To grow morning glories in pots, give them full sun, freely draining soil, warm conditions for sowing, and a sturdy support to climb. Keep the seed and young seedlings moist as they establish, then water in response to heat and container conditions rather than following a fixed calendar. These tips apply to the annual morning glories covered by the extension sources; check the species and cultivar on your seed packet.
1. Choose a sunny spot and a pot that drains
Place the container where the vine will receive full sun. Use a pot with drainage holes and soil that does not stay waterlogged. Oregon State University Extension recommends full sun and well-drained soil for annual morning glory, while North Carolina State Extension notes that Ipomoea tricolor does not tolerate standing water. The cited guidance does not establish a minimum pot size. Choose a container that can accommodate the plant and its support, and avoid letting excess water collect beneath it.

2. Sow after the soil warms
For annual morning glory, Oregon State University Extension recommends sowing when the soil is at least 60°F, at a depth of about ¼ inch. Keep the soil moist while seeds germinate and seedlings establish. Use soil warmth and local frost conditions to guide timing instead of relying on a single calendar date; the 60°F threshold is the extension recommendation, not a universal planting date. 3. Help hard seeds absorb water
Morning glory seeds have a hard coat. North Carolina State Extension recommends nicking the seed coat and soaking seeds overnight before planting; Illinois Extension reports that a 24-hour soak can speed germination. Nick carefully so you scratch the coat without cutting into the seed, then soak and sow it. North Carolina State Extension; Illinois Extension.
4. Install climbing support before the vine needs it
Set a trellis, fence, or other stable climbing structure in place at planting time. A support helps direct the vine upward instead of letting it sprawl or tangle with nearby plants. Make sure the support is secure and suits both the container’s footprint and the growing space.

Potential vine length varies by species and cultivar: Oregon State Extension says annual morning glories may reach up to 15 feet depending on cultivar, while North Carolina State Extension describes Ipomoea purpurea as 6 to 10 feet. These are potential heights, not guarantees for a container-grown plant. Size the support for the plant identified on the seed packet and the space available. Oregon State University Extension; North Carolina State Extension.
5. Water according to growth stage and weather
Keep the soil moist while seeds germinate and seedlings establish. After that, annual morning glory tolerates dry soil, but Oregon State University Extension says it appreciates irrigation during heat waves. Check the soil and the plant rather than applying a fixed schedule: containers dry at different rates depending on their size, exposure, and weather. Avoid leaving the roots in standing water. Illinois Extension recommends keeping soil fertility to a minimum, and North Carolina State Extension says the plant can perform in poor soil with little or no fertilizer. The cited sources do not provide a container-specific fertilizer schedule, so do not assume regular feeding is necessary. Illinois Extension; North Carolina State Extension.
Do not eat morning glory seeds. North Carolina State Extension identifies seed ingestion as a hazard for Ipomoea tricolor and lists toxicity concerns for dogs, cats, and horses. Store seeds and keep seed pods where children and pets cannot reach them. If ingestion occurs, contact an appropriate medical or veterinary professional. North Carolina State Extension.
