The best eco-friendly laundry detergent depends on which trade-off matters most to you. Tide purclean is the strongest all-around choice for cleaning performance and recognized certifications; Cleancult is the better fit for a refill system; Charlie’s Soap is the standout powder; AspenClean and Blueland reduce packaging in different single-dose formats; and EC30 is the most convincing sheet-like option in the testing reviewed here.
“Eco-friendly” does not mean impact-free or chemical-free. A more useful comparison looks at specific evidence: plant-derived content, concentrated or water-free formats, refillable or recycled packaging, ingredient disclosure, independent certifications, and measured stain removal. Good Housekeeping’s comparative testing provides the main performance evidence for these eight picks, while manufacturer and certification information explains their ingredients, packaging, and credentials. Claims and packaging can vary by scent, size, and market, so check the current label before buying.

1. Tide purclean Liquid Laundry Detergent: best overall
Tide purclean is the safest starting point for shoppers who want familiar liquid-detergent performance with more specific environmental credentials. Good Housekeeping reported strong results on standard stains in hot, warm, and cold water. The formula is described as 75% plant-based, USDA Certified Biobased, and EPA Safer Choice certified. Tide also says the product is made using wind-powered electricity and at a zero-waste-to-landfill manufacturing site.
#1 Best Overall
- 4 More Loads Per Bottle: 174 fl oz ARM & HAMMER Liquid Laundry Detergent, Clean Burst Scent, with up to 174 loads for excellent value and trusted cleaning power
- 2X Stain Fighters: Concentrated with 2X stain fighters in every load (vs leading value detergent); tackles grass, food, and oily stains in every load; infused with ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda to power out tough dirt and odors
- Fresh Clean Burst Scent: With a vibrantly fresh fragrance that leaves clothes smelling fresh without being overpowering
- High-Efficiency (HE) Detergent: Designed to work in all washers, including standard and high-efficiency (HE) machines; works at all temperatures, even cold water; suitable for all fabric types
- Trusted Clean: ARM & HAMMER is the #1 liquid laundry detergent brand (based on total wash loads sold, L52W ending 1/08/26)
It is made without dyes, chlorine, or optical brighteners, and an unscented version is available. That makes the unscented variant more relevant than the scented version for households avoiding fragrance. The limitation is packaging: the detergent still comes in a conventional plastic bottle. “75% plant-based” describes the stated biobased portion; it does not mean that 75% of the bottle and entire product system is environmentally impact-free.
Choose it if: cleaning performance is your first priority and you want third-party certification without switching to powder, tablets, or sheets.
2. Cleancult Concentrated Laundry Detergent: best value and refill system
Cleancult makes the most sense when you intend to keep and reuse the dispensing bottle rather than repeatedly buy conventional detergent bottles. Good Housekeeping named it a best-value choice and reported very good to excellent performance, especially on coffee, wine, chocolate syrup, and ink. The formula was reported as 99.6% naturally derived, and refills come in recyclable paper cartons. Fragrance-free and scented options are available.
The refill system has an upfront cost because the reusable glass bottle is purchased separately. The carton should be described precisely as recyclable; do not assume that every version is universally compostable or entirely plastic-free without checking the current package. The environmental benefit also depends on actually using refills and on the disposal and transport systems available where you live.
Choose it if: reducing repeated bottle purchases matters more to you than having a completely water-free format.
3. Charlie’s Soap Laundry Powder: best powder
Charlie’s Soap is the strongest choice here for a concentrated, fragrance-free powder. It is EPA Safer Choice certified and is intended for both standard and high-efficiency (HE) machines. Charlie’s Soap says a large load uses approximately one tablespoon. Its listed ingredients include sodium carbonate, surfactants, sodium metasilicate, and water.
The powder format generally avoids shipping as much water as a dilute liquid and can be stored in a compact container. However, the formula does not contain enzymes. That matters because enzymes can help target particular biological or food-based stains; a separate pretreatment may be useful for oily or set-in marks. Good Housekeeping’s related testing found the liquid version performed well overall but was weaker on oily stains, so readers should not treat that result as a direct test of every powder variant.

