Before planting, inspect the planter and correct wear or setup problems that can interfere with seed placement. These nine checks cover the row unit and whole machine; use your planter’s manual for model-specific dimensions, pressures, clearances and adjustments. Maintenance can reduce avoidable equipment problems, but the cited guidance does not quantify a yield gain from completing this checklist.
1. Check planter level, tires and visible damage
Park on a level surface and inspect the toolbar and frame for visible damage. Check tire pressure and set the planter level according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the machine’s operating conditions. Incorrect tire pressure can affect toolbar leveling and seed placement, according to University of Georgia Extension.
2. Inspect row-unit spacing, linkage and bearings
Confirm row units are spaced correctly, particularly if the planter has been modified or you have recently acquired it. Look for loose or damaged pivots, linkage and bearings, and check that each row unit moves as intended. Follow the manual for the correct spacing and any model-specific inspection procedure.
3. Measure opener discs and inspect seed guards
Check opener discs for damage, dullness, wear and lateral play. Inspect seed guards for wear, too. Disc diameter and the required contact between discs are model-specific, so use the manufacturer’s limits rather than assuming one threshold applies to every planter.

The published examples illustrate why specifications should not be mixed: Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s 2026 guide gives 14.5 inches as a replacement example for a standard 15-inch John Deere or Kinze blade. John Deere’s inspection checklist lists a 14-inch minimum. UGA Extension gives a general example of replacing a disc worn more than half an inch below its original diameter. These are source- and equipment-specific examples, not interchangeable universal rules.
For disc contact, Iowa State and UGA describe 1.75 to 2 inches as an example range, with UGA illustrating a business-card check at the 4 o’clock position. Check your manual for the specified location and measurement before adjusting or replacing parts.

- 300G THICKENED FABRIC, BUILT FOR MULTIPLE SEASONS — 300 g/m² non-woven fabric (vs. 200 g/m² or thinner on entry-level bags), so the walls hold their shape when filled and resist tearing at the seams. Each empty bag weighs 4 oz — 16 oz for the 4-pack. Fold flat and store indoors over winter and they are built to be replanted season after season 3.
- AIR-PRUNED ROOTS, NO ROOT ROT — Water drains through the whole fabric wall instead of pooling at one drainage hole, and air reaches the root ball from every side. Roots stop at the fabric edge and branch out instead of circling the pot, which is why plants in fabric bags build a denser feeder-root system than plants in plastic pots. Indoors, set the bags on a saucer or tray — the fabric drains from the base.
- DOUBLE-STITCHED HANDLES THAT DON'T RIP — Two woven webbing straps are sewn to the bag wall with a double-stitched box-X reinforcement (not cut from the same fabric as the bag body), tested to carry 180 LB. A filled 5-gallon bag of damp soil runs roughly 40–50 lbs, so the handles are the part that decides whether you can chase the sun across a patio — or not.Equipped with strong reinforced handles, easy to move the plants around your garden, patio or balcony, even when the bag is filled with soil.
- SIZED FOR HERBS, GREENS, STRAWBERRIES & FLOWERS — 12.2" across and 10.2" deep is the right root room for basil, mint, cilantro, rosemary, lettuce, spinach, strawberries, marigolds and compact peppers. Growing full-size tomatoes, potatoes or squash? Size up to our 7, 10 or 15 gallon bags instead — those crops need more depth than a 5-gallon bag can give.
- FOLDS FLAT — STORE THE WHOLE SET IN A DRAWER — Empty the soil, fold each bag flat, and all 4 stack down to about 1.96inch — they slide into a cupboard gap or under a shelf instead of taking up a corner of the balcony all winter. Rigid plastic pots can't do this, which is what makes fabric bags practical for apartments and small patios.
4. Check gauge wheels and depth control
Inspect gauge wheels for damage and free movement. Check that they contact the opener discs, and look for side play in the arms or bearings. Iowa State describes a practical check in which the wheels contact the discs but can still be turned by hand with slight pressure.
Where appropriate, set or calibrate planting depth on a level surface for the depth you expect to use. Follow the planter’s procedure; do not rely on a generic setting in place of the manual.

5. Inspect seed meters and confirm crop setup
Inspect the meter’s applicable seals, brushes, scrapers, fingers, disks and eliminators for wear or damage. Confirm that the installed disk or crop kit matches the seed and crop you will plant. If your system supports it, evaluate meter performance on a test stand or use row-level monitoring to identify inconsistent performance. A dealer may offer seed-meter test-stand inspection or calibration.
6. Check seed tubes, sensors and the seed path
Look for cracks, wear, debris and obstructions in seed tubes, and make sure sensors are secure and functioning. On high-speed systems, inspect additional wear items such as belts, brushes or cartridges where fitted. Clear obstructions and replace damaged parts using components compatible with your planter.

Check closing wheels for wear or damage, and inspect their bearings, arms and play. Confirm that the wheels are centered and aligned behind the row unit. Iowa State describes one alignment check: set the planter on concrete and pull it forward several feet to observe the closing-wheel track. Adjust the closing system for your planter and field conditions rather than assuming one configuration is best for every situation.

9. Inspect drive, vacuum, hydraulic and electrical systems
Check chains, sprockets, idlers, bearings and chain tension. Inspect the vacuum fan and hoses, hydraulic connections, wiring and sensors for wear, leaks, damage or loose connections. Lubricate and replace worn or damaged components as directed by the equipment manual. If a problem persists or an adjustment is unclear, consult the manufacturer’s instructions or a qualified dealer.
What to do when a part is worn
Replace components when inspection shows wear or damage beyond the applicable specification—not simply because they appear on a checklist. For replacement opener discs, seed tubes and guards, gauge-wheel parts, meter components, bearings, chains or closing-wheel components, confirm compatibility with the planter make, model and row unit. Match the part and adjustment to the manufacturer’s specification and the planting system.
