Wood chips are most useful as a surface cover: they can mulch trees, shrubs and perennial beds, line garden paths and protect the aisles between raised beds. They also suppress some weeds, slow moisture loss and moderate soil temperature. These are overlapping benefits of using chips as mulch, not eight unrelated gardening methods. Keep fresh chips out of annual vegetable beds, where decomposing wood can temporarily tie up nitrogen.
1. Mulch around trees and shrubs
Spread clean arborist chips over the soil around trees and shrubs to cover bare ground, reduce weeds and help conserve moisture. Keep the chips on the surface rather than digging them into the soil, and leave space around each trunk so the mulch does not touch the bark.
Iowa State University Extension gives a general depth of 2 to 4 inches, with coarser mulch toward the higher end. Oregon State University Extension recommends 3 to 4 inches for wood chips or arborist mulch in shrub and tree beds. Treat these as source-specific guidelines: the right depth depends on chip size and site conditions. Excessively deep mulch can contribute to waterlogging, low soil oxygen, shallow rooting or overly warm soil in winter. Iowa State University Extension and Oregon State University Extension explain their recommendations.
2. Cover perennial beds and roses
Coarse chips can also mulch established landscape plantings, including roses and perennial beds. Keep the layer on the surface, avoid burying plant crowns, and leave room around stems. Use the same depth guidance as for woody plantings, adjusting for the material and site rather than piling chips on simply to make a thicker layer.

3. Make permanent garden paths
A layer of chips gives garden paths a defined, covered surface and helps limit weeds in the walking area. Chips settle and decompose, so plan to top up or refresh the path as needed. Choose a known, clean source; for example, avoid chipped lumber or pallet material that may contain chemicals or be dyed to obscure its origin, a risk noted by Iowa State University Extension.
4. Cover aisles between raised beds
Use chips in the walking aisles between vegetable beds rather than mixing fresh chips into the planted beds. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension recommends chips between beds and suggests straw for the beds themselves. This puts chips where a durable surface and weed suppression are useful while keeping fresh, high-carbon wood away from annual crop roots. Maine Extension’s vegetable-garden guidance explains this distinction.

5. Suppress weeds on covered soil
A sufficiently deep surface layer can smother young weed seedlings and reduce the number that emerge, particularly annual weeds. It will not control weeds indefinitely: persistent or established weeds may still need to be removed or managed by other means. A mulch layer also needs maintenance as it settles and breaks down. Oregon State Extension discusses wood chips as an organic mulch for woody landscape areas in its mulching guidance.
6. Reduce moisture loss from bare soil
Covering bare soil with chips can slow evaporation, helping more water remain available to plants. Oklahoma State University Extension describes this benefit in its wood-chip brochure, alongside weed reduction and soil cooling. The amount of water saved will depend on local weather, soil and how the mulch is applied. Oklahoma State University’s brochure addresses conditions in its regional context.

7. Moderate soil temperature
Wood chips can buffer soil from heat, but the temperature effect is not a universal fixed amount. The Oklahoma State University, Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality and USDA brochure, revised in 2013, reports that under hot Oklahoma conditions mulched soil can be up to 30°F cooler than bare soil; it also gives a 15°F difference at three-inch soil depth on a typical Oklahoma summer afternoon. Those figures describe the brochure’s local conditions, not a guaranteed result in every garden. Read the brochure.

Wood chips can supply carbon in a compost pile. That is different from mixing fresh chips into soil around annual vegetables: high-carbon wood decomposes slowly, and decomposers can temporarily use nitrogen in the soil during that process. Keep fresh chips on the surface or in paths, and use them in compost when you want a carbon-rich material. Maine Extension covers both the compost use and vegetable-bed caution in its recommendations for arborist chips.

Choose chips carefully and place them safely
- Ask what is in the load. Arborist chips may include mixed wood, bark, leaves, sticks and larger pieces. Ask the supplier about unwanted plant material, such as poison oak or English ivy. Oregon State Extension also notes that disease concerns can depend on the source material and host plants; seek local extension advice if disease risk is relevant to your site.
- Keep fresh chips out of annual vegetable soil. Do not incorporate them into planted beds; use them on the surface, in paths or between beds instead. See Maine Extension and University of Maryland Extension.
- Mind buildings and flames. Wood chips are combustible. Avoid piling organic mulch next to buildings, and follow local fire-safety guidance for distances from structures and open flames. Oklahoma State’s brochure discusses these regional safety concerns: Wood Chips Have Many Uses.
- Consider the source and cost. Local arborists or municipal facilities may offer chips at low or no cost, but availability and material vary by location. If buying bagged wood-chip mulch, check that its source and intended use suit your garden.