- 3X odor power: Concentrated with 3X odor fighters in every load (vs. leading value detergent) for fresh, clean laundry
- Fights tough odors: Powered by Odor Blasters, this liquid detergent tackles tough odors like pet odors, damp clothes, sweat, musty towels, and body odor
- Triple power action: Powered by OxiClean, this dermatologist-tested detergent fights tough odors, boosts lasting freshness, and blasts away stains
- Trusted ARM & HAMMER Plus OxiClean: Harness the power of OxiClean plus the cleaning power you know and trust from ARM & HAMMER
Choose it if: you want fragrance-free powder, concentrated dosing, and paper- or cardboard-style storage. Follow the package directions for water hardness and machine type.
4. Gain Botanicals Plant Based Laundry Detergent: best-smelling option
Gain Botanicals is the compromise pick for people who want a noticeable fragrance along with a plant-derived formula. Good Housekeeping reported that the tested liquid was 65% USDA Biobased and performed better than many traditional formulas. It removed tea completely from every tested swatch and did consistently well on most other stains.
It was less successful on tomato sauce and crayon. Available scents include orange blossom vanilla and white tea lavender, but there is no fragrance-free version in the researched material. That makes it a poor fit for anyone avoiding fragrance because of preference or skin sensitivity.
Choose it if: scent is a major part of your detergent decision and you accept that the formula is not the strongest performer on every stain.
5. AspenClean Laundry Pods: best packs
AspenClean is the best single-dose pack in this group, especially for shoppers who want a powdered product in a low-plastic package. These are powdered laundry packs, not liquid-filled pods. Good Housekeeping found strong results on spaghetti sauce, chocolate syrup, wine, and mustard. The testing description includes enzymes such as protease and amylase, oxygen bleach, and a recyclable cardboard canister.
AspenClean currently describes its laundry pods as plant-based, biodegradable, septic-safe, and zero-plastic, with a compostable container. It also identifies EcoCert, EWG Verified, and Leaping Bunny credentials. Because certifications and packaging can differ by scent, size, and market, verify the exact product variant rather than transferring every claim to every AspenClean pack.
Choose it if: you want convenient premeasured doses and a powdered single-dose format. Store all packets securely and follow the package’s handling instructions.

6. Seventh Generation EasyDose Ultra Concentrate: best concentrate
Seventh Generation EasyDose stands out for making concentrated-liquid dosing easier to control. Its squeeze dispenser is designed to measure one dose for a medium load; the researched directions call for two doses for larger or heavily soiled loads. Good Housekeeping reported good cold-water cleaning performance, a formula that is 98% USDA Biobased, and a bottle made from 100% recycled plastic that is recyclable.

Neither means the package contains no plastic. Local recycling rules and the condition of the empty bottle also affect what happens after use.
Choose it if: you want liquid detergent but are trying to reduce overdosing and buy a more concentrated product. Look for the fragrance-free variant if avoiding scent is important.
7. Blueland Laundry Detergent Tablet Starter Set: best tablets
Blueland is the clearest choice for shoppers seeking water-free laundry tablets, a reusable storage tin, and a plastic-free tablet format. Good Housekeeping found good cleaning performance, complete dissolution in cold-water testing, and no tablet remnants after the test cycles. Updated directions recommend two tablets for large or heavily soiled loads. The starter set uses a reusable “forever” tin and a refill pouch.
Blueland’s current product information describes the tablet as plastic-free and microplastic-free, with plant- and mineral-based cleaning ingredients. It says the formula contains no PVA, phosphates, dyes, phthalates, parabens, or optical brighteners, and identifies EPA Safer Choice, Cradle to Cradle, and Leaping Bunny credentials. The fragrance-free Free & Clear variant is the one identified as accepted by the National Eczema Association; do not extend that statement to scented variants.

8. EC30 Laundry Detergent Swatches: best sheet-like format
EC30 is the most persuasive choice if you want a sheet- or swatch-like detergent but do not want to assume that every detergent sheet cleans equally well. In Good Housekeeping’s testing of 20 detergent-sheet brands, EC30 was the top overall scorer and the only product reported to make a noticeable improvement on set-in spaghetti sauce. It whitened fabric comparably to a traditional detergent.
There are meaningful compromises. EC30 dissolved more slowly than ordinary sheets and had a higher reported cost per load. A swatch is also not the same thing as a conventional liquid-filled pod. Good Housekeeping reported a fragrance-free option and full ingredient and safety information on the packaging. EC30 claims up to a 50% lower carbon-emission impact than traditional liquid detergent; that figure should be attributed to the company, not presented as an independently verified life-cycle result.

How to choose an eco-friendlier detergent format
Liquid
Liquid detergents are familiar, easy to pretreat with, and represented by some of the strongest cleaning performers here. Their disadvantage is that conventional liquid products ship substantial water and commonly use plastic bottles. Concentrates, accurate dispensers, and refill systems can reduce some of that burden, but they do not eliminate it.
Powder
Powder is concentrated and typically ships with less water than ordinary liquid. Charlie’s Soap is the relevant fragrance-free example in this list. Powder can be less convenient if it clumps in humid storage or if you prefer a premeasured dose. Use the amount directed for your machine and water conditions rather than assuming more detergent cleans better.
Pods and packs
Single-dose formats simplify measuring and can reduce spills and packaging volume. AspenClean’s product is a powdered pack, while liquid laundry packets in general raise a separate safety concern. Consumer Reports reported 117,808 U.S. Poison Center calls related to liquid laundry packet exposure between 2013 and February 2024. Keep all packets locked, sealed, and out of children’s reach; never cut, puncture, or handle them with wet hands unless the label specifically instructs otherwise.
Tablets
Blueland’s tablet uses a reusable tin and is described by the company as plastic-free and PVA-free. Tablets are convenient and lightweight, but dose carefully: the researched directions call for two for large or heavily soiled loads.

