7 Things You Should Never Plug Into a Power Strip, According to Electrical-Safety Guidance

Power strips add outlets, not electrical capacity. Here are seven high-load appliances that should use the proper wall connection, plus the warning signs that mean it is time to stop using a strip and call an electrician.

The short answer: never use a power strip for a portable space heater, air conditioner, refrigerator or freezer, range or oven, washer or dryer, or other high-wattage heating appliance. Microwaves also belong on the appropriate wall receptacle rather than a general-purpose power strip.

A power strip gives you more places to connect plugs; it does not give your circuit more capacity. The danger is cumulative current, heat at a loose or damaged connection, unsuitable cords and plugs, or using the wrong type of equipment—not simply the number of occupied sockets. A surge protector does not make a high-load appliance safe to connect to a strip.

Why a power strip is the wrong solution for high-load appliances

Every power strip has an electrical rating. That rating applies to the total load of everything connected to it, not to each outlet individually. A strip with eight sockets can still be overloaded by one appliance—or by several modest appliances operating at the same time.

Power strips and surge protectors are also different products. An ordinary power strip provides additional outlets. A surge protector adds components intended to limit certain voltage surges. Neither product increases the safe capacity of the branch circuit, and neither removes the need to follow the appliance manufacturer’s instructions.

UL Solutions advises consumers to check a strip’s electrical rating and certification. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends using power strips with internal overload protection and warns consumers not to overload them. Those precautions are for suitable, lower-draw equipment; they are not permission to connect a heater, dryer, or other major appliance to a strip.

1. Portable electric space heaters

Plug a portable space heater directly into a wall outlet—never into a power strip or extension cord.

This is the clearest rule on the list. Portable heaters are continuous, high-wattage, heat-producing loads. A loose plug, damaged cord, undersized extension cord, or overloaded strip can become hot at the plug, receptacle, or internal contacts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission also advises keeping a portable heater at least three feet from beds, curtains, clothing, paper, sofas, and other combustible materials. Set it on a stable, level surface, and do not leave it running while you are asleep or away. If the plug or cord becomes hot, stop using the heater and have the electrical problem assessed.

2. Window and portable air conditioners

Do not connect a window or portable air conditioner to a general-purpose power strip.

The U.S. Fire Administration’s appliance-safety guidance directs consumers to plug air conditioners directly into a wall outlet to help prevent fires. Air conditioners contain compressors and can draw substantial current, including during startup. The correct connection depends on the unit’s nameplate, plug configuration, circuit, and installation instructions, so there is no universal wattage or amp threshold that makes a power strip acceptable.

The default safe choice is the properly rated wall receptacle specified by the air-conditioner manual. Use another connection only if the manufacturer expressly identifies it as approved and the equipment is correctly rated for that application.

3. Refrigerators and freezers

Keep refrigerators and freezers on a direct wall connection.

USFA specifically includes refrigerators among the major appliances that should be connected directly to a wall outlet and warns against using an extension cord with a refrigerator. Motors can run for long periods and draw a higher startup current when the compressor begins. A power strip adds another plug, cord, and set of contacts that can loosen, become damaged, or overheat.

Do not treat a strip as a harmless way to reach a distant outlet. If the existing receptacle is inconvenient or inadequate, the safer solution is to have the circuit or outlet evaluated—not to daisy-chain cords across the room.

4. Electric ranges, ovens, and large cooking appliances

Never use a power strip to improvise power for an electric range or oven.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Full-size ranges and ovens may require dedicated circuits, special receptacles, and installation arrangements that a household power strip cannot provide. Follow the appliance installation instructions and applicable local electrical requirements.

The same caution applies to high-load countertop cooking equipment. Toasters, toaster ovens, electric kettles, electric skillets, griddles, and crockpots convert electricity into heat and can draw far more current than a lamp, charger, clock, television, or router.

Electrical Safety Foundation International guidance recommends using only one heat-producing appliance at a time in a receptacle outlet and never using extension cords or multi-outlet converters for appliances. In practical terms, plug a countertop heating appliance directly into the wall and do not share that receptacle with another heating appliance while it is operating.

5. Clothes washers and dryers

Washers and dryers belong on their intended wall connections—not on a power strip, extension cord, or daisy-chained adapter.

USFA lists washers and dryers among the major appliances that should be plugged directly into a wall outlet and advises against using extension cords with major appliances. Washers use motors and pumps; electric dryers are especially substantial, heat-producing loads and commonly require dedicated electrical arrangements.

A dryer’s correct connection is determined by its installation instructions, nameplate, receptacle, circuit, and local requirements. A power strip designed for small electronics is not a substitute for that installation.

6. Microwave ovens

A microwave is not a good general-purpose power-strip load.

Microwave ovens can draw substantial current during operation, and their heating function makes them poor candidates for sharing a strip with other appliances. The cited safety authorities do not establish one universal, microwave-specific statutory ban for every model, so the precise rule is to follow the manufacturer’s manual and use the appropriate wall receptacle whenever the manual calls for direct connection or the appliance’s load makes the strip unsuitable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not run a microwave from a strip shared with a toaster, kettle, coffee maker, or another heating appliance. If the kitchen lacks an appropriate receptacle, have the electrical installation assessed rather than improvising with adapters.

