A washer that leaves clothes wet is not always suffering from a failed spin motor. First determine which symptom you have: the washer never spins, it stops before reaching spin, or it spins but leaves the load wetter than expected. The most common causes are a setting that limits spin, an unbalanced or overloaded load, excess suds, a drainage problem, a door or lid that is not registering as closed, or an installation and power issue.
Safety first: unplug the washer before reaching into any service area, clearing a suspected obstruction, inspecting wiring, removing a panel, or testing a component. Never bypass a lid switch or door-lock assembly. Hose heights, filter locations, error codes, calibration steps, and accessible parts vary by model, so your owner’s manual takes priority over general instructions.

Run through the easy checks before assuming an internal part has failed. A reset can clear a temporary interruption, but it will not repair a failed pump, belt, motor, bearing, door lock, lid switch, or control board.

1. The selected cycle uses low spin or no spin
Delicate, hand-wash, soak, bulky, wash-only, and some fabric-specific cycles may deliberately use a slower spin speed—or skip a normal spin altogether. That can leave more moisture in the clothing without indicating a fault.

Check the selected cycle and the spin-speed setting. If available on your model, choose Spin, Rinse & Spin, or Drain & Spin. Do not automatically choose the highest speed for every load; delicate fabrics and some bulky items require a lower setting. Use the cycle chart in the owner’s manual to confirm what the selected program is designed to do.
2. Too much or incompatible detergent created excess suds
Visible suds, soapy residue, unusually long drain periods, and repeated attempts to rebalance can point to an oversudsing problem. Too much detergent—or detergent that is not suitable for a high-efficiency machine—can interfere with draining and spinning.
Use the quantity and detergent type specified for your washer. HE machines generally require HE detergent, measured rather than poured freely into the dispenser. If the drum is unusually soapy, run the manufacturer-recommended rinse or rinse-and-spin procedure without adding more detergent. Do not treat detergent as the cause merely because clothes are wet; look for actual suds or residue and a pattern of slow or interrupted draining.

3. The load is unbalanced
A single heavy item, bedding, a rug, waterproof clothing, or tangled garments can collect on one side of the drum. The washer may then vibrate, repeatedly pause to redistribute the load, reduce its spin speed, or stop before full spin to protect the machine.
Pause the cycle, open the lid or door when the machine allows it, and spread the items evenly around the drum. If one bulky item is washing alone, adding a few suitable items can sometimes help distribute the weight—but do not pack the drum tightly or add items that are inappropriate for the cycle. For bedding, rugs, and waterproof materials, use the cycle and load guidance supplied by the manufacturer.
An imbalance means the weight is concentrated on one side. An overload means there is too much material overall. They are different problems, although they often occur together.

4. The drum is overloaded or tightly packed
Clothing needs room to move. An overloaded drum can prevent proper tumbling, slow the spin, strain the drive system, and leave the load wetter than expected. It may also trigger an overload-related motor error on some models.

Remove part of the load, distribute the remainder loosely, and retry the appropriate spin cycle. Do not judge capacity only by whether the door or lid closes. A tightly compressed load may fit physically but still be too large for the washer to wash and spin correctly. The manual’s capacity and fabric-specific instructions are more reliable than a visual estimate.
5. The washer is not level—or installation hardware remains in place
An unlevel cabinet can amplify vibration and cause the control system to reduce or interrupt spin. Check whether the washer rocks when you press gently on opposite corners. Adjust the feet using the manufacturer’s leveling procedure, then tighten any locking nuts specified by the manual.
Place the machine on a sturdy, reasonably rigid surface. A basic bubble level can help check the cabinet, but leveling alone does not prove that the washer is mechanically sound. Do not wedge improvised objects under the feet unless the manufacturer specifically permits that method.
If a front-load washer was recently installed and vibrates violently, confirm that all shipping bolts and packing materials were removed. These restraints are necessary for transport but can cause severe vibration if left installed. Follow the installation instructions for the exact model rather than guessing which hardware should be removed.
6. A power interruption stopped the cycle
A brief outage, tripped breaker, or tripped GFCI can interrupt a cycle before the washer reaches full spin. Check whether the display is blank or has reset, and inspect the breaker and GFCI only if they can be accessed safely. Confirm that the washer is plugged directly into the required wall outlet; do not use an extension cord, adapter, or surge protector where the manufacturer prohibits it.

