Six plants with documented topiary uses are boxwood, yew, holly, privet, box honeysuckle and arborvitae. None is a universal best choice: climate, site, mature size, desired shape and willingness to prune all matter. Check local horticultural advice before choosing a species or cultivar for your landscape.
What makes a plant suitable for topiary?
Topiary is the art of training plants—typically evergreen shrubs and trees—into stylized forms. Dense foliage can help create a defined outline, but a plant also needs to suit its site and respond appropriately to shaping. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) names box and yew as typical choices, along with privet, holly and Lonicera nitida; University of Georgia Extension also includes arborvitae and juniper among plants commonly shaped as topiary.

The six choices below are documented options, not a ranked list. Before planting, compare local climate and soil conditions, the plant’s mature size and form, the foliage texture you want, and the pruning it will require.
Six plants to consider for topiary
1. Boxwood (Buxus)
Boxwood is a familiar dense evergreen used for hedging and topiary. Its foliage can make it a candidate for crisp shapes, but disease concerns can affect whether it suits a particular landscape. North Carolina State Extension notes that boxwood can be susceptible to leaf spot and boxwood blight. Consider local disease guidance and site conditions when comparing it with alternatives.

2. Yew (Taxus)
Yew is a classic topiary plant, according to the RHS. The genus includes different species, and their suitability depends on the plant and local conditions. Consult regional planting guidance for species selection and site requirements rather than assuming every yew is interchangeable.
3. Holly (Ilex)
Holly is another RHS-listed option. University of Georgia Extension specifically identifies Japanese holly and yaupon holly as plants used for topiary. Those examples are more useful starting points than the broad label “holly”: check the species or cultivar’s mature size and regional suitability before selecting it.

4. Privet (Ligustrum)
Privet appears in both RHS and University of Georgia Extension topiary guidance. The RHS notes that several privets tolerate most soils and some shade, but that does not apply identically to every species or cultivar. Fast growth may also mean more clipping to keep a formal shape, so confirm the growth habit of the particular plant you plan to use.

5. Box honeysuckle (Lonicera nitida)

6. Arborvitae (Thuja)
University of Georgia Extension lists arborvitae among plants commonly shaped as topiary. That genus-level reference does not establish the mature size, shape or site fit of a particular selection. Choose a species or cultivar with characteristics appropriate to the space and form you have in mind, using local guidance.
How to choose for your landscape
- Match the plant to the site. Check local climate, soil, light and other growing conditions against species- or cultivar-specific guidance.
- Allow for mature size. A plant that can be clipped into a small form may still grow too large for its location or intended design.
- Choose the form and foliage deliberately. Consider whether you want a formal outline or a more natural shape, and whether the plant’s foliage and growth habit support it.
- Account for disease and upkeep. Boxwood’s documented disease concerns may influence selection; fast-growing privets may require more clipping. Ask a local extension service or knowledgeable nursery about other region-specific considerations.
Plan for ongoing pruning
Topiary is maintained through repeated shaping, not a one-time cut. University of Georgia Extension says frequent pruning is needed to maintain the form. The RHS emphasizes plant establishment and notes that pruning response and timing vary by plant, so a single calendar date or schedule cannot be applied to all six choices.
