If a room has no natural light, a plant light may help; otherwise, choose a plant for the light the space actually receives and adjust care to suit it.
What “no sunlight” means for houseplants
In gardening advice, “plants that don’t need sunlight” usually means plants that cope with less indoor light than many houseplants—not plants that thrive without light. University of Maryland Extension classifies low light as 25–100 foot-candles. That is a general category, not a precise promise about growth or a universal threshold for every species and cultivar. See University of Maryland Extension’s indoor lighting guide.
For a room with little natural light, consider a plant that tolerates low-light conditions, then watch how it responds. Long, leggy growth or unusually dark-green leaves can indicate inadequate light, according to UNH Extension. A plant may survive in a dim spot without growing well there.
8 houseplants to consider for low-light rooms
These plants are identified as low-light or suitable for spots without much sunlight by the cited botanical gardens and university extension services. The sources do not establish a complete ranking or show that every cultivar performs equally in every home.

How to choose one for your room
- Look at the available light. A dim room may suit a low-light-tolerant plant, but “low light” is not the same as darkness. If you cannot provide enough natural light, consider supplemental lighting.
- Match the plant’s shape to the space. Snake plants and ZZ plants grow upright; pothos trails; spider plants and cast-iron plants spread. Allow room for the plant’s mature form rather than choosing by a small store-pot appearance alone.
- Check care for the exact plant. The cited sources do not provide a consistent comparison of watering needs across all eight recommendations. Confirm care instructions for the species and cultivar you buy, and do not assume that every low-light plant wants the same watering schedule.
- Choose based on conditions, not a ranking. The sources establish options, not a definitive “best” plant or a guarantee that a particular plant will thrive in every dim room.
What to do if the room is too dark
If a plant shows signs of inadequate light or the space receives virtually no natural light, move it to a brighter location when possible or add a plant light. UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions puts it simply: “Indoor plants don’t always get as much light as they’d like, and plant lights can be an easy way to help them out.” See its houseplant care guidance. A grow light is an option for a light shortage, not a requirement for everyone who keeps a low-light-tolerant plant.
