8 Plants for a Lush, Natural Retaining Wall Garden

Choose retaining-wall plants by matching sun, soil depth, drainage and local hardiness. These eight candidates suit different conditions, not one universal planting plan.

The best plants for a retaining wall depend on the planting strip—not just the look you want. Check its sun, rooting depth, drainage and local hardiness before choosing. The eight plants below are candidates for different conditions, not a single combination that will thrive everywhere. Planting can cover exposed soil and soften a wall, but it cannot repair a wall that is unstable or failing.

Match plants to the wall’s conditions

A narrow strip at the top of a wall can have little soil and dry out quickly; a shaded, north-facing strip presents a different challenge from a sunny one. Start by checking these factors:

  • Sun: Note whether the strip gets full sun, part shade or shade, and for how many hours. Wall aspect matters: a University of Washington library answer for a north-facing wall names different possibilities from the sun- and west-facing example described by North Carolina Extension. North Carolina Extension’s wall-garden profile describes a USDA zone 8a site with a south- and west-facing brick wall, partial-day shade from mature trees, thin soil and fast-draining shale beneath it.
  • Rooting depth: Check how much soil is available above the wall and whether roots have room to establish. A shallow strip can limit plant choices.
  • Drainage and moisture: Determine whether water runs through quickly or the soil stays damp. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach notes, “Many slopes are well-drained, so selecting drought-tolerant plants is beneficial.” That does not mean every wall planting is dry: assess the strip itself before choosing.
  • Hardiness: Compare a plant’s listed hardiness range with your location and winter conditions. A plant that performs in one region may not be suitable in another.
  • Size and shape: Look up mature spread, not just the size of the plant at purchase. Choose a mix of forms and seasonal interest only where their light, soil and water needs are compatible.

Eight plants to consider

These candidates are drawn from extension profiles and a documented North Carolina wall garden. Verify regional suitability and mature size before planting.

1. Hardy ice plant (Delosperma cooperi)

Hardy ice plant appears in the North Carolina Extension retaining-wall garden. It is a candidate for a sunny, well-drained site where it is hardy locally; the example does not establish suitability for every climate or wall. North Carolina Extension’s plant profile provides further information.

2. Stonecrop (Petrosedum rupestre ‘Angelina’)

This stonecrop was also recorded in the North Carolina wall garden. Use that planting as a regional example rather than a universal recommendation, and check the plant’s requirements against your site before combining it with other candidates.

3. Creeping phlox (Phlox stolonifera)

Recorded in the same garden, creeping phlox is another option to investigate. Pay particular attention to whether the strip’s light and moisture conditions suit it; the wall-garden example alone does not establish that it will fit every exposed or dry planting strip.

4. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

English lavender was among the plants in the North Carolina example, including its fall display with Russian sage and ice plant. Do not infer from that planting that lavender suits all climates, soils or wall aspects. Check local hardiness and site conditions.

5. Russian sage (Salvia yangii)

Russian sage was also recorded in the North Carolina wall garden and its fall display. Consider it only if the local climate and planting conditions are appropriate, and allow for its mature size rather than treating it as a compact wall-edge spiller.

6. Creeping juniper (Juniperus horizontalis)

NC State Extension describes creeping juniper as a groundcover for slopes, retaining walls and rock gardens. Its profile notes that it can spread widely and is vulnerable to pests and diseases, so check the mature spread and be prepared to monitor its health. Read the NC State Extension profile.

7. Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens)

NC State Extension describes candytuft as evergreen, with a habit that can cascade over raised beds or sprawl over a rock wall. Wet soil can cause crown rot, making drainage an important suitability check. Read the NC State Extension profile.

For a shaded or north-facing wall

A University of Washington library answer for a north-facing wall names these plants as possibilities for its described site:

  • Brunnera macrophylla
  • Epimedium
  • Geranium phaeum
  • Stachys byzantina
  • Lamium maculatum
  • Liriope

The answer notes that geranium and lamium trail somewhat. Treat these names as leads to verify locally, not as a blanket planting plan: shade, soil depth, drainage and regional conditions still matter.

Plant to cover soil without creating runoff channels

Groundcover foliage and mulch help cover exposed soil. Iowa State Extension recommends staggering plants rather than lining them up in a way that could create channels for runoff, and considering water coming from above the slope. Redirect excess water where needed. These practices help with landscape runoff; they do not establish that planting can correct an unstable or failing retaining wall.

Plan for establishment watering

Drought tolerance does not remove the need to plan for establishment. Oregon State University Extension Service’s western Oregon groundcover trial irrigated plants during establishment in fall 2019 and 2021, then assessed them growing without irrigation. The 2019–2025 trial covered 78 plant types across 38 genera, but its results describe that regional trial, not a guarantee for other locations. See the OSU Extension trial information.

Water new plantings as needed while roots establish, taking the local climate, soil and plant requirements into account. Before planting, confirm how water drains from the strip and where runoff from above will go.
