Burn a candle more safely and evenly
The National Candle Association advises following the manufacturer’s directions and generally recommends not burning a candle for longer than four hours at a time. Its candle-label guidance says to keep a burning candle in sight, away from combustible materials, and out of reach of children and pets. The maker’s instructions for a particular candle should take precedence if they are more restrictive.
- Trim the wick to ¼ inch before each use. The National Candle Association says, “That’s why it is so important to trim the wick to ¼ inch before every use.” A wick trimmer is one practical way to do this.
- Keep debris out of the wax pool and place the candle away from drafts or strong air currents, following the Association’s care tips.
- For a first burn, the Association’s 2018 guide advises allowing the wax to melt from edge to edge while still respecting the maker’s maximum burn time. Follow the specific product’s directions.
The Association also notes that quality waxes can burn cleanly when properly formulated and used, and that different waxes have different performance characteristics. Wax type alone is not proof that a candle is safer, cleaner-burning or better quality.
