The best glove for concrete block work depends on whether you are handling dry blocks or touching wet mortar, grout, or concrete. For dry handling, choose a well-fitting glove with documented mechanical protection and usable grip; for wet cement, use a suitable, heavy-duty nitrile or butyl barrier glove that keeps caustic material off your skin.
No material name or general-purpose construction label guarantees protection. Check the glove maker’s use and care information against the task, exposure duration, splash risk, and hazards on site.
Why Wet Cement Needs Special Care
Wet Portland cement is caustic, abrasive, and moisture-absorbing. Contact can cause cement burns or irritant dermatitis, and some people can develop allergic contact dermatitis after sensitization. Cement burns may not hurt immediately, so pain is not a dependable warning that exposure is occurring. OSHA also notes trace hexavalent chromium in Portland cement.
A glove that lets wet cement soak through or enter at the cuff can prolong skin contact. Cotton and leather are not suitable barriers for wet cement; OSHA says butyl or nitrile gloves are frequently recommended for Portland-cement work. Choose gloves for the actual exposure and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Choose by Task
| Task | What to look for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Handling dry concrete blocks | A close-fitting work glove with documented abrasion, cut, and puncture performance appropriate to the site; practical grip and dexterity | A mechanical rating does not establish chemical protection |
| Working with wet mortar, grout, or concrete | A properly fitting, heavy-duty nitrile or butyl glove intended for the exposure; sufficient protected length and a manageable cuff | Material alone does not prove suitability; check the maker’s use and limitation information |
| Tasks that combine block handling and wet cement | Use the glove category suited to each exposure and change gloves when the task changes | A coated knit glove is not automatically an impervious wet-cement barrier |
For Dry Block Handling
Dry block handling mainly presents mechanical concerns: rough faces and edges, repeated abrasion, incidental sharp materials, grip, and hand fatigue. A nitrile-coated or fully coated cut-resistant work glove may be a suitable option, but compare the manufacturer’s stated performance and coverage with the hazards on your job. Do not assume every coated glove has the same protection or grip in dusty or damp conditions.
ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 provides classifications for hand and arm protection, including abrasion, cut, and puncture performance. Use the markings to compare gloves, not as a guarantee that a glove suits every task or protects against wet cement.
For example, SHOWA describes its S-TEX 377SC as fully nitrile-coated, abrasion-resistant, and featuring an ANSI A4 cut claim, foam grip, and reinforced cuff. That is an example of the information a product data sheet may provide, not proof of an independent overall win or suitability as a wet-mortar barrier.

For Wet Mortar, Grout, and Concrete
Start with a properly fitting, heavy-duty nitrile or butyl glove intended for the expected cement exposure. Check the maker’s information for use, limitations, cleaning, and replacement. Chemical-glove performance can vary; selection depends on factors such as contact type and duration, temperature, abrasion or tear demands, grip, dexterity, and how much of the arm needs protection.

OSHA advises wearing long sleeves over gloves and taping the sleeve-to-glove interface when needed. The glove should fit without bunching, and wet cement must not be allowed to enter and collect inside it.
Do not treat a thin disposable nitrile glove as sufficient for abrasive block work, or assume a nitrile-coated knit glove is an impervious cement glove. These are different constructions; check the product documentation and match the glove to the task.

Fit, Cleaning, and Replacement
- Wash and dry your hands before putting gloves on. Wash your hands whenever gloves come off.
- Keep glove interiors clean and dry. Clean reusable gloves as the manufacturer directs.
- Before removal, rinse or clean contaminated glove exteriors and remove gloves without touching their contaminated surfaces.
- Discard worn-out or grossly contaminated gloves, and replace gloves that no longer protect as intended.
- Do not use barrier creams or “invisible gloves” as protection from Portland-cement hazards.
If wet cement contacts bare skin, wash promptly with clean, cool water and pH-neutral or slightly acidic soap. Do not use abrasive or waterless cleaners on affected skin. Seek medical care for a suspected cement burn or persistent skin symptoms.
Common Glove-Selection Mistakes
- Using cotton or leather for wet cement: These materials are not the recommended barrier for caustic cement exposure.
- Relying on the material name alone: Check that the specific glove is intended for the exposure and duration.
- Confusing mechanical and chemical protection: A cut rating does not show whether a glove protects against wet cement.
- Ignoring fit and cuff entry: A loose glove or unprotected interface can let cement inside.
- Keeping contaminated or worn gloves in service: Follow the maker’s cleaning and replacement directions; do not reuse a glove with a contaminated interior.
- Relying on barrier cream: OSHA says it is not a substitute for gloves and other appropriate precautions.
Workplace PPE Note
For U.S. employment, gloves are not categorically required for every masonry task. OSHA’s interpretation says gloves are not required when a task has no hand hazard capable of causing injury or impairment. A qualified person should assess the activity and select appropriate protection. For employer-specific or unusual exposures, follow the site hazard assessment, safety data sheet, and glove manufacturer’s instructions.

Are nitrile gloves suitable for wet cement?
OSHA identifies heavy-duty nitrile gloves as a frequent recommendation for Portland-cement exposure. Suitability depends on the specific glove, exposure, duration, and maker’s instructions; a thin disposable glove is not automatically adequate.
Are leather gloves safe for wet mortar?
Do not rely on leather as a barrier for wet cement. OSHA says butyl or nitrile gloves are frequently recommended for Portland-cement work, rather than cotton or leather.
Does a cut-resistant rating mean a glove protects against cement?
No. Cut ratings describe mechanical performance, not resistance to wet cement. Check the glove’s chemical-use information separately.
