Bird netting is the most effective way to keep birds off blueberries. Put it up as berries begin to color, support it above the bushes, and secure the edges so birds cannot slip underneath. Reflective objects and sound devices may help as supplements, but birds can get used to them; sprays have limited evidence and may leave residue.
1. Use netting as your main defense
Unlike scare tactics, netting protects berries by physically keeping birds away from the fruit. University of Maryland Extension and Iowa State Extension both identify it as the most effective protection for blueberry crops (University of Maryland Extension; Iowa State Extension).

Install it when the berries begin to color, before birds have established a feeding pattern. Lift or move it carefully when picking, then close it again.
2. Support the net and close the edges
A net draped directly over bushes can make picking awkward and may leave openings. Hoops or a simple frame hold the net above the plants and make it easier to access the crop. Anchor or otherwise secure the lower edges so birds cannot enter from underneath.

For larger plantings, a post-and-wire setup is one option; the dimensions in the University of Massachusetts Extension example are a design for a larger planting, not a requirement for a few backyard bushes (UMass Extension). Scale the supports to your planting and make sure the net can be opened for harvest.
3. Choose mesh with bird safety in mind
Mesh size and construction affect both exclusion and the risk of birds becoming tangled. University of Maine Extension horticulturist Katherine Garland recommends mesh of 1/2 inch or smaller to reduce that risk (University of Maine Extension). University of Maryland Extension describes netting sold in sizes from 1 inch to 1/4 inch or finer and notes that finer mesh, or shade cloth of 20% or less, tangles less than netting.

Check the net regularly for holes, loose sections, and trapped wildlife. The right choice depends on the net’s construction and your planting; no single mesh specification in these recommendations guarantees suitability for every garden.

Mylar tape, balloons, CDs, and other moving or reflective objects can sometimes discourage birds. Their effect is not as dependable as physical exclusion, and birds may become accustomed to visual deterrents over time (University of Maryland Extension; British Columbia bird-management guide). Treat them as an extra measure rather than a substitute for a well-secured net.

5. Use sound deterrents selectively
Noisemakers and recorded distress calls are among the methods University of Maryland Extension describes as somewhat effective. Results can vary, birds may get used to repeated sounds, and noise can bother neighbors (University of Maryland Extension; British Columbia bird-management guide). For a home garden, consider the effect on nearby households and avoid treating loud, repeated noise as a universally suitable solution.

University of Maryland Extension reports limited success with methyl anthranilate, a grape-derived extract, and notes that it may leave a bitter, grape-like residue. An older UMass Extension fact sheet also discusses grape-flavored Kool-Aid or methyl anthranilate and sucrose spray; it says the sucrose solution needs to be reapplied after rain (University of Maryland Extension; UMass Extension). These approaches are not equivalent to netting: do not assume they will protect the crop, and check current product labels and local suitability before applying any spray.
