The best plants for a private outdoor retreat depend on your region, site, and whether you need screening through winter or only during the growing season. These seven shrubs are regionally grounded examples—not a universal ranking. Before buying, confirm local hardiness, mature size, and native or invasive status with your cooperative extension service or a reputable regional nursery.

Choose plants for the kind of privacy you need

Start by deciding what the screen must do. Evergreen plants retain foliage year-round; deciduous shrubs provide their fullest visual cover during the growing season, though bare branches can still soften views and slow wind. A hedge boundary, a year-round visual barrier, and a layered planting that screens a patio without blocking every view call for different choices.

Before selecting species, check your local climate, mature plant height and width, sun exposure, soil drainage and moisture, irrigation access, and nearby utilities. Space plants for their mature dimensions rather than crowding them for an instant wall. University of Maryland Extension recommends checking soil, contacting the utility locator before digging, planting at the correct depth with roots properly placed, and keeping mulch no more than 2–3 inches deep and away from trunks. Expect to give new plants attention during their first one to two years. University of Maryland Extension’s planting guidance has further details.

Seven plants to consider for different sites

These examples come from Maine and North Carolina extension guidance, so their regional recommendations should not be treated as proof that every plant will thrive everywhere. Match each choice to your local conditions and the privacy season you want.

Common ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolius) is a deciduous shrub that Maine Extension describes as 3–10 feet tall. Make the screen resilient and manageable

A mixed, layered screen can combine different plant types and heights instead of relying on a straight row of one species. Maryland Extension notes that a single-species planting can be lost to a shared pest, disease, or unsuitable growing condition. Iowa State Extension and Outreach likewise describes mixed hedges as more resilient, while cautioning that they can be more complex to maintain and less uniform in appearance.

Ligustrum Waxleaf Privet - 15 Live Plants - Evergreen Privacy Hedge
  • This upright deciduous, occasionally semi-evergreen, shrub blooms creamy-white, fragrant flowers followed by round blue-black fruit. Its dark green and bright green glossy foliage has larger leaves compared to the Sinense. This fast grower will reach 8-10 feet high. Its dense and bushy characteristics make it ideal for a privacy screen, wind screen, hedging, and small tree, while adding great color to your garden.
  • This low-maintenance evergreen needs a regular water schedule to ensure the growth of a mature root system. After the mature root system is established, watering is needed occasionally, except during a drought, watering is needed regularly. Responds well to pruning. Shearing is recommended 2-3 per year to maintain desired shape. Mulching is recommended to detour weeds, retain moisture, and keep temperatures low.
  • Compact habit with glossy foliage responds well to pruning into topiary or small standard trees. Displays a profusion of white blooms. Useful hedge, screen or windbreak. Performs well in containers and as a topiary specimen. Evergreen.
  • Because of their versatility and undemanding nature, they are used extensively in home landscapes. Plant them as hedges, foundation plants, patio trees or in shrub borders.
  • These shrubs are grown primarily for the dense foliage they can provide when pruned into hedges. That dense foliage, along with their height, means that they afford good privacy during the summertime when folks are most active in their backyards.

Match the planting style to the care you will provide. Formal sheared hedges often need pruning two or more times per year; informal hedges typically require minimal pruning, according to Iowa State Extension and Outreach. Plants whose natural mature form suits your desired height can reduce the need for repeated shaping.

Favor locally appropriate native plants where they fit the site, and check whether any candidate is considered invasive in your area. Maryland Extension specifically warns against bamboo and Japanese barberry in Maryland; that warning should not be treated as a universal classification for every jurisdiction. Local extension and native-plant resources can help you assess regional suitability.

What to check before you buy

  • Botanical identity and cultivar: Confirm the scientific name and cultivar, since mature size and form can vary.
  • Site fit: Compare the plant’s light, soil moisture, drainage, and climate needs with your actual planting location.
  • Privacy season: Verify whether the plant is evergreen or deciduous and whether that matches your need for winter coverage.
  • Space and utilities: Check mature width and height, leave appropriate spacing, and locate underground utilities before digging.
  • Local ecological guidance: Ask a regional extension office or native-plant resource about native status, invasiveness, and likely browsing pressure.

Popular screening plants are not risk-free. NC State Extension flags disease or pest concerns for Leyland cypress and boxwood, and storm damage, internal browning, and root rot concerns for arborvitae. These are regional cautions, not a claim that every plant will fail. Its overview of regional options and considerations is available at NC State Extension’s privacy planting guide.

For more region-specific shrub choices, Maine homeowners can consult University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s privacy-screen recommendations. For hedge layout and pruning considerations, see Iowa State Extension and Outreach’s hedge guide.
