Pothos can trail from a basket or shelf, climb along a support, or be arranged as a sculptural accent. University of Illinois Extension describes pothos as “vigorous climbers” that look good in a pot or hanging basket. Choose a display that suits the room while giving the plant appropriate light and a secure, practical home.
Choose a display that fits the plant and the space
Start with the effect you want: let the stems hang, guide them upward, or keep the plant compact in a pot. University of Illinois Extension recommends bright, indirect sunlight for pothos and also lists it among medium-light houseplants. Golden pothos tolerates low light, but its yellow variegation is more pronounced in higher light. Set the plant where its light needs can be met, whatever display you choose.
Eight ways to display pothos
1. Let it trail from a hanging basket
A hanging basket makes the plant’s trailing stems part of the room’s vertical space. Check that the planter drains, that water will not damage anything below, and that the hanging point is secure. Baskets can dry out quickly, particularly when moss- or coir-lined, because moisture escapes through the sides as well as through drainage.
2. Drape it from a high shelf or bookcase
Place a potted pothos near the edge of a high shelf and let its stems frame the furniture. This is a design option rather than a tested growing method; choose a spot with suitable light and consider whether watering could drip onto books or the surface below.

3. Guide it along a trellis or plant support
Pothos is a climber, so a support can turn its stems into a deliberate line or shape. Guide the vines along a stable trellis or other plant support, without treating any particular support product as required.
4. Create a living wall accent
Set a potted plant beside a wall-mounted support or another stable vertical structure and guide the vines along it. This adapts pothos’s climbing habit into a wall accent; it does not depend on a particular wall system. Make sure the arrangement is stable and the plant receives suitable light.

5. Make a kokedama display
Kokedama is a moss-wrapped plant display that can be hung, attached to bark or driftwood, or nestled in a container or tray. The University of Illinois Extension guide lists these materials:
- A small container plant
- Lightweight potting mix
- Bonsai soil or clay-based cat litter
- Sheet moss or Spanish moss
- Water and scissors
Choose how to present the finished kokedama based on the available surface or a secure hanging point.

6. Set a compact pot on a tabletop or console
A simple pot can make pothos a focal point on a table or console, alone or alongside other objects. Keep the plant in a suitable light and use a surface that can tolerate occasional water during maintenance.
7. Wind a vine around a stable decorative object
University of Illinois Extension notes that golden pothos vines can be wound around almost anything in the home. Use a stable object and arrange the vine as a visual accent; winding it is a display choice, not a care requirement.

8. Train a topiary-like form
A small frame can give a potted plant a sculptural outline. Illinois Extension discusses wire frames filled with moss for container topiary and notes that occasional trimming can maintain the intended shape. Applying that idea to pothos is an adaptable design suggestion, not a guarantee that a particular frame or form will suit every plant.

For standard pothos, also called Devil’s ivy, Illinois Extension recommends allowing the soil to dry moderately between waterings. Its guidance differs for silver pothos, for which it says to keep the soil barely moist. Avoid relying on a single watering schedule for every pothos type or display: a hanging basket, especially one lined with moss or coir, may dry faster than a pot on a surface.
