The best firewood shed plan is the one that fits the amount of wood you actually store, the space available, and your site’s weather. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) publishes four storage configurations—one-third-cord designs with two end constructions, a half-cord design, and a full-cord design—along with a separate one-cord shed flyer. Those options make a useful starting point, but they are not seven wholly different shed designs. This guide treats the EPA’s capacity and end-construction variants as distinct plan choices, then includes two footprint-specific plans from Shedplans.org. Review the drawings, material lists, and site requirements before building.
Seven firewood shed plan options
Capacity labels and end construction are the clearest way to compare the EPA choices. The agency’s storage page provides material and tool sheets for the first four options; its one-cord flyer supplies the fifth. The final two are footprint-specific plans from Shedplans.org. A listed capacity is a plan description, not a guarantee of how much wood a particular stack will hold after accounting for stacking style and usable space.
| Plan | Capacity or footprint | What distinguishes it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Expandable storage with T-post ends | One-third cord | EPA-listed expandable configuration with T-post ends; consult its material and tool sheet for construction details. | EPA storage plans |
| 2. Expandable storage with 2-by-4 ends | One-third cord | Same stated capacity as the T-post option, with a different end construction. Compare the agency’s sheets to decide which suits your materials and build. | EPA storage plans |
| 3. Half-cord storage | One-half cord | A larger EPA capacity option; check its sheet for dimensions, materials, and assembly. | EPA storage plans |
| 4. Full-cord storage | One cord | EPA-listed full-cord storage configuration. The storage page provides a plan sheet. | EPA storage plans |
| 5. EPA one-cord shed | About one cord | A separate shed flyer with a bill of materials, tool list, and build guidance. EPA describes it as easy to fabricate and light enough to move by hand, and says two people take about five hours to build it; these are claims in the plan, not guaranteed results. | EPA shed plan |
| 6. 3-by-6-foot firewood shed plan | 3 by 6 feet | A footprint-specific alternative for a smaller available area. Review the full drawing and cut list before relying on it for a particular capacity. | Shedplans.org plan PDF |
| 7. 4-by-8-foot firewood shed plan | 4 by 8 feet | A larger footprint-specific alternative. Check the drawing, cut list, and site suitability; the linked plan does not establish a comparable cord capacity in the information available here. | Shedplans.org plan PDF |
The EPA’s Burn Wise pages are now a historical record: the program ran from 2009 to 2025, and the agency says content was no longer updated after October 30, 2025. The published plans remain accessible, but should be read as archived guidance rather than a currently maintained program resource. See the EPA Burn Wise archive notice.
How to choose a plan
Start with the amount of wood you use
If your storage need is modest, compare the one-third-cord options first. The half-cord and full-cord configurations suit larger planned stacks. Choose based on your expected supply and the space a safely stacked pile will occupy—not just the nominal capacity label.

Match the footprint to the site
Measure the available area, including room to load and remove logs. The 3-by-6-foot and 4-by-8-foot plans describe footprints, not proven capacities. For any plan, inspect the drawing and cut list before buying materials so you can confirm dimensions and access will work at your location.
Compare construction detail and materials
The EPA storage page links material and tool sheets for its capacity options. The separate one-cord flyer includes a specific materials and tools list. Look for dimensions, quantities, assembly sequence, and enough detail to identify how the frame, floor, sides, and roof fit together. Do not assume that a list for one EPA plan applies to another configuration.

Think about airflow, loading, and weather
Open or spaced sides allow air to move through the stack and make loading easier. A roof should protect the wood from rain and snow, and a slope helps prevent water from collecting. Check how the chosen drawing handles roof overhang and access before construction.
Allow for local conditions
The published plans do not establish permit status, code compliance, foundation requirements, or structural adequacy for your specific site. Check local requirements and adapt the design for local snow, wind, soil, and other conditions. Do not treat a general plan as a site-specific engineering approval.

The EPA flyer says the shed holds about one cord. Its accompanying materials include treated pine and these quantities for that particular design:
- Two 2-by-6-by-8-foot boards for the floor frame.
- Thirteen 1-by-4-by-8-foot boards for floor, side, and back slats.
- Eight 2-by-4-by-8-foot boards for the frame, joists, and rafters.
- Three 4-by-4-by-12-foot posts.

Use the EPA flyer itself for the complete plan and quantities. These dimensions and materials belong to that one design and should not be transferred to the other options.

The EPA’s Build Firewood Storage guidance recommends splitting wood before stacking it: “Split the firewood before stacking and storing to decrease drying time.” It also recommends keeping wood off the ground on a base, using a roof large enough to protect it from rain and snow, and sloping the roof so water does not collect.

- MEASUREMENTS - Firewood rack: 4ft x 4ft x 13.8 inch, firewood cover: 4ft x 3.5ft x 24 inch; Ideal for storing, drying, or heaping firewood; Fits on porches, in gardens, on decks, under eaves, on patios, in your yard, etc
As a roof-overhang improvement, the EPA describes extending the roof one foot on all sides. Its example replaces a 4-by-8-foot plywood roof with a 6-by-10-foot metal roof, adds framing to support the larger roof, and eliminates the plywood. This is an option from that guidance, not a requirement for every plan; confirm that the framing can support the roof you choose.
The same EPA guidance recommends seasoning softwood for at least six months and hardwood for at least 12 months. Those are agency recommendations, not a promise that wood will be dry by a specific date; drying depends on conditions.
