On October 6, 2026, 84 Lumber said it operated 22 truss plants across 13 states and highlighted a Production Manager Trainee program at its Winchester, Virginia, facility. Open roles and requirements vary by location, so treat the company’s program details and reported outcomes as its account, then check the live posting before applying.
What does a truss builder do?
Truss builders assemble roof and floor trusses from lumber according to engineered drawings. In one example posting for Cartersville, Georgia, the work involves setting lumber in jigs and using nail guns and hand tools while meeting production, quality and safety standards. That listing is an example, not a universal description of every plant role.

84 Lumber’s production overview describes a broader set of floor tasks: measuring lumber, operating saws, nail guns, staplers and forklifts, checking setup accuracy and finished quality, and helping train teammates. The mix depends on the position and facility. See 84 Lumber’s manufacturing careers overview.
Do I need experience to work in truss manufacturing?
84 Lumber’s careers page says no experience is required to get started, but that general statement does not replace the qualifications in an individual job listing. The Cartersville Truss Builder example emphasizes assembling trusses and reading drawings; applicants should confirm the requirements, physical expectations and safety instructions for the specific opening. How long is 84 Lumber’s Production Manager Trainee program?
84 Lumber says training at Winchester generally takes 9–12 months. The company describes a rotation through production, customer service, dispatch and design, exposure to plant leadership, and visits to jobsites. Trainees may operate a saw, build trusses and operate a forklift as they learn how the plant’s functions connect. The program’s purpose, as described by the company, is both to develop manufacturing leadership and to help trainees discover which work suits them.

Can a production job lead to plant management?
84 Lumber’s published manufacturing ladder includes Production Manager Trainee, Production Manager and General Manager. In its October 6, 2026 announcement, 84 Lumber reported that more than 30 associates had graduated since the program was relaunched about two years earlier, including six who became plant managers. It said others moved into production management, design and specialized production work. The announcement gives no total number of eligible participants, so these counts do not establish a promotion or placement rate.
Ken Kucera, 84 Lumber’s Vice President of Installed Sales and Manufacturing, said: “If you work hard, we’ll support you, we’ll give you training, we’ll give you opportunities.” National Production Manager for 84 Components Scott Compton described how trainees can discover different interests: “They may come in thinking they want to be in production leadership, or they may want to be a general manager, but once they get a taste of some of those other things, they may find that that’s their passion.”