- CONCENTRATED FORMULA: Tide concentrated liquid laundry soap has less water per drop versus leading bargain liquid detergents which means you get more cleaning power in every dose of Tide washing detergent
- LONG-LASTING FRESHNESS: Enjoy the original washing detergent scent you love. Made to last all day, Tide liquid laundry detergent provides freshness that you can count on
- EASY TO USE: Pour desired amount of liquid detergent into the laundry dispenser or drum. Tide laundry detergent works on all machine washable fabrics and in all cycles and water temperatures, including cold and quick cycles
Sheets or swatches
Sheet-like formats can reduce the water and bulky packaging shipped to the home. EC30’s testing result is useful because it shows that at least one swatch format can perform competitively. Still, dissolution speed and cost per load vary, and a company’s carbon comparison is not the same as an independent full life-cycle assessment.

Certifications are more useful than a vague front-label phrase, but they are not interchangeable:
- EPA Safer Choice: The EPA evaluates ingredients against human-health and environmental criteria and also considers factors including packaging, volatile organic compounds, and resource conservation. It is not a guarantee that a product has no environmental trade-offs. Read the EPA’s explanation of Safer Choice.
- USDA Certified Biobased Product: This addresses the percentage of biobased content. It does not measure every aspect of manufacturing, packaging, transport, cleaning performance, or end-of-life impact.
- EcoCert: A certification associated with defined product and ingredient standards; it should not be treated as equivalent to EPA Safer Choice.
- Leaping Bunny: Addresses animal-testing policies, not overall environmental impact or stain-removal performance.
- EWG Verified: Addresses ingredient and product transparency under EWG’s criteria; it is not a universal environmental score.
- Cradle to Cradle: Covers defined aspects of material health, circularity, renewable energy, water stewardship, and social fairness, depending on the certification level and product.
Also avoid “non-toxic” and “chemical-free.” Laundry detergent is made of chemicals, including plant-derived and mineral ingredients. The more accurate description is the specific verified attribute—for example, “EPA Safer Choice certified,” “75% USDA Biobased,” “recyclable cardboard canister,” or “plastic-free tablet.”

How to make any detergent choice more sustainable
- Use the correct dose. Overdosing wastes product and can leave residue. Follow the current package directions for load size, soil level, machine type, and water conditions.
- Wash in cold water when the fabric and hygiene requirements allow. The detergent tests cited here included cold-water testing for several products, but cleaning results still depend on the stain, fabric, cycle, and machine.
- Choose a format you will consistently use. A refill carton, powder, tablet, or sheet only delivers its packaging advantage if it works for your household and prevents waste from abandoned or incorrectly used products.
- Separate stain treatment from detergent marketing. Enzyme-containing formulas may be useful for some food or biological stains; oxygen bleach or a stain pretreatment may be appropriate for other problems. Follow garment-care labels and never mix cleaning products casually.
- Dispose of packaging according to local rules. “Recyclable” means the material is designed to be recyclable, not that every municipality accepts it.
- Store detergent safely. Keep powders, liquids, tablets, and packets in their original containers, closed and inaccessible to children and pets.
Prices, package counts, inventory, and certification status were not established for every current variant in the research reviewed for this article. Check the current listing and package before purchase, especially if you need a particular scent, fragrance-free formula, certification, or refill size.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which eco-friendly laundry detergent cleans the best?
Among the products reviewed, Good Housekeeping described Tide purclean as a strong all-around performer across hot, warm, and cold water. EC30 was the leading sheet-like product in its testing, but it costs more per load and dissolves more slowly than ordinary sheets.
Are laundry detergent pods safe?
They can be used safely when handled exactly as directed, but laundry packets require strict child-safety precautions. Keep them sealed and out of children’s reach, and do not cut or puncture them. Consumer Reports reported 117,808 U.S. Poison Center calls related to liquid laundry packet exposure between 2013 and February 2024.
Is powder or liquid detergent more environmentally friendly?
Neither format wins in every situation. Powder and concentrated products generally ship less water, while liquid refills can reduce repeated bottle use. The overall result depends on formulation, packaging, transport, dose, washing habits, and disposal.
