7 Vans Converted into Tiny Homes on Wheels

These seven van tours show different ways owners fit beds, kitchens, bathrooms, storage and outdoor living into compact vehicles—and the trade-offs each layout makes.

These seven van conversions show how a compact vehicle can become a tiny home by arranging a few hard choices—sleeping, cooking, storage, bathroom space and a usable aisle—around the way its owners live. They are individual case studies, not a ranking or a representative survey of van builds.

Seven van conversions, and what each layout makes possible

1. Lorjor Explore: an extended Ford Transit with a rear lounge-bed

Lorjor Explore’s full-time home is a 2020 extended high-roof Ford Transit. The owners describe choosing the vehicle around their planned layout and heights; they bought it in 2021 with 26,000 miles. A bathroom and kitchen occupy the front, while a rear U-shaped lounge converts into a bed slightly larger than a standard queen. This arrangement gives the living area a second use at night, but the bed depends on converting the lounge rather than remaining permanently set up.

The owner-listed systems include 620W of solar, a 400Ah lithium battery bank, a 3000W inverter/charger, a 30-gallon fresh-water tank, a 15-gallon gray-water tank and a wet bath. These are the owners’ specifications, not independently tested performance results. See the Lorjor Explore van tour.

2. Sara and Alex James: a custom Sprinter with an indoor shower

This custom Sprinter prioritizes full-time amenities: a kitchen with a farmhouse sink, an enclosed shower with hot water, and a urine-diverting toilet. A king-size bed converts to a table, so the same area serves sleeping and daytime use. The tour also lists a mini fridge, diesel heater and a built-in dog-crate area.

The electrical equipment listed is 300W of solar, 300Ah of lithium batteries and a 3000W inverter/charger. Those figures describe this particular build; they are not a standardized comparison of off-grid runtime. View the Sara and Alex James van tour.

3. Two with a View: a Peugeot Boxer with a slide-out bed

This DIY Peugeot Boxer puts the bedroom at the rear. At night, the bed slides out and cushions from the seating area fill the gap at its foot, enlarging the sleeping surface. That design lets the owners use the space for sitting during the day without dedicating the full area to a fixed bed.

The creators say they built two campervans over several years and applied lessons from those projects to refine this one. Their page was first published November 3, 2024, and updated March 16, 2026. Read the Peugeot Boxer van tour.

4. Jennelle Eliana: a colorful 1995 GMC Vandura Explorer

Jennelle Eliana bought this used conversion van in 2017 and converted it herself, according to Apartment Therapy. She had initially wanted a Sprinter, but found the GMC Vandura Explorer instead. The compact, colorful interior includes solar power, a working sink, clothing storage and a heated enclosure for her pet snake.

This build illustrates a different starting point from an empty cargo van: adapting an older conversion vehicle to its owner’s needs. The source does not provide comparable electrical or water-system capacities. See Apartment Therapy’s tour of Eliana’s van.

5. When You Wander: keeping the useful parts of an Econoline

The owners of “Stan,” a Ford Econoline conversion van, retained the folding rear bench, which turns into a bed, and used the space beneath it for storage. They removed the rear captain’s chairs and the TV/VCR rather than stripping out the entire conversion. The result is a selective adaptation: preserve furniture that still works, and reclaim space from what does not.

The tour is useful for anyone weighing a rebuild against modifying an existing conversion van. It does not specify comparable power, water or bathroom details. Tour Stan, the Econoline conversion van.

6. Bearfoot Theory: a 144-inch 4×4 Sprinter designed around an open aisle

Kristen Bor’s retrospective account describes a short 144-inch-wheelbase 4×4 Mercedes Sprinter arranged to preserve an open walkway while still fitting a work table, storage, shower, toilet and galley. A convertible sofa-bed and removable table made the same compact footprint work for different activities. The central lesson is spatial: keeping a clear route through the van can matter as much as adding another built-in.

The article is dated April 16, 2024, and says the van had been sold in March 2017. It also notes that later Sprinters were built by Outside Van, so this is a design case study, not a vehicle currently offered for sale. Read Bearfoot Theory’s Sprinter conversion tour.

7. The Fites: an extended Transit with outdoor decks

The Fites describe a 2016 extended-wheelbase Ford Transit conversion completed in just over three months. Their page lists 80 square feet of indoor space, a rooftop deck and a 20-square-foot rear pull-out deck. The decks extend usable living space outdoors, while the interior remains constrained by the vehicle’s footprint.

The build account also covers insulation and the subfloor, making it relevant beyond the finished tour for readers considering construction choices. The creators’ advice: “Give yourself enough time so it remains fun every step of the way.” The page attributes the quotation to the conversion creators but does not name an individual speaker. What these layouts can teach you before a conversion

Choose the vehicle around the people and routines

Start by listing who will live in the van and what must happen inside on an ordinary day: sleeping, cooking, working, changing clothes, washing and moving through the vehicle. The extended Transit owners connect vehicle size to their intended layout and heights, while Bearfoot Theory’s shorter Sprinter shows the value of protecting an aisle. A longer body can create more planning room, but the useful question is whether it supports the activities you will actually do.

Decide whether the bed stays made

A fixed bed is ready whenever you need it but occupies floor area all day. A convertible lounge or bed-table uses space twice; a slide-out bed expands at night; a folding factory bench can avoid a complete rebuild. Compare not just the advertised sleeping size, but also how much daily setup is required and where cushions or bedding go when the bed is stowed.

Set the bathroom boundary early

An indoor shower and toilet can support more self-contained travel, as in the Lorjor Explore and Sara and Alex James builds, but they claim valuable interior area. Bearfoot Theory’s account offers a contrasting layout: its 144-inch Mini Bungalow design removed the wet bath because the clients did not need an indoor shower. The right choice depends on how you travel and which other functions deserve that footprint.

Treat electrical specifications as design inputs, not promises of runtime

The two builds with listed solar and battery figures use different systems: Lorjor Explore reports 620W and 400Ah, while Sara and Alex James list 300W and 300Ah. Neither account supplies a standardized load test that would establish how long another household can go without hookups. Runtime also depends on the appliances and habits the system must support, so size a system to its intended loads rather than copying a number from a tour.

Look for useful existing structure before removing it

Stan’s retained bench-bed and under-bench storage show why an existing conversion van may not need to be stripped to become more useful. Removing only the captain’s chairs and entertainment equipment freed space while preserving working furniture. Inspect what can be reused before deciding on a full demolition.

Allow enough time for the build

The Fites report completing their conversion in just over three months, but that is one project’s timeline, not a general schedule. Their advice is to “Give yourself enough time so it remains fun every step of the way.”