After power is safely restored, select Drain & Spin if appropriate for the remaining water and load. If the outlet is hot, damaged, wet, sparking, or repeatedly trips the breaker or GFCI, stop using the appliance and contact an electrician or qualified service professional. Repeated electrical protection trips are not a normal reset procedure.
7. The drain path is blocked, kinked, or installed incorrectly
Many washers will not enter spin until they have drained. As a result, a drain problem often looks like a spin problem. Possible causes include a kinked or crushed external hose, a blocked household standpipe, incorrect hose placement, siphoning, excess suds, a clogged pump, or a dirty pump filter on models that provide one.
Use this safe troubleshooting sequence:
- Turn the washer off and unplug it.
- If water remains, follow the model’s emergency-drain procedure. Keep a shallow pan or suitable container and towels ready; residual water may be substantial.
- Inspect the external drain hose for kinks, crushing, cracks, and obvious blockage.
- Confirm that the hose is installed at the height specified for your model and is not sealed airtight into the standpipe. Incorrect placement can cause drainage or siphoning problems.
- If the washer is a front-loader with a user-accessible pump filter, follow the manual’s exact drain-and-filter-cleaning procedure. Some models do not have a user-serviceable filter.
- Secure the filter cap, covers, and hoses before reconnecting power. Then retry an empty Drain & Spin cycle.
Do not open a filter or hose connection casually while the drum is full. Water can spill quickly, and some machines may retain water even after the cycle appears to have stopped. A humming sound without water movement can indicate a restriction or a failing drain pump, but internal pump access should follow the model manual and electrical-safety precautions.

A top-loader may refuse to agitate or spin if the lid is open, obstructed, misaligned, or not being detected by its safety switch. A front-loader may stop or refuse to start if the door cannot latch or the electronic lock does not register correctly.

Inspect the seal, latch, and strike area for clothing or debris. Make sure the door or lid closes normally and is not being held open by an overloaded drum. Do not slam the lid, press on it, hold it down, or bypass the interlock to make the washer run. If the machine works only when you manipulate the lid or door, stop using it and arrange service.
Fast troubleshooting order
Work through these checks in order:
- Read the display and record any error code exactly.
- Confirm the cycle and spin setting.
- Pause the machine, redistribute the load, and remove some laundry if it is overloaded.
- Check that the lid or door closes and latches without force or obstruction.
- Inspect the external drain hose and household drain.
- Look for excess suds and confirm the detergent type and amount.
- Check power, the breaker, and GFCI status without using an extension cord.
- Level the machine and, if newly installed, verify removal of shipping hardware.
- Clean an accessible pump filter only according to the owner’s manual.
- If it still will not spin, stop troubleshooting and arrange qualified service.
When the problem is probably an internal part
If the washer drains correctly, has a suitable load and setting, the lid or door registers as closed, and the basket still never moves, the fault may involve a motor, belt, coupling, drive system, bearing, pump, lock, wiring, or control component. The correct diagnosis depends on the brand, platform, full model number, and any stored error code.
Do not order a generic belt, lid switch, door lock, drain pump, or motor coupling. Parts vary by model, revision, and sometimes geography. If testing or replacement is appropriate, use the model documentation and match the exact part number. A model-specific washer drain pump, washer lid switch, or washer drive belt replacement is a legitimate later-stage search—not a sensible first response to wet clothes.
Likewise, a reset or calibration mode may help after a correctable imbalance or interruption on some machines, but it cannot repair a failed mechanical or electrical component. If the manufacturer’s test cycle and basic checks do not restore spin, the appropriate next step is manufacturer-authorized washer service or a qualified appliance technician.
Stop and request service if you see these warning signs
- Burning smell, smoke, or electrical arcing
- A hot, damaged, wet, or sparking outlet
- Repeated breaker or GFCI trips
- A leaking cabinet or water reaching electrical components
- A locked drum full of water that cannot be safely drained
- Persistent motor, control, door-lock, or drain errors
- Unusual grinding, scraping, or severe mechanical noise
- A continuing no-spin condition after the basic checks
In these situations, unplug the machine if doing so is safe, keep clear of exposed water or live electrical parts, and follow the manufacturer’s support process or contact a qualified appliance service professional. The owner’s manual and manufacturer’s model-specific instructions take priority over generic repair advice.

Why is my washer leaving clothes wet but still spinning?

Can an unbalanced load stop a washer from spinning?

No. The interlock is a safety device that prevents operation under unsafe conditions. Never hold, defeat, or bypass it. If the washer runs only when the lid or door is manipulated, discontinue use and arrange service.
