A money tree in this guide means Pachira aquatica. Give it bright indirect light, a moist but well-drained potting mix, and water when a soil check shows it is dry about two inches down; then let excess water drain and empty the saucer. Outdoors, it is suited to warm climates, while plants in colder areas should come inside before temperatures fall to 45°F, as North Carolina State University Extension advises.
What a Money Tree Is
Money tree is a common name used for Pachira aquatica, though common plant names can be ambiguous. You may also see it sold as money plant, Guiana chestnut, or Malabar chestnut. In its native tropical habitat, it can become a large tree. Indoors, it is grown as a foliage houseplant.
The plant has glossy green compound leaves and a thickened trunk base. Many retail plants are braided when young. The braid is cosmetic, not required for plant health. A healthy plant should have firm stems and potting mix that smells earthy rather than sour.
The braided form creates one special maintenance concern: rot can hide where stems touch. If one stem turns soft, black, wrinkled, or sour-smelling, inspect the roots and the center of the braid. A decaying stem should not be ignored.

Best Light and Indoor Placement
Money trees prefer indirect light or a mix of sun and shade, according to North Carolina State University Extension. Place the plant where it gets bright filtered light, adjusting to the conditions in your room; no one window direction is right for every home. Direct sun can scorch leaves.
When moving a plant from a store or indoors to a brighter location, increase its exposure gradually rather than placing it in strong direct sun all at once. Illinois Extension recommends starting outdoor moves with a few hours and increasing exposure each day over one to two weeks. This is general houseplant guidance.
Rotate the pot occasionally if light comes mainly from one side. This can help the canopy grow more evenly.
Places to Avoid
Keep the plant away from cold drafts, exterior doors, radiators, fireplaces, and HVAC vents. North Carolina State University Extension lists 65–75°F as the preferred temperature range. Avoid dark corners, where growth may slow and potting mix can take longer to dry.

Watering should be based on soil moisture and growing conditions, not a fixed calendar. Light, temperature, humidity, plant and pot size, potting mix, and drainage all affect how quickly a plant uses water, Illinois Extension explains.
- Check the potting mix about two inches deep with a finger. A moisture probe can help, but Illinois Extension cautions that probes may not always be reliable.
- If the mix is dry at that depth, water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom. If it is still damp, wait and check again later.
- Empty the saucer or decorative outer pot after watering. Do not leave the nursery pot standing in water.
Why Drainage Matters More Than Decorative Stones
Decorative stones in the bottom of a pot without drainage holes do not provide a substitute for drainage. Use an inner grow pot with drainage holes inside a decorative cachepot. After watering, remove excess water from the cachepot before returning the plant.
If the plant came with glued decorative moss or pebbles, loosen or remove the top dressing enough to check soil moisture and the trunk base.
Soil, Pot, and Drainage Setup
North Carolina State University Extension recommends a moist, well-drained container mix. It lists peat moss, perlite, loam, or sand as possible components, but does not prescribe one universal ratio. Choose a mix that retains some moisture without staying waterlogged, and use a pot with drainage holes.

Do not leave water standing in the saucer or cachepot. North Carolina State University Extension warns that standing water can cause root rot. Keep the trunk base at the same soil level it had before repotting, rather than burying it deeper.
Floor and Furniture Protection
For a plant on finished floors, shelving, or furniture, use a waterproof saucer or tray and check it after watering. Keep the pot stable and leave enough space to water and inspect it without spilling onto nearby surfaces.
Humidity and Temperature
North Carolina State University Extension gives a preferred temperature range of 65–75°F and advises bringing the plant indoors before temperatures fall to 45°F. It lists USDA hardiness zones 10–12. Protect outdoor plants from strong winds.
The sources reviewed for this guide do not establish a precise indoor humidity target for money trees. If leaf edges turn brown, treat that as a clue to check watering consistency, drafts, and the plant’s growing conditions rather than assuming one cause.
Fertilizing and Seasonal Growth
Illinois Extension advises fertilizing houseplants during active growth and cautions that too much fertilizer can damage roots. Follow the fertilizer label, and avoid feeding a plant that is stressed until you have checked its light, watering, and drainage.
Pruning, Shaping, and Braided Trunk Care
Remove dead or damaged leaves with clean snips. If stems stretch toward a window, review the light and rotate the plant as needed. Check any braid ties, nursery wires, or plastic bands; loosen or remove ties if they are constricting the stems.
Repotting a Money Tree
Consider repotting when roots have filled the container, the mix has degraded or compacted, or the plant’s drainage needs attention. Use a pot with drainage holes and fresh, well-drained mix. Keep the plant at its previous soil depth and avoid leaving it in standing water.
Common Problems and Fixes
Yellow Leaves
Yellow leaves can have more than one cause. Check the soil moisture, drainage, light, and recent changes in the plant’s environment. North Carolina State University Extension lists low humidity and inadequate nutrients among possible associations; symptoms alone do not confirm a diagnosis.

Brown or Dropping Leaves
Leaf browning or drop can be a clue to review watering, light, temperature, and recent moves. North Carolina State University Extension notes that soil that is too dry can cause leaf drop. Check the growing conditions before changing the watering routine.
Soft Trunk or Sour Soil
A soft trunk, sour smell, or persistently wet mix may point to root or stem rot. Check the drainage setup and inspect roots if the plant is declining. North Carolina State University Extension warns that standing water can cause root rot.
Pest Prevention and Quarantine
Inspect new plants before placing them near other houseplants. Illinois Extension recommends considering a two- to three-week quarantine and checking for pests. North Carolina State University Extension lists aphids, mealybugs, scale, and fungus gnats among pests to monitor.
If you find pests, isolate the plant and identify the problem before treating it. For fungus gnats, review whether the soil is staying too wet and whether water is collecting in the saucer.
Can a Money Tree Grow Outside?
Outdoor growing is climate-limited. North Carolina State University Extension lists Pachira aquatica for USDA hardiness zones 10–12, advises protection from strong winds, and says to bring plants indoors before temperatures fall to 45°F. In colder areas, grow the plant indoors or move it outside only during warm weather.
When moving a plant outdoors, acclimate it gradually: Illinois Extension recommends starting with a few hours outside and increasing exposure each day over one to two weeks. Inspect the plant for pests before bringing it back indoors. Drainage still matters in outdoor containers, especially after rain.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
Routine watering, inspection, and pruning are generally household tasks. For offices, lobbies, or multi-plant installations, interior plant-care help may be useful; service costs depend on the provider and scope.
Where construction judgment can matter is placement: keep planters stable, protect finished surfaces from water, and avoid blocking walkways, doors, or maintenance access.
Simple Care Routine
- Check the soil about two inches deep; water thoroughly when it is dry at that depth.
- Empty standing water from the saucer or cachepot after watering.
- Inspect leaves, stems, and the soil surface for changes or pests.
- Keep the plant in bright filtered light and a stable, warm location.
- During active growth, follow fertilizer label directions and avoid overfeeding.
