditions, including low humidity, but responds better to a warm, bright room than to a dark corner. Lower light can reduce the intensity of variegated markings.
Best Light and Placement Indoors
Place the plant in a bright room or near a window with filtered light. It tolerates low light, but growth may be slower and leaf markings less pronounced. Protect it from harsh afternoon sun through hot glass, and introduce direct sunlight gradually if moving it from a dimmer location.
Choose a warm indoor spot away from cold drafts and sudden cold exposure. North Carolina State Extension notes that the plant can tolerate cool temperatures around 50°F; this is a tolerance guide, not an ideal target. A bright window or filtered-light location is generally a more useful everyday choice.

How to Water a Snake Plant
Let the soil dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain. Do not follow a fixed calendar without checking the soil: pot size, soil, light, temperature, and home conditions all affect how quickly it dries.
During spring and summer, water when the soil has dried. In fall and winter, reduce watering as growth slows. North Carolina State Extension gives one to two months between winter waterings as a regional guide; adjust to actual drying conditions. Colorado State Extension advises allowing the medium to dry slightly during the slower-growth fall and winter period. Avoid keeping the plant persistently wet, and pour water onto the soil rather than into the leaf rosette.
Best Soil and Pot
Use well-drained soil and a pot with drainage holes. A cactus and succulent potting mix is a reasonable option; the most important point is that the medium should not stay wet for long. Avoid setups that trap excess water around the roots.

Drainage and stability matter more than pot material or appearance. Tall foliage can make a plant top-heavy, so a wider, heavier pot can help keep it upright. Colorado State University Extension notes that clay or ceramic pots are often used for stability, while UF/IFAS describes wider-than-normal clay pots for the same reason. Whatever the material, make sure excess water can escape.
| Choice | Useful when | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Bright indirect light | You want better growth and more visible markings | Shield the plant from harsh afternoon sun |
| Low-light location | The room has limited light | The plant tolerates it, but growth and variegation may diminish |
| Pot with drainage | For routine indoor growing | Let excess water drain; do not leave the pot standing in water |
| Wider, heavier pot | The foliage makes the plant top-heavy | Stability is useful, but the pot still needs drainage |
Propagating Snake Plants
You can propagate snake plants by division or leaf-section cuttings. Division is the better choice for preserving the pattern of variegated cultivars; Iowa State University Extension warns that many variegated forms may not come true-to-type from leaf cuttings.
Propagate by division
- Remove the plant from its pot and identify natural sections with leaves, roots, and rhizome attached.
- Separate a section with clean tools, keeping enough roots to support it.
- Plant the division in well-drained soil and place it in bright indirect light.
- Water conservatively while it establishes.
Propagate from leaf sections
Leaf-section cuttings are an alternative, but they may not preserve variegation. Iowa State University Extension recommends 3–4 inch leaf sections and notes that new shoots or plantlets may appear in about two months. Timing can vary with growing conditions, so treat that as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Common Problems
Rotting or soft leaves
Persistently wet soil and overwatering can cause root rot. Check that the pot drains, avoid leaving water in an outer container, and let the soil dry between waterings. If the plant is rotting, remove it from the wet setup and address the drainage and watering conditions.
Faded markings or slow growth
Low light is tolerated, but it can reduce growth and the intensity of variegation. Move the plant to a brighter indirect-light location if practical, avoiding a sudden move into strong afternoon sun.

Mealybugs and spider mites may occur. Inspect the foliage periodically, especially when watering, and address any pests you find. North Carolina State Extension notes that serious pest or disease problems are generally not common for the plant.

FAQ
How often should I water a snake plant indoors?
Water when the soil has dried between waterings, then let excess water drain. Reduce watering in winter. North Carolina State Extension suggests one to two months between winter waterings as a regional guide, but check the soil rather than relying on a universal schedule.
How much light does a snake plant need?
It tolerates low light, but medium to bright indirect light is a sound target for better growth and more visible markings. Protect it from harsh afternoon sun.
Does a snake plant need drainage holes?
A pot with drainage is the practical choice because it lets excess water escape. Drainage helps prevent the soil from staying persistently wet, which can lead to root rot.

Use well-drained soil that does not remain wet for long. Cactus and succulent potting mix is a reasonable option; drainage and careful watering are the priorities.
Why is my snake plant rotting?
Overwatering and persistently wet soil can cause root rot. Check the pot’s drainage, avoid standing water, and let the soil dry between waterings.
How do I propagate a variegated snake plant and keep its markings?
Use division to preserve the parent plant’s variegation. Leaf-section cuttings are possible, but many variegated forms may not come true-to-type from them.
