But published evidence does not establish a definitive list of seven uniquely sensitive plants: one study directly tested five—broccoli, leek, radish, viola and sunflower—and found poorer growth with spent grounds under its test conditions. The practical rule is to avoid applying fresh grounds directly around plants, and compost them instead.
Which plants have direct evidence of poorer growth?
A 2016 study by Hardgrove and Livesley tested spent coffee grounds with five horticultural species. The plants grew in sandy, sandy clay loam and loam soils, with different ground and fertilizer treatments. Growth declined for all five species when grounds were incorporated into the soil.

The researchers reported inhibition at application rates as low as 2.5% by volume in field work. That result is not a universal safe-or-unsafe threshold: it does not predict what will happen with every plant, soil, amount or gardening method. The study examined direct soil amendment, not a household trial of a light surface sprinkle or compost containing grounds. Read the study abstract.
These are five tested examples, not a complete list of plants that may be affected. The evidence does not support adding two more species and presenting them as equally established cases.

Do blueberries, rhododendrons and azaleas dislike coffee grounds?
These acid-loving plants are often mentioned in advice about coffee grounds, but the relevant warning is about pH—not evidence that these three are uniquely harmed. Used grounds are not a dependable way to acidify soil. Penn State Extension says they will not acidify soil around blueberries, rhododendrons and azaleas, and may raise its pH above the plants’ optimal range. Penn State Extension explains the pH myth.
Washington State University Extension likewise notes that the pH of decomposing grounds varies and is not reliably acidic. Do not assume grounds will make garden soil or compost more acidic. See WSU Extension’s guidance on coffee grounds.

Why can fresh coffee grounds affect growth?
The study’s authors said the growth suppression they observed was not explained by pH change or nitrogen availability; they considered phytotoxic effects a more likely explanation. WSU Extension also describes fresh grounds as phytotoxic to a range of plants and cautions against using them as a direct amendment or mulch. It warns against using grounds where plants are being grown from seed, because reduced germination and growth have been observed in crop and ornamental species.
That is why “coffee grounds are too acidic” is an incomplete explanation. Ground pH varies, and the study did not attribute its growth results to acidity. The practical concern is direct use of fresh spent grounds, not a simple rule that every plant reacts the same way.

What should you do with used coffee grounds?
Compost them before using them in the garden
WSU Extension recommends composting grounds so they can break down before being added to garden soil. Its guidance is to use no more than 20% coffee grounds by volume in a compost pile. This is an extension recommendation, not a universal experimental threshold. Compost containing grounds should not be treated as an acidifier.
Test soil before trying to change its pH
If a plant needs a particular soil pH, base amendments on a soil test rather than assuming coffee grounds will move pH in the desired direction. The University of Missouri Extension recommends testing soil before applying amendments. Read its advice on grounds and soil testing.