7. High-wattage countertop heating appliances

Keep toasters, toaster ovens, kettles, coffee makers, crockpots, electric skillets, griddles, and similar heating appliances off power strips.

UL Solutions identifies products such as toasters, hair dryers, crockpots, and electric skillets as higher-current loads. Running heating products together can overload a strip or trip a breaker. ESFI’s practical guidance is to use only one heat-producing appliance at a time in a receptacle outlet.

This does not mean that every small countertop appliance is prohibited by one nationwide rule in every circumstance. It means a general-purpose power strip is the wrong place to consolidate heat-producing loads. Use the appliance as directed, connect it directly to a suitable receptacle, and avoid sharing the receptacle with another high-load heating product.

What can usually go on a properly selected power strip?

Power strips are generally more appropriate for lower-draw electronics, such as:

  • Phone and tablet chargers
  • Lamps and alarm clocks
  • Televisions and streaming devices
  • Routers and network equipment
  • Many computers and monitors
  • Small peripheral devices

Even these examples are not automatically safe in every combination. Add the equipment’s ratings, stay within the strip’s marked capacity, keep ventilation clear, and follow the strip and equipment instructions. A computer workstation with several monitors may be a reasonable use; a heater, kettle, and coffee maker sharing that same strip is not.

If you need additional outlets for low-draw electronics, choose a UL-listed power strip with overload protection. Certification and overload protection are useful safety features, but they do not authorize connecting a heater, air conditioner, refrigerator, dryer, range, microwave, or other high-load appliance.

Power-strip safety checklist

  • Use internal overload protection. Choose a product with a recognized independent testing mark, such as UL, ETL, or CSA, and check its electrical rating.
  • Never daisy-chain. Do not plug one power strip or relocatable power tap into another, and do not connect strips to extension cords to reach farther.
  • Inspect before use. Replace a strip, cord, plug, or receptacle that is cracked, frayed, loose, scorched, melted, or hot during normal use.
  • React to heat. A hot cord or plug can indicate an overload, poor connection, damaged equipment, or a wiring problem. Stop using it rather than waiting to see whether it cools.
  • Protect cords. Keep cords out from under rugs and carpets and away from doorways, pinch points, and furniture that can crush them.
  • Preserve grounding. Never force a three-prong plug into a two-slot receptacle, remove the grounding prong, or use a loose wall outlet.
  • Check recalls. Certification is not a permanent guarantee that a product has never been recalled. Check current recall notices before continuing to use an older or questionable strip.

If a strip is damaged, do not keep using it while waiting for a replacement. Remove it from service. A current recall illustrates why checking matters: on March 26, 2026, the CPSC announced a recall of CCCEI power strips sold on Amazon from April 2024 through January 2026 because they lacked supplementary overcurrent protection and posed a fire risk if overloaded. Do not plug a recalled strip into another relocatable power tap or extension cord.

  • Breakers trip repeatedly.
  • An outlet, plug, or switch feels warm or hot.
  • You smell burning plastic or see discoloration, arcing, melting, or scorch marks.
  • A receptacle is loose or will not hold a plug securely.
  • The home lacks enough outlets for normal appliance use.
  • You find damaged wiring, an improvised adapter, or a missing ground.

Do not open a receptacle or attempt a repair simply because a plug-in tester reports a normal result. A basic tester cannot diagnose every electrical hazard. Persistent heat, burning odor, arcing, repeated breaker trips, or damaged wiring calls for stopping use and getting qualified professional help.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a surge protector make it safe to plug in a space heater?

No. A surge protector does not increase circuit capacity or eliminate the heat and current risks of a high-wattage appliance. CPSC guidance is to plug a portable heater directly into a wall outlet, never into a power strip or extension cord.

Can I plug several low-power devices into one power strip?

Often, yes, if the strip is certified, has overload protection, is undamaged, and the combined load stays within its marked rating. Low-draw electronics such as chargers, lamps, routers, televisions, and many computers are more appropriate than heat-producing or motor-driven appliances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a power-strip plug or outlet gets hot?

Stop using the equipment and disconnect it if you can do so safely. Do not simply replace the strip and continue using a hot or loose receptacle. Repeated heat, burning odor, discoloration, arcing, or breaker trips should be assessed by a qualified electrician.

Is a microwave always prohibited from a power strip?

The safest general guidance is to connect it to the appropriate wall receptacle and follow the manufacturer’s manual. The authorities cited here do not establish one universal microwave-specific prohibition for every model, but a microwave is a high-load heating appliance and should not share a general-purpose strip with other appliances.

The Bottom Line

A power strip is an outlet-expander for suitable low-draw electronics, not a replacement for household wiring. Keep heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, ranges, ovens, washers, dryers, microwaves, and high-wattage heating appliances on the properly rated wall connections specified by their instructions. If an outlet is hot, loose, damaged, or repeatedly trips a breaker, stop using it and call a qualified electrician.
