They can add variety to a rose border, but the recommendations do not establish that planting them prevents pests or disease. Choose plants suited to your local conditions and leave at least one foot between each companion and the rose base.
Six perennial companions to consider
These plants appear on extension-service companion lists. Their mature size, hardiness, and care needs vary by species and cultivar, so check the plant label and local guidance before choosing a spot.

Catmint (Nepeta)
Catmint is a low-growing option suggested for rose gardens by University of California Cooperative Extension and University of Vermont Extension. Check its mature spread and keep it from crowding the rose. Read the UCCE companion-plant guidance.
Hardy geranium (Geranium)
Hardy geranium is listed by UCCE and Iowa State University Extension. Look for a perennial hardy geranium, not an annual bedding plant that may also be sold under a similar common name.
#1 Best Overall
- French Petite Marigold - Signature Heirloom Collection (USA): Non-GMO | Untreated seeds | High germination rate. Architectural micro-scale in the "Quiet Luxury" style within garden and tabletop compositions unfolds as an element of high landscape fashion. French chic of a botanical masterpiece with an impeccable sense of proportion.
- The Phenomenon of the Ideal Bud: Fully double velvet spheres of French Petite Marigold are a celebration of filigree garden plasticity. Miniature yet incredibly complex sculptural volume: hundreds of corrugated petals are arranged in dense, resilient dome-shaped inflorescences. Rich multi-tiered texture, pronounced rhythmic reliefs, jewel-like symmetry, tactile silky texture—the ultimate image of flora.
- Color Mosaic of Inflorescences: The variety's palette features deep color shifts with a soft glowing effect. Sunny amber, intense terracotta, dark burgundy (rich mahogany), and lemon highlights intertwine within each inflorescence. The color retains its juicy ultra-saturation until the end of the cycle.
- Monolithic Canopy: Deeply dissected, pinnately compound leaves form a sturdy openwork framework—a dense cushion-like crown of an emerald-malachite shade. The elegant carved profile of green lace and soft matte texture create a spectacular, dramatic backdrop for bright and lush double inflorescences.
- Arrangement Potential: Borders and parterre arabesques: graphic velvet ribbons. Container gardening: cascading flowering scattering in planters, pots, and window boxes. Massive carpet plantings: a kaleidoscopic canvas. Fusion mixes: an expressive contrasting base for tall garden crops.
Yarrow (Achillea)
Yarrow appears on both UCCE’s and Iowa State’s lists. Select a cultivar whose mature height and spread fit the rose and the surrounding border.
Perennial salvia (Salvia)
Iowa State lists perennial salvia, while UCCE names meadow sage. Because “salvia” covers many plants, verify the species and cultivar rather than relying on the common name alone.

How to choose and place companions
Match the growing conditions
“In selecting companion plants, choose those that have the same growing requirements as your roses,” writes Beverly Servadio, UCCE Master Gardener, in UCCE’s guide to companion plants for roses. Iowa State recommends matching plants to rose-site conditions such as full sun and moist, well-drained soil. UCCE also advises considering whether the plants share compatible watering, fertilizer, and pesticide schedules.
The UCCE list is identified as suitable for Sunset climate zones 8 and 9, so it should not be treated as a universal planting prescription. Check regional hardiness information and the needs of the particular cultivar. For roses generally, University of Maryland Extension recommends at least six hours of direct sun daily and well-drained soil; individual companion plants may have different requirements.

Leave room around the rose
Keep companions at least one foot from rose bushes. UCCE explains that the gap helps avoid disturbing rose roots and allows access to each plant; University of Vermont Extension also recommends a foot to avoid restricting air circulation or competing for nutrients. Avoid crowding: University of Maryland Extension notes that crowding can increase competition for water, nutrients, and sunlight, and recommends spacing plants to allow air movement. See Maryland Extension’s rose care guidance.

What companion planting can—and cannot—promise
Extension lists identify these perennials as possible rose companions; they do not demonstrate that the pairings reliably control aphids, black spot, or other rose problems. Treat them as garden-design options, not pest or disease protection. Companion planting does not replace appropriate rose care.
