To make AC repair more affordable, rule out simple operating issues first, keep up with basic maintenance, and compare contractor estimates that cover the same work. Homeowners can check thermostat settings, filters, and visible airflow obstructions; diagnosis, electrical repairs, and refrigerant work belong with a qualified HVAC contractor. There is no universal repair price or guaranteed savings figure that applies to every home.
1. Check the thermostat before calling for a repair
Confirm that the thermostat is set to cooling and that its target temperature is below the current room temperature. Review its schedule, too: settings can be adjusted for times when the home is unoccupied or residents are asleep. The FTC recommends those adjustments, and a programmable thermostat can automate them. A thermostat may help manage energy use, but it does not repair a malfunctioning air conditioner.
The FTC’s heating and cooling guidance and ENERGY STAR’s cooling advice cover thermostat use. ENERGY STAR says households with high heating and cooling bills, or homes unoccupied for much of the day, may save approximately $100 per year with an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat. That is a conditional estimate, not a promise of savings for every household.
2. Inspect the filter and use the correct replacement
Check central AC, furnace, and heat pump filters monthly. If a filter is dirty, clean it if it is reusable or replace it if it is disposable. ENERGY STAR’s general guidance is to change filters at least every three months, with more frequent inspection during periods of heavy use. A clogged filter can raise energy costs and harm equipment.

Match the replacement filter’s type and size to the system’s requirements; there is no one size or efficiency rating that suits every unit. Check the existing filter and equipment guidance before buying. See ENERGY STAR’s maintenance checklist and heating and cooling efficiency guidance.
3. Keep visible airflow paths and outdoor equipment clear
Look for blocked supply or return vents and loose debris around the outdoor unit. Clear leaves, snow, and other loose obstructions from around equipment, and keep indoor and outdoor units free of visible dust and debris. Limit this to observation and clearing accessible obstructions—do not open equipment or attempt to clean hazardous internal components.
ENERGY STAR says airflow problems can reduce system efficiency by up to 15 percent; the page does not state a publication year. This is an efficiency claim, not a guaranteed reduction in an individual household’s energy bill. Its maintenance checklist and clean heating and cooling guidance discuss airflow and keeping equipment clear.

4. Book preventive service before the cooling season
Arrange an annual checkup before peak cooling demand, when contractor schedules are less likely to be crowded. ENERGY STAR identifies spring as a good time to schedule cooling-system service. A contractor’s typical inspection may cover thermostat and control operation, electrical connections, moving parts, drains, coils, refrigerant level, and blower components.
Those are service-provider inspection items, not instructions for homeowners to work on electrical or sealed components. Use ENERGY STAR’s maintenance checklist to understand the scope of routine service.
5. If refrigerant may be leaking, ask for diagnosis and repair
A system that repeatedly needs refrigerant may have a leak. Rather than agreeing to repeated charging without investigating the cause, ask the contractor what was measured, whether a leak was found, what repair is proposed, and whether the estimate includes follow-up verification.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says leaks increase operating and maintenance costs and advises homeowners to use technicians certified to handle refrigerants under Section 608. The EPA’s guidance is direct: “If your air conditioner leaks, ask your service technicians to locate and repair the leak instead of ‘topping it off.’” Do not buy or handle refrigerant yourself. See the EPA’s pages on purchasing and repairing home air conditioners or heat pumps and homeowner questions about refrigerants.

When more than one contractor is available, compare written estimates only after confirming they address the same diagnosis and scope. Ask each contractor to spell out:
- The suspected fault and how it was diagnosed
- The proposed work, including parts and labor
- Any warranty and what it covers
- Whether a follow-up visit or verification is included
- The contractor’s relevant credentials and expected schedule
A lower figure may reflect a narrower scope, different parts, or no follow-up—not necessarily a better value. The FTC advises consumers to check contractors and resist high-pressure sales. It does not establish a typical local AC repair price, so no fixed savings from comparing quotes can be promised. The FTC also points homeowners toward state or local energy offices and utility incentives for efficiency measures. Read its heating and cooling consumer guidance.

7. Weigh repair against replacement using the whole cost
If a contractor recommends replacing the system, ask why the current equipment cannot be repaired or why replacement is the better option. Compare the proposed system’s upfront price with its expected operating cost, energy use, efficiency, warranty, and the condition of the existing equipment. Check whether local rebates or incentives apply before deciding.
There is no universal age-based rule or repair-cost threshold that determines when every air conditioner should be replaced. The answer depends on the system’s condition, the specific repair, expected operating costs, and local incentive availability. The FTC points consumers to EnergyGuide labels, ENERGY STAR, and DSIRE when evaluating energy use and incentives; see its consumer guidance. Incentives and eligibility can vary by location and time.
